Chapter 108: Seven Rulers Of The Night
Far beyond the skies.
Far beyond the lands known to mankind.
Deep beneath an endless abyss where light itself had long since ceased to exist...
A pair of crimson eyes opened.
The surrounding darkness trembled as an ancient creature slowly raised its head.
Its body was so massive that countless lesser nightcrawlers instinctively buried themselves against the ground.
Its voice was ancient, hoarse and filled with endless hatred.
"...One of my children."
Silence...
"...Every last one."
The crimson eyes narrowed as it continued speaking.
"There is... a human."
This was the first time a human had made it feel this way.
For the first time in centuries...
The ancient being stood.
Its towering frame unfolded as endless darkness poured from beneath it.
The abyss itself seemed to reject its presence.
It no longer needed to investigate the source of the death of so many of its kind.
The countless deaths had left behind an unmistakable trace.
A scent.
A human scent.
Its lips slowly stretched into a horrifying smile.
"...Interesting."
The creature took a single step forward, glancing in the direction where it had sensed the trace left behind.
Space shattered and its enormous body disappeared from the abyss.
The countless nightcrawlers were horrified as this was the first time this being was heading out into the real world.
Even back then when they had descended onto this world, the seven rulers hadn’t acted.
They only stayed, watching everything from behind the scenes
However, now... one of them had been forced to act!
...
Amon didn’t do much that day.
Aside from having his meals and idly chatting with Collete, he studied her drawings.
As for the system, he chose to not sign in and instead save the 4 Fate points gotten, choosing to let it pile up a bit before deciding on what to upgrade.
In this manner, night descended once more.
The people of the town hurried indoors much earlier than usual feeling that there was something off about the previous night.
Although the previous night had been strangely peaceful...
No one dared to trust it.
Old habits born from fear could not disappear overnight.
Meanwhile...
Amon quietly slipped through the shadows and stepped outside.
The cool breeze brushed against his face and his expression remained unchanged.
Tonight...
He intended to continue where he had left off.
But the instant his foot touched the empty street...
His instincts screamed.
Move!!
Without hesitation, Amon twisted sideways, trusting his instinct completely.
Boom!
The earth behind him exploded and stones shot through the air like arrows.
The shockwave alone flattened nearby fences, echoing like thunder through the night.
A few townsmen were startled awake by the thundering sound but wisely chose not to go outside for fear of their own safety.
People felt relieved that they trusted their guts and closed early today.
It was as they guessed; this world could never truly retain its former peace!
Meanwhile, Amon slid backward several meters before regaining his footing.
His gaze slowly lifted to stare at what had attacked him
Standing within the settling dust...
Was a monster unlike anything he had ever seen.
It stood nearly three meters tall.
Its flesh was blacker than the surrounding darkness.
Six crimson eyes stared directly into his own.
Jagged horns curved backward from its skull.
Its claws were stained with blood that had never dried.
Most terrifying of all...
The air around it seemed to rot.
The creature inhaled once before speaking
"So..."
Its voice echoed like countless whispers layered together.
"You are the little human."
Amon remained silent as he calmly stared at the creature in front of him, roughly gauging its strength.
The monster tilted its head, seeing this.
"I expected fear."
"I expected despair."
"...Yet all I see..."
Its smile widened.
"...Is curiosity."
The creature slowly raised one claw.
"I am Wrath."
"One of the Seven Sins."
"The ancient rulers of the Abyssal Nightcrawlers."
"And I have come..."
"...To erase you."
The instant the final word fell...
Wrath vanished.
Amon’s eyes widened at the drastic speed displayed by the nightcrawler who called itself wrath.
It was too fast! He almost couldn’t react!
His body reacted purely on instinct.
Clang!
The SS-Rank dagger barely intercepted the descending claw.
The impact blasted him through three abandoned houses.
Wood splintered and stones crumbled under the weight of Amon’s body crashing through the buildings.
Amon rolled across the ground before forcing himself upright.
His arms trembled violently and blood dripped from both hands.
The most terrifying of all was that Amon could sense that the monster hadn’t even used its full strength.
Wrath appeared again instantly in front of Amon the moment he regained his bearing.
Another strike.
Another collision.
This time the dagger was carved across one of its arms as Amon tried moving even faster than before.
For the first time...
The monster bled as black blood oozed out from the scratch Amon’s dagger had left behind purely due to its immensely sharpened state.
