Chapter 88: Devastation
Amon glanced ahead in shock and surprise.
In front of him stood a woman of breathtaking beauty.
Her long raven-black hair cascaded down her back like a waterfall of silk, framing a face so flawless that it seemed almost unreal.
A pair of crimson eyes shimmered with amusement and hidden malice, carrying the kind of charm that could lure unsuspecting souls to ruin.
She wore a dark violet dress that hugged her graceful figure, its slit revealing a glimpse of her smooth legs with every subtle movement.
Delicate silver ornaments adorned her wrists and neck, accentuating an elegance that felt more befitting of a queen than a prisoner.
The corners of her ruby lips curved upward into a faint smile, seductive and playful, yet carrying an indescribable danger.
She was beautiful.
Beautiful enough to make men lose themselves.
And dangerous enough to make them regret it.
A goddess!
Amon could instinctively tell that this was a goddess, and likely the dungeon boss.
She gave him the same feeling as the god he had faced previously back at the demonic infant faction.
"Interesting... I didn’t think I’d meet another human so soon..." the woman said in a sultry voice, almost as though she were muttering to herself, yet Amon heard her words clearly.
"And he’s at... SSS-rank?!" a startled yelp escaped the woman’s lips as she stared at Amon, her gaze roaming all over his body as though inspecting a prized jewel.
"To think someone so talented as you came here to lose his life..."
"You are the boss monster here?" Amon said calmly, his gaze settling on her.
The mysterious lady tilted her head ever so slightly.
"Do you know that you’re in the presence of a god?" she asked in a warm voice. However, Amon could sense the killing intent hidden beneath it.
The Winter Frost Blade appeared in Amon’s grasp, and a chill spread through the air.
"It would be exciting to kill a god."
Instantly, a melodious laugh escaped the goddess’ lips.
She glanced at Amon and noticed his serious expression.
"Oh? You weren’t joking?"
"How exactly do you plan to kill me?"
"Before that..." Amon calmly interrupted, "tell me what you know about the end of the era."
The woman’s pupils shrank slightly.
Then she muttered to herself after several seconds of silence.
"You’re at SSS-rank, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that you know about that..."
She lingered in silence for a few moments before ultimately shaking her head.
"You cannot stop the calamity..."
After a pause, she added,
"I tried as well, and see where it led me."
Amon was startled into confusion by her words.
The goddess gave a crooked smile.
There was amusement within it, but beneath that amusement lingered something weary.
Something broken.
"In the previous timeline, we almost succeeded, but they were too strong. In the end, only by betraying humankind was I able to maintain my life. Unfortunately, I’ve been imprisoned in this world to ensure that no one survives this time. It’s a... form of entertainment, I guess..."
For a brief instant, something flickered within her crimson eyes.
Fear.
Or perhaps it was reverence.
It vanished too quickly for Amon to tell.
She murmured to herself, almost as though she had forgotten that she was no longer alone.
Or perhaps she simply hadn’t spoken to anyone in far too long.
Amon, on the other hand, picked up some key words from her statement.
After a rough analysis, he came to an unsettling conclusion.
This lady, who was now a goddess...
Belonged to the previous era?
Then what exactly happened?
Based on her words, she betrayed humanity...
A flash of killing intent appeared in Amon’s eyes as he glanced at her.
For someone to betray humanity...
Although he didn’t care about humanity, the actions of the lady repulsed him greatly.
"You want to kill me?" the lady chuckled with a sneer.
"It’s impossible for someone like you to kill a—"
Swish!
Amon vanished from his position.
The next instant, the goddess was unable to react before her head tilted to the side, falling from her body.
Her eyes were dazed as her vision spun and landed on a lady in a seductive dress.
’Is that... me?’
’Am I... dead?’
The lady was startled and dumbfounded as her vision finally blackened completely.
She hadn’t even seen how she had died.
’What sort of inhuman is this? Is he really a human???’
Many questions popped into her mind.
Silence descended upon the chamber.
Amon lowered his blade slightly, his expression remaining calm.
For a brief moment, the only sound was the faint dripping of blood into the pond ahead.
Then, the surface of the blood pond stirred.
Ripples spread outward.
The goddess’ corpse dissolved into blood, flowing into the river. Gradually, a naked woman stepped out from the water.
The goddess touched her neck, her eyes still filled with surprise.
"You killed me?"
Amon stared at her in surprise, not expecting her to resurrect so suddenly.
Sensing that Amon was about to make a move once more, the goddess quickly waved her hand.
"Stop!"
Her words caused Amon to pause in his tracks, not because he wanted to, but because of what she had taken out.
Beside him, Mira let out an uncontrollable gasp.
Her small frame trembled as she glanced at the sight in front of her, letting out a broken whisper.
"Sister?" she called out, her expression a mixture of shock and disbelief.
Ahead of her, in the goddess’ grasp, was a cross, and atop the cross, what seemed to be a skeletal figure was nailed in place.
The figure resembled a dried corpse, with hollow eyes and sunken skin, as though all the blood had been drained from its body.
However, it was unmistakable.
Mira could recognize that figure anywhere.
Mira blinked.
Once.
Twice.
As though her eyes had betrayed her.
Her lips parted slightly, but no words came out.
She simply stared at the cross, frozen in place.
She refused to believe that her sister, whom she had crossed timelines to save, was dead.
Yet one thing bothered Amon.
The corpse remained perfectly preserved despite its withered appearance.
Not a trace of decay leaked from it.
Almost as though it hadn’t truly died.
Or perhaps it was being kept alive for some unknown purpose.
Amon was also taken aback by the sight of Mira’s sister.
A teasing smile appeared at the corner of the goddess’ lips.
She had guessed right.
Amon had come for the lady.
The teasing smile on her lips deepened slightly.
It wasn’t mockery.
It was the look of someone watching a tragedy repeat itself.
"How pitiful... she came here searching for a means to survive the calamity as well... unfortunately... sigh..." the goddess tilted her head slightly, explaining with some regret.
"Sister? Sister answer me!!!"
Mira seemed lost in a world of her own as she cried out, tears already pricking at the corners of her eyes as she struggled to remain calm.
Amon watched the sight, feeling a weight settle in his heart.
He let out a sigh, watching the scene unfold.
Mira glanced at the corpse ahead and, after calling out repeatedly for some time, a crazed expression appeared on her face.
"You can’t die, sis!!! Not even death can take you away from me!!! You promised we’d find mom and dad together!!!"
Finishing her words, Mira stamped her foot, and the air in front of her rippled and slowed faintly.
Amon’s pupils shrank slightly.
Even his movements seemed to stall.
The goddess was also startled and stared at the little girl with a glimmer of curiosity.
’Is this the... power of time?’
Amon recalled that the system had addressed Mira as the Time Witch, so it was only plausible that her awakened ability was related to time. And it seemed she was about to use it
The goddess was stunned, feeling as though she had been submerged in a distorted space. Her thoughts slowed drastically until she was unable to move her body.
"Mira, what are you trying to do?"
On the other hand, the moment Mira made a move, Amon felt a sense of crisis in his heart as he watched her fly toward her sister, who remained embedded upon the cross.
He had a feeling that she was about to do something terrible.
And he had to stop it.
