Chapter 106: Ch 105: Making enemies on both sides
"Leon, is something wrong? You have a worried look on your face."
Seraphina pointed out as she walked in front of Leon and behind Iris. She looked excited to be out on an adventure and to be helping Lyra. But Leon could not help but feel like something was wrong.
It almost felt like Kael had tried to get them out of the mansion before he was about to do something weird.
’Now, what is he planning? Knowing him, it cannot be anything good.’
Leon did not trust Kael when it came to his own well-being. Especially since Kael considered himself to be an expert, but often put himself in danger anyway.
"Leon-"
"I am fine. I just want to finish this trip as soon as possible and then head back. Somehow, I have a bad feeling about leaving Kael behind."
Seraphina made a sound of understanding as she followed after Leon. They both joined Iris and Lyra at the next city entrance. But instead of being allowed inside, the guard was giving Iris a hard time.
"-told you that we have a permit. Please allow us inside now."
Iris told the guard in a controlled voice. She was trying her hardest not to accidentally kill the man in front of her.
But the guard was doing everything in his power to give Iris a reason to smack him.
"I told you already, miss- permit or not, we cannot allow you to bring a demonic beast inside our borders. Do you even know what the condition of the world is right now? If you want to cross the city, then I suggest you take the side path."
The guard pointed to the forest path and refused to allow them entry into the city.
Iris was about to argue when Leon stepped in.
"Is something going on with the demons?"
He asked, and the guard snorted in disbelief, wondering why someone was even asking him this question.
"Have you been living under a rock or something? Everyone knows about the demon-human war that started a while back. It is getting worse day by day...but I guess a kid like you won’t know much about it."
Leon felt his heart sink at that confirmation, and things started to become clear in his mind.
Suddenly, it became clear to him why Kael had sent them out now and why he had felt anxious.
He had been preparing to participate in this war all along.
’Fucking hell! How long had he been planning this for? It could not have been long. Shit! How did I miss this?’
Leon had a lot of questions, but he did not have answers.
He wanted to march back and grab Kael to demand the answers that he needed. But he did not get to walk far before someone grabbed his back and pulled him toward the forest path.
"What do you think you are doing? We need to bring Kael back before he does something stupid-"
"We cannot. Kael...has made his decision, so we should respect it. If he...Since he asked us to do something for him, we should focus on that for now."
Seraphina’s voice sounded heavy, almost as if she was trying to hold back her tears.
Hearing her speak like this made Leon feel bad about his impulsiveness. But that did not mean he wanted to continue either.
"Let’s not fight over this. Leon, if you are so concerned about Kael, then you can head back. No one here will fault you for making this decision."
Iris promised, and Leon looked grateful. He was about to take that offer when his eyes landed on Lyra.
She was being held in Seraphina’s grip, but her body looked tense. She also had sharp eyes that seemed to be looking through Leon’s soul.
Leon...had a feeling he needed to see the task Kael had given him through.
"I am sure Kael has his reasons as to why he sent the three of us here. Let’s respect his wishes for now."
Seraphina told Leon, and he nodded.
He could see that he was not the only one who was upset by Kael’s deception. Both Seraphina and Iris were barely holding themselves back from running after him as well.
Seraphina already looked ready to kidnap Kael and lock him in a room to stop him from making dangerous decisions.
"Let’s get going for now. We have a long road to cover."
Iris took charge of the situation and they started walking once more. Their destination was still quite a while away.
__________
Kael deployed another magical field when he felt a sudden shiver go down his spine. The chilling feeling he got at that second made him certain that his trick had been discovered by now.
"Ah, those kids must have noticed what I am up to by now. But since I don’t sense them anywhere near, my trick should have worked."
The reason Kael had sent the trio with Lyra was because he knew they could keep each other in check. They all had poor impulse control when it came to themselves but incredible patience when it came to others. (Except Leon)
Moreover, it would also be better if these kids got close enough to form a friendship that went beyond obsession.
[Seraphina’s trust: -10%]
[Iris’s trust: -10%]
[Lyra’s trust: +10%]
[The hero’s will is shaking. Please do not cause unneeded distress to the hero candidate. Otherwise, the fate of the world might change.]
There were too many messages, and Kael tried his best not to feel guilty.
"Well, it is a given that I lost trust with Seraphina and Iris because of my actions. But Lyra’s trust is a welcome thing...as for Leon..."
Kael had no words to say to the hero. He knew he had wronged Leon, but it was for a good purpose. He was sure Leon would understand his intentions.
But it was all something he could consider later. For now, he needed to focus on the corruption.
Things were starting to come under control after a full day of cleaning up the corruption. Both sides knew better than to engage in areas where Kael was going to strike.
Kael had made an enemy on both sides...or so it seemed. He would have to be extra careful from now on. Otherwise, who knew what could happen?
