Chapter 89: Rebirth

Amon tried to use Close Yet So Far, but realized that a restriction had appeared in front of him.

He could still force it through, but the moment he touched that option, he understood something far worse. The damage it would inflict on his body would be terrifying beyond measure.

While Amon remained locked in silent contemplation, the goddess felt the space around her begin to distort.

In an instant, her thoughts froze, then dissolved once more into a pool of blood.

"Another instant death?" Her heart filled with alarm as she lost her life again.

Mira, however, couldn’t care less about her.

All she cared about was her sister.

She had already, somewhere deep inside, vaguely accepted the possibility that her sister was dead.

In most of the timelines she managed to reach, there was either no existence of the dungeon at all, or whenever she entered, she would realize her sister wasn’t present.

Only in this timeline did she finally sense her sister’s lifeforce. Yet for some unknown reason, she was unable to enter the dungeon on her own.

She needed someone strong enough.

Back then, she could still sense her sister’s lifeforce...

Even now, despite her sister appearing like a hollow corpse, she could still catch faint, fragile traces of life within her.

She had something no one else had.

Time.

Time was her advantage, and she was prepared to use it to its absolute limit.

Ding!

A ripple echoed silently, and in the next instant, it was as though time itself had come to a standstill.

Mira stretched out her slender hand and placed it gently atop her sister’s forehead.

After taking a slow, steady breath, she spoke in a solemn tone.

"Rewind."

Time paused.

The flow of time around her sister stalled for a long moment, before a faint hint of rosiness began to return to her skin.

Mira’s eyes brightened at the sight.

A wry smile formed on her lips, and in the next instant, she immediately began pouring everything she had into healing her sister.

Mana surged freely from her, intertwined with the time energy she had accumulated over an unknown span of years.

Slowly, the flesh that had once been shriveled began to regain a faint, vibrant hue.

Amon, who was similarly frozen within time, watched the scene unfold with shock in his eyes.

It reminded him of his own regeneration, back when he had nearly lost his life to the god.

But soon, a different expression surfaced on his face as he noticed something strange.

Mira’s white hair gained an even deeper streak of white.

As though she was... changing.

And there was something else.

A dense, suffocating aura of death began to coil around her.

The Watcher’s words surfaced in Amon’s mind, and a vague realization formed.

"Deciding to go against fate would lead to drastic consequences!"

Amon frowned slightly, a wave of suspicion blooming in his heart.

On closer inspection, faint wrinkles had begun to appear at the corners of Mira’s eyes, and on her once slender, soft hand.

Meanwhile, her sister’s skin was no longer shriveled.

"She’s... trading her lifespan for her sister’s?" Amon’s eyes widened as the truth clicked into place.

At a glance, he could tell that bringing someone back from the dead came at a price.

And that price was likely another life.

So Mira was using her own life as payment.

Amon’s brows tightened slightly.

He couldn’t let the little girl die.

They would have to find a way to resurrect her sister, but not at the cost of Mira’s life.

His thoughts moved rapidly. In the next instant, he took a light step forward, and the time that had been shackling him shattered into fragments.

Close Yet So Far activated, and cracks spread across Amon’s body, tearing through his flesh and exposing bone beneath.

He looked like a gory monster forced to move through a frozen world, time itself grinding against his existence. But he didn’t care.

Faint ripples echoed as his flesh already began regenerating.

The only thing that mattered was saving the little girl.

Swoosh!

Amon appeared in front of her.

His hand reached out toward hers.

As his right hand moved, it was simultaneously being destroyed by the frozen time, pain erupting through every nerve. But Amon did not hesitate.

After what felt like an eternity stretched into a single instant, his hand finally landed on Mira’s.

And he forcefully pulled her away.

Mira froze, startled, then slowly turned toward Amon.

The moment Amon saw her face, his heart dropped.

"...Mira..?"

He called out.

Mira now looked like an old lady.

Her hair had turned grey, her once youthful face now carved with deep wrinkles. Her eyes carried a heaviness, a weariness as though she had lived through an endless span of time.

Yet Amon knew the truth.

Mira was still just a little girl.

Only by abusing time had her body been forced into this state.

"What have you done to yourself?" Amon’s voice lowered.

He held the little girl’s hand even as she struggled weakly to pull it free.

Her aged hands were not strong anymore. She couldn’t muster much strength, most of it already drained from her overwhelming consumption of time.

But the reluctance in her eyes made Amon understand everything she wanted to say without words.

"I know you want to save your sister, but not like this..." Amon said softly.

Mira’s aged gaze shifted.

She looked at her sister.

Now, her sister resembled a middle-aged woman who had suffered starvation for days.

Her expression was frozen, her breathing nonexistent, yet Mira could feel it clearly.

If she just pushed a little more, if she just rewound further, she could bring her sister back to the moment she was alive again.

Amon could guess her thoughts. He exhaled faintly.

"Don’t do this, Mira. Your sister wouldn’t want her little sister to sacrifice her life for her..."

His tone was gentle.

And as he spoke, fragments of memory stirred within Mira’s mind.

She knew he was right.

Her sister would never allow this.

But in this moment of irrational desperation, she couldn’t care less. All she wanted was to bring her sister back, and think about everything else later.

Even if her sister would scold her afterward, even if she would be angry, it wouldn’t matter. Because there would be no afterward.

"Un—uncle... I..." Mira tried to speak, but her voice broke into a fragile whisper.

Amon released her hand.

She might look like an old woman now, but to him, she would always be the same Mira he knew.

The little girl who had saved him by reversing time.

The little girl who was willing to throw her life away for her sister.

He gently ruffled her hair.

"I promise, I will find a way to save her..."

His voice carried absolute certainty.

First was the calamity.

After that, Amon would have all the time in the world to save Mira’s sister, and perhaps even restore Mira herself.

Under the weight of his words, Mira slowly seemed to calm.

"You promise?" she asked quietly, staring up at him.

Amon nodded, and ruffled her hair once more.

...

Author’s note: In case you’re wondering, when Mira brought Amon back to life, she only had to rewind time for barely a few hours, so it didn’t take much of a toll on her; however, in her sister’s case, she’s rewinding time years backwards, hence the high consumption! Thank you.
