Chapter 91: Findings and Sadness
Space twisted around them in silence, and they reappeared inside the old warehouse on the outskirts of the city.
The place was dim as always, with a few hanging lights buzzing overhead and casting long shadows across the cracked concrete floor.
The air smelled of dust and old metal. Moon was already there, leaning casually against the wall, alerted to Amon’s arrival.
The goddess stood a few steps back, quiet in her blood-red robe, her eyes blank beneath the Ataroth Mask’s control.
She glanced at Moon, startled to see another equally strong human.
Although he wasn’t as strong as the other two, she could tell Moon was already an S-rank hunter with strength far beyond his rank, just like Amon.
’However, there’s something off about him... almost like he isn’t... human?’ the goddess muttered, feeling as though there was no trace of life within Moon’s body.
Amon thought for a brief moment before giving the goddess an order.
"Stay here with Moon and don’t go anywhere till I return."
The goddess dipped her head immediately.
"As you command, Master."
Her voice came out flat, every trace of godly arrogance stripped away.
"We’re not staying here long," Amon told Mira. "I’ll take you to an apartment where you and your sister will stay in the meantime while I settle a few issues."
Amon rested a steady hand on Mira’s shoulder and said in a deep tone,
"don’t try anything reckless."
The old woman grabbed his sleeve and nodded without needing to be told twice.
With that, Close Yet So Far hummed to life, and the warehouse melted away in a smooth ripple.
They emerged inside a quiet apartment on the fifth floor of a decent building in a calmer district.
It wasn’t flashy, just clean gray walls, a sturdy couch, a small kitchen stocked with the basics, and a comfortable bed in the main room.
The windows overlooked rows of streetlights and the low hum of distant traffic.
It was one of the safe spots Amon had acquired while killing heretics. Moreover, it was far enough from his main place with Kayla that nothing would look suspicious.
He set the young woman down on the bed, careful as her head settled onto the pillows.
Mira moved over immediately, adjusting the blanket and checking her sister’s temperature with the back of her hand. The old woman’s movements were slow and filled with that tired, careful love only someone who had lost too much could possess.
"This apartment is for you two for the next few days, maybe a week," Amon said, leaning against the doorframe. "Stay low. Don’t go out much. I will visit you two as much as I can and increase my strength so we could save her."
Mira straightened and looked at him, her eyes glistening but steady this time.
"Uncle Amon... thank you."
Amon paused mid-step at her words and gave her the faintest, warmest smile he could muster.
"Take care, child."
He ruffled her hair and disappeared using Close Yet So Far.
...
The warehouse felt heavier when he returned.
The goddess stood exactly where he had left her, still as stone beneath the buzzing lights.
Amon walked straight over and called the Ataroth Mask onto his face.
The thing settled with that deep, ancient weight, stretching the shadows and making the air itself feel denser.
"Sit down," he said.
The goddess sat on the metal chair without hesitation.
Amon stood before her, arms crossed, looking down.
The mask pressed relentlessly against her mind. Whatever resistance she had left vanished beneath its influence.
"Tell me everything," Amon ordered. "Your real name. Who you were back in the ancient era. How the whole world ended. The gods, the calamity, the dungeons, every single detail. Don’t hold anything back from me."
The goddess struggled for a brief moment, trying to resist, but it was all futile.
Before long, she began speaking.
Her voice remained steady, yet it carried the crushing weight of ancient memories.
"My name was Elysara Voss. In the ancient times, I was one of the best humanity had. A talent who broke every limit they put in front of me. During the era’s end, the gods noticed my potential and They pulled me in, turning me into one of their servants. A goddess meant to control humans. But I never really bent the knee. I was always looking for a way to rise above them."
Amon paced slowly around the chair, his new leather jacket creaking softly.
The warehouse was utterly silent except for her voice and the occasional drip of water echoing somewhere in the back.
"The ancient era was quite similar to this era. However, the geniuses of old were more terrifying. Each ancient era is always more powerful than the last."
She painted the picture slowly and clearly: vast academies where children trained in skills capable of splitting mountains, hidden laboratories where physiques and artifacts were endlessly experimented upon, grand gatherings where heroes displayed weapons that could alter fate itself.
Amon absorbed every word, comparing it to the broken gates and hunter ranks of this weaker new world.
Elysara Voss continued.
"At first humanity was unaware of the coming danger. We only wanted to get stronger and finally eliminate all the dangers in our world when cracks began spreading across the world."
"No one thought much about the cracks, but soon we had to take it seriously. The cracks spread to every corner of the world, dying the skies red. There was no day or night, only red skies that bled endlessly above us. Time and seasons ceased to exist."
"After this phenomenon, some days later, monsters began pouring endlessly from the skies. The terrifying thing was that each and every one of these monsters were demigods..."
"Above SSS-rank is the rank of demigods. Humanity’s limit is at SSS-rank, so we were unable to contend with the wave of monsters plunging the world into an indefinite crisis. The greatest experts of humanity came together, using all their strength, and managed to force the demigods into a stalemate."
"Unfortunately, it only lasted for barely a few hours before higher-ranked monsters, gods, arrived and wiped everyone out. In the end, I don’t know how this new era came to be. But in the last moments of my life, a god extended a helping hand to me, offering me a chance of survival, and I accepted it. I believe the same situation is about to play out in this era as well..."
Amon analyzed her words and vaguely understood how the new era had been formed.
’It was likely due to the watcher from before...’
The old man had most likely saved two people and created the new generation of humans within the Watcher’s Tower.
’It seems the monsters are unable to deal with the tower. Will my family be safe if I can get my hands on it?’ Amon mused to himself, but he did not linger on the thought for long.
He didn’t like uncertainties.
After thinking for a moment, he asked the goddess a few more questions before finally giving a slow nod.
He was disappointed that she had no method of communicating with whoever had sent her into this world, though he was not overly bothered.
Now everything was handled.
There was only one thing left for Amon.
He would stop signing in and begin gathering fate points to increase the rank of his abilities.
When the calamity finally arrived, he would undoubtedly be prepared.
Amon considered things for another moment, then, after giving Moon and the goddess a few more orders, activated Close Yet So Far and vanished, heading back home.
As soon as he arrived at his door, he called work.
"Hey, Mark?"
A voice answered from the other end.
"Amon? It’s been a while, man. I’m already tired of covering up for you. Boss says if you’re not back here by nex-"
Before he could finish, Amon’s voice cut through.
"I quit."
"Huh?"
Mark felt as though he’d heard wrong, but Amon repeated himself.
"I quit. Don’t worry too much about my decision. I’d advise you to quit as well."
"Why the sudd-"
Before Mark could finish, Amon ended the call.
He let out a quiet breath and lifted his eyes to the sky.
Only twenty-five days remained until the calamity arrived.
Unable to increase his EXP anymore, it was best to spend the remaining time with his family while waiting silently for the calamity and raising his strength to terrifying levels.
With that said, Amon knocked lightly on the door, and Kayla opened it.
