Chapter 87: Ruin

Amon activated Close Yet So Far.

Space folded around them, and the world vanished for a moment. When everything settled, they stood on rocky ground in front of a huge swirling portal.

The portal glowed with dark purple and blue light, spinning slowly like a giant whirlpool in the air.

Heavy mana filled the place, making the air feel thick.

Amon pulled out his dungeon compass and looked at it.

Just as he expected, the needle pointed straight at the portal.

It kept twitching like something was pulling on it from the other side.

"It seems this is the place," he said quietly. "The final dungeon I have to conquer in this world..."

After clearing all the SS-rank dungeons and having Moon clear all the S-rank and below dungeons, this was the only dungeon left for Amon to conquer.

He felt a little strange as he stared at the dungeon. Things were happening too rapidly...

On the other hand, Mira stared at the portal with big eyes.

She held Amon’s hand tighter and muttered silently, reassuring herself and recalling the dungeon her sister had showed her. "Yes... this is it."

Amon gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Stay close to me and don’t wander off."

Something about the portal felt off to him, like it was watching them step through.

Knowing that it was an SSS-rank dungeon, the only one of its kind in this world, containing a god as its boss monster, Amon knew that the dungeon would be far different from normal.

He pushed the feeling of discomfort he was feeling down and moved forward.

They stepped forward together and walked into the swirling portal.

...

Inside the dungeon, everything changed.

Amon and Mira came out on a wide stone path floating in the middle of a strange sky.

The dungeon was like its own world.

Huge islands drifted in the air, connected by long bridges made of light.

The sky had a soft purple color, and waterfalls of glowing water flowed upward instead of down.

In the distance, tall old ruins stood on the biggest islands, some of them bigger than any building they had seen before.

Mira looked around with her mouth open. "It’s... so big," she whispered.

Amon scanned the area with his senses.

Even at SSS-rank, he could feel how terrifying this place was.

Something about it felt off, like it was hiding parts of itself from him, making him extremely curious about it.

The islands drifted too deliberately, as if adjusting to their presence. "Yeah. This isn’t a normal dungeon."

Amon muttered faintly, almost like he was muttering to himself as he theorized, "It’s like a piece of another world stuck here."

After admiring the sight for some time, they started walking along the glowing bridge.

The path felt solid under their feet, but stars seemed to move inside it.

Soon, they came across the first island ahead.

The first island had a forest of crystal trees, and the trees shimmered and made soft ringing sounds when the wind touched them.

A few glowing animals watched them from between the trees but didn’t attack.

One of them stared at Mira for a long moment before slipping away.

Amon narrowed his eyes faintly, sensing something in the gaze of the beast. The way it looked at her bothered him.

He contemplated killing them off, but noticing their weak strength at just B-rank, he decided to place the thought aside for now.

As they moved deeper, the dungeon showed more of itself bit by bit.

They crossed a river of shining water where small lights swam like fish.

Mira leaned closer to look when suddenly one of the lights took the shape of a small hand waving before it disappeared.

Mira stopped, her hand tightening in Amon’s grasp. Amon felt her tense up, and he quickly snapped his head in the direction and scanned the water, but the shape was already gone.

"What was that?" he asked quietly.

Mira shook her head and thought for a bit before replying, "It looked like... never mind. Let’s keep going."

She didn’t know why, but since she entered here, her emotions had become tumultuous in a way.

She had a bad feeling in her heart but forced it away and decided to continue with their journey. She had to save her sister. Who knows how long her sister had been stuck here for?

The two fell silent once more, moving through the place at an even pace.

Amon had already used his soul and danger sense; however, he hadn’t felt anything in this place, hence the reason he had to explore it himself.

Before long, they reached a place full of floating books and broken stone pillars.

Some of the books opened by themselves when Mira got close, showing strange words and pictures.

One page showed two figures walking on floating islands, holding hands.

The picture kept changing when they weren’t looking directly at it.

Amon glanced at it again and saw the smaller figure reaching out.

He placed a hand on Mira’s shoulder and kept her moving.

This dungeon was extremely strange...

It was showing strange things that he couldn’t piece together; however, he had a vague sense of crisis in his heart.

Amon’s danger sense spread out once more, spanning the whole dungeon; however, he still couldn’t sense anything.

He furrowed his brow, and the two continued their journey in silence.

Hours passed, but it didn’t feel like normal time.

During this time, they faced a few strong monsters along the way, but Amon dealt with them easily.

One big shadow beast roared at them on the third island, and Amon just raised his hand, and the beast turned to dust without much effort.

Mira stayed quiet most of the time, but her eyes kept shining with hope. Every now and then, she pointed out things her sister had mentioned from her study of the dungeon.

Before heading here, the siblings had spent weeks discussing the dungeon.

It was mostly her sister sharing the knowledge she had gathered with the little girl; however, Mira had kept it all in mind.

She was thankful for her decision. Who would have expected that her sister would be trapped and the dungeon would come in handy?

"The big broken tower should be further in," she said softly. "Sister said we have to go past the garden of flowers that don’t die."

As she spoke, a faint whisper floated on the wind, too soft to catch clearly.

Amon’s head turned sharply toward the sound. It almost sounded like a girl’s voice.

Unable to sense anything, he decided to just stay alert for any sign of danger. The deeper they went, the heavier the air felt.

Old whispers floated on the wind sometimes, too faint to make out the words.

And sometimes they saw faint shadows of people who never made it out, standing still and watching them pass.

As they kept going, the dungeon kept opening up more secrets, one island and one bridge at a time.

Amon could feel they were getting closer to the center.

All the way, they had barely encountered any monsters, making him wonder where the majority of the monsters were gathered.

Based on his experience with dungeons, there should be at least tens of thousands of monsters inside an SSS-rank dungeon.

It should have been like a whole country of monsters; however, he hadn’t even encountered a single S-rank monster!

Amon felt that there was something off about it all, but the two continued either way. After all, they hadn’t seen any sign of Mira’s sister yet.

He looked down at Mira. "You doing okay?"

She nodded quickly. "I’m fine, Uncle. Let’s keep going. Sister is waiting."

Amon gave her a small smile, but inside he stayed wary.

He had a vague suspicion in his heart which he didn’t want to be true; however, he could only continue on the path and hope that nothing wrong had happened to Mira’s sister.

It would be saddening to see the little girl heartbroken.

After more than three hours of walking, the two finally reached the center of the dungeon.

As Amon glanced at the center, his expression changed drastically the moment his gaze landed on the sight before him.

Mira’s lighthearted expression was frozen in disbelief as she glanced at the center...

"...sister?" her small voice came out in a whisper filled with surprise.
