Chapter 104: Ch 103: Volunteering for War

There was silence once Council Head Kristain Han finished his sentence. Everyone looked at Kael once more to see what he would say.

But this time, Kael’s decision was different.

He had initially gotten himself out of trouble through the technicality of being neutral. But if corruption and Leon were involved, then it was a different matter.

Kael opened his mouth to give an answer, but Council Head Kristain Han decided to interfere before he could speak.

"As I recall, there is a new saintess chosen by the holy power as well, right? With her and the hero both present, we should have a way to fight corruption. And this war is the best time for them to gain experience against it."

People started to agree with Council Head Kristain Han.

To them, it did not matter that both Leon and Seraphina were kids. Since they had been chosen, they had a responsibility to carry.

"Council Head, this is not right! Our Saintess is far too young and inexperienced. She is not suited to head to war. And the hero is also not ready to face corruption."

Cardinal Flux decided to be useful and fought back against Council Head Kristain Han.

However, the elder man just dismissed the concern.

"It will be fine. They both might be kids, but they have the protection of the mighty with them. They have a better chance of coming out of this war alive than anyone else."

Things were getting out of hand.

Kael had a feeling that the Council Head was finally showing his true colors. He wanted to send the kids to the war for some reason.

’Darn it! I really wanted to avoid this war. But it looks like I do not have another option.’

Kael took a deep breath and regret started to curl around him even before he had opened his mouth.

And yet, despite that, he knew that he was making the right decision.

"Both Leon and Seraphina are far too young to fight corruption. Instead, I will take their place as their teacher and investigate things around the battlefield."

Kael did have a thought about running away or even killing all the troublesome people so that he would not have to deal with their mess anymore.

But that would be counterproductive to his goal.

Corruption would launch a full-force attack on humanity in the future and at that time, Leon would need everyone’s help to combat it. So these fools needed to be kept alive.

"Oh! That’s so noble of you, Grand Master Kael. I am delighted to see that our hero has such a virtuous person as his teacher."

Kael decided to look away, not wanting to hear any more of the chatter.

"So, when is the war starting?"

The secretary asked and Cardinal Flux took it as his cue to start speaking.

"We are already at war, so the quicker the forces can be deployed, the better it will be. Grand Master Kael, when will you be joining us to fight the demons?"

Kael raised his eyebrow at the question.

"Why would I be joining you? As far as I am concerned, the only thing I need to take down is corruption. I won’t discriminate between my targets, so your forces had better keep themselves safe out there."

That was the final warning Kael gave Cardinal Flux before he headed out. He left his familiar behind so that he could keep an ear out for what they were saying.

The meeting was far from over, but his ability to tolerate the nonsense had reached its limit.

Sigh

"Well, since I have no choice but to head out to war anyway, I had better take the opportunity to find that missing child. I am sure she suffered a lot during this time and it caused her to develop a complex..."

The one Kael was talking about was none other than Elena Noctis, the necromancer.

Out of everyone, she was the one who was most like Kael—withdrawn and detached. But from what he recalled, Elena was awfully kind.

And it was because of this kindness that she was taken advantage of during this war. It had led her to become dependent on Leon’s constant, unwavering kindness as the hero, and she had been a nuisance when she chased after him.

Most of her problems originated from her time during the war and everything she had been made to go through.

But Kael had an advantage this time.

Last time, the war had gone on for years before it stopped. But it had not been a long interval this time. So hopefully, he could get to Elena before she was too traumatized.

The only problem—

"How am I going to explain what is happening to the kids? I doubt they would take me getting drafted into war well."

In fact, Kael was afraid that the kids might even do something drastic that could lead to them getting in trouble...or much worse, getting involved in the war.

"Hmm, what can I distract these kids with? Ugh, this is not going to be easy for me. I will have to call in so many connections and bribe them to keep their mouths quiet."

Unfortunately, this was the price of wanting to save this world and get rid of his regrets.

With some luck, this all won’t take much time...

Hopefully.

"So, did things work out as you wanted?"

Chairwoman Lumi asked her partner. She was curious about what had been decided and whether their plan was finally starting to take shape.

"Of course everything worked out. People are too afraid of the corruption right now for Grand Master Kael to ignore it. Moreover, Cardinal Flux did an excellent job faking Sir Ken’s expedition. He is proving to be useful once more."

Council Head Kristain Han took a seat beside Lumi and relaxed. Lumi rubbed his shoulder in a playful manner and her eyes shone with curiosity.

"So, what do you have planned next?"

She asked and Council Head Kristain Han gave her a calm look.

"Why don’t you tell me? Didn’t you find a new toy recently? Are you finally thinking of making use of her?"

"Hmm, maybe I will. Elena Noctis is a good child, but she’s recently been giving me some problems. Alas, it is time for me to put her out of her misery. But only after she does one last thing for me."