Wrath looked down at the wound and smiled faintly.
"...Interesting."
Its smile disappeared soon after.
"You can actually harm me."
Amon answered with action instead of directly replying.
He lunged forward as his steel dagger flashed.
Perfect Rhythm began operating silently as it was a passive skill that acted on its own in the background.
The first exchange echoed between them, then the second... the fourth... fifth...
The tenth.
Every clash refined Amon further, and every strike became cleaner than the last.
His breathing synchronized and his footwork became flawless.
His dagger no longer chased openings.
It created them.
Wrath frowned slightly.
The insignificant child before him...
Was changing.
’No, not changing. He’s improving during battle?’
Impossible!
Wrath refused to believe it but the truth was laid bare before him.
Before the little child could barely touch him, the monster left scratches on his arms; he couldn’t even find a single opening in Amon’s movements.
It was simply flawless!
Boom!
Wrath’s claw pierced straight through Amon’s abdomen.
Having no need to toy with Amon and make the kid only get more refined, he finally used his full strength and shattered the air before him, attacking Amon almost instantly.
Blood erupted like a fountain as Amon’s body flew backward.
The ancient monster didn’t pursue him; instead, it watched in surprise.
The wound slowly closed.
Flesh twisted, bones reformed, and within moments...
The hole was gone.
For the first time in countless centuries...
Shock appeared in Wrath’s eyes as it faintly muttered through its breath.
"...Immortal."
Amon wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.
Then...
He disappeared completely, beginning his next wave of attacks while the momentum was still on.
Perfect Rhythm.
Twenty exchanges.
Thirty.
Forty.
Wrath gradually found itself unable to predict the boy’s movements.
Every attack arrived from impossible angles.
Every dodge carried the smallest possible movement.
The child before him had become a flowing current.
Unstoppable.
The battlefield transformed into a storm of black claws and silver flashes.
Trees collapsed.
The earth split apart.
The forest trembled.
Miles away...
Sleeping birds erupted into the sky.
Wrath roared as darkness exploded from its body.
"I AM WRATH!"
"I AM ONE OF THE SEVEN!"
Amon stepped forward.
For the first time...
He entered the monster’s range willingly.
Wrath laughed wildly as it attacked.
"Die!"
The claw descended.
however, at that exact instant...
Perfect Rhythm reached its peak.
The world seemed to slow.
Every movement.
Every breath.
Every heartbeat.
Everything aligned.
Amon turned his body by less than an inch.
The claw missed.
His dagger rose.
One clean motion.
No hesitation.
No wasted strength.
A single slash.
Silence.
Wrath remained standing.
Its six crimson eyes stared blankly ahead.
"...Impossible..."
A thin black line appeared across its neck.
Then...
Its head slid from its shoulders.
The massive body crashed against the earth with enough force to shake the forest.
The darkness surrounding it rapidly dispersed.
Amon quietly watched.
The ancient corpse slowly crumbled into countless black particles before disappearing into the wind.
No trace remained.
Only silence...
...
Far beneath the endless abyss...
Seven colossal thrones overlooked a sea of eternal darkness.
Each throne radiated a pressure capable of crushing kingdoms.
Upon six of them...
Figures sat in absolute silence.
The seventh throne...
Stood empty.
Crack.
A faint sound echoed throughout the abyss.
Every ruler slowly lifted their heads.
One by one...
Their gazes settled upon the vacant throne.
"...Wrath."
The voice came from a figure wrapped in endless shadows.
No answer came.
Another ruler slowly closed its eyes.
"I can no longer sense him."
Silence spread throughout the chamber.
Impossible.
One of the Seven had vanished.
Not weakened.
Not sealed.
Gone.
A towering figure leaned forward.
"...Who?"
Another answered.
"I do not know."
"But whatever killed Wrath..."
"It exists."
The chamber grew deathly still.
At the center of the abyss...
A pair of ancient golden eyes slowly opened from within the darkness beyond the seven thrones.
A voice, older than the abyss itself, echoed through every corner of the endless void.
"...Find the child."
The six remaining rulers instinctively lowered their heads.
Not out of respect.
Out of fear.
Due to the fact that the child was too far away, no one could precisely pinpoint where the child was; however, they had a vague idea of where to begin their search.
...
Meanwhile, somewhere far above...
Unaware that the gaze of the abyss itself had fallen upon him...
Amon quietly cleaned the blood from his dagger.
The night had only just begun.
