Chapter 103: Ch 102: Perfect Timing

"As my dear Cardinal has already said, the demons are becoming more and more of a problem by the day. Usually, I would like to sit back and allow them to kill each other. However, this time it’s different."

Council Head Kristain Han was a man Kael did not know much about or care about...up until now.

The most important decision Council Head Kristain Han made in Kael’s past life was signing the document that started the war between demons and humans. Kael had no desire to know anything beyond that either.

However, now that he had come face-to-face with this man, he could tell that something was different about him.

"So, are you saying that the nobles are ready to head to war?"

The secretary asked in a shocked voice and the council head nodded.

"War is not ideal and our first preference is to avoid it if possible. But this time, the demons tried to go after one of our own. We merely wish to avenge our comrade."

These sweet words hid a poisoned dagger and Kael felt even more uncomfortable.

’Is he...trying to push for war? Why would a noble want war when they had nothing to gain? They cannot even raise taxes or try to earn money because the imperial army and the Temple will take it all.’

There was no way Kael was willing to believe that Council Head Kristain Han was doing this out of the goodness of his heart.

"I see. We already know that the Temple is advocating for the war. What does the Magic Tower think about this situation?"

The secretary addressed Kael next and Kael was ready with the answer.

"We wish to remain neutral for now. We understand the circumstances behind this recent push, but we neither have a motive nor a personal reason to join the war."

Kael came across as cold and ruthless when he said that. But staying neutral was the best decision he could make.

This meeting had been called too hastily, so there had been no time for Kael to discuss the mages’ stance. That’s why he chose this route.

"I...see..."

The secretary did not look happy with Kael’s decision to remain neutral, but he moved along without singling him out.

"Since two of the three parties have agreed, we shall proceed with the war. Now, our only question is, who should lead our troops? We would ideally want a Sword Master, but we heard that the only available Sword Master, Sir Ken, left on a religious expedition today."

Silence fell around the discussion room and even Kael lamented the bad timing.

A religious expedition was a mandate for a Sword Master. It was a binding contract between them and the gods and needed to be carried out at all costs.

That was why, once a Sword Master received a religious expedition, they could not get out of it. Otherwise, they would lose their powers.

And right now, the only free Sword Master had left on an expedition as well.

’But isn’t this far too coincidental? The reason Ken was in town was because he had just finished an expedition not too long ago. Would he have gotten another one so early?’

Doubt began to creep into Kael’s mind and it only increased when he was suddenly addressed by Cardinal Flux.

"We might not have a Sword Master, but we have a Grand Master here. Sir Kael, I know that the Mage Tower has already declared its neutrality, but we would like to hear your opinion. Please speak, not as a mage of the Mage Tower, but as the hero’s teacher and humanity’s guardian."

Cardinal Flux’s words were carefully chosen and worded in a way that cornered Kael. The smile on the Cardinal’s face reflected his worry, but his eyes looked gleeful.

All eyes were on Kael now and he had to give an answer to satisfy these hyenas.

"As the hero’s teacher, I would like humanity to learn to solve its own problems rather than thrusting my pupil into everything. As far as I am concerned, the reason the hero exists is because of corruption and darkness, not because humans and demons decided to have a conflict."

Kael’s words caused everyone to fall silent. He could feel them all glaring at him because he had not immediately taken humanity’s side.

Cardinal Flux had a beaming smile on his face and victory shone in his eyes. Kael felt interested to see what nonsense he would spout next.

"I see. So you are telling us that you are not on humanity’s side?"

Cardinal Flux tried to corner Kael. However, little did he know that he had lost the second he brought this topic up.

Kael felt a chuckle escape his lips at the accusation.

"Cardinal, do you know of the ancestry of the House of Duke Mikailias?"

"Of course I do. They are the guardians of the three empires and belong to a long line of dragons that married angels and continued their bloodline..."

"Exactly. No matter how much we dilute our blood by breeding with humans, we fundamentally carry different blood in our veins. And my family line is so old that there might be demon blood mixed in here and there. I am even willing to bet that it makes up a larger percentage than the human blood in my veins. Hmm, maybe this means I should take the demons’ side since I am closer to them-"

"Uhm, this discussion...let’s end it here."

The secretary interrupted, not wanting to lose Kael to the demons. He also glared at the Cardinal, which made the elder man bow his head in shame.

And just like that, Kael had won.

He doubted anyone else would involve him in any conversation without risking losing their head...

However, there was one person who did not seem concerned by Kael’s behavior.

"This is all fine. However, I am sure that even you cannot ignore the signs of corruption that are increasing by the day. Who knows how many victims will be created due to this war? Grand Master Kael, won’t you go as the hero’s supervisor to keep the corruption in check?"

Council Head Kristain Han decided to interfere and even involved Leon.
