Chapter 107: The Ancient One
[Yes.]
The moment Amon gave the command, the golden screen rippled like disturbed water.
A soft chime echoed inside his mind.
[Signing in...]
[...]
[Sign in successful!]
A second later, countless streams of golden light converged before him.
One line slowly revealed itself.
[Congratulations!]
[You have obtained the SSS-Rank Skill: Perfect Rhythm.]
Amon narrowed his eyes.
"Perfect Rhythm?"
The description unfolded beneath it.
[SSS-Rank Skill - Perfect Rhythm]
[Every successful attack gradually synchronizes your body and mind with the flow of combat.]
[Each consecutive strike increases accuracy, precision, movement efficiency, and reaction speed.]
[The rhythm resets after leaving combat for an extended period.]
[This skill cannot directly increase strength or speed beyond your body’s limits.]
Amon stared at it for several seconds.
It wasn’t a skill that would make him invincible.
It couldn’t allow him to crush mountains or split the heavens.
Instead...
It rewarded continuous battle.
The longer he fought...
The more flawless he became.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"...Not bad."
At least for someone who intended to spend every night fighting...
It suited him perfectly.
The golden screen disappeared.
Almost immediately another one appeared.
[Current Fate Points: 5]
Amon’s gaze shifted toward the dagger resting beside him.
A simple iron dagger.
The only weapon he possessed.
He picked it up.
"Upgrade."
The blade trembled.
[Select Fate Points.]
"All five."
The screen flickered.
[Upgrading...]
[D-Rank → C-Rank]
The rough blade immediately became sharper.
Its edge reflected a colder light.
Without stopping...
[B-Rank]
The metal darkened.
The weight became perfectly balanced.
Its handle fitted naturally into Amon’s palm as though it had always belonged there.
[A-Rank]
A faint silver pattern appeared along the blade.
Merely looking at it gave off a dangerous feeling.
[S-Rank]
The dagger released a quiet hum.
Its edge became so thin that it almost disappeared beneath the light.
Even the surrounding air seemed ready to split apart.
Finally...
Golden light erupted from the weapon.
[SS-Rank]
The room briefly became silent.
The dagger’s appearance changed very little.
If anything, it became simpler.
The silver markings vanished completely.
Its dark blade looked plain.
Almost ordinary.
Yet the instant Amon held it...
He understood.
The weapon had become an extension of his own hand.
There wasn’t the slightest imbalance.
Every movement felt effortless.
As though the dagger itself wanted to cut.
[All Fate Points have been consumed.]
Amon slowly stood.
He slid the dagger into its sheath.
Outside...
The sun slowly sank beneath the horizon.
...
Before long night descended once more and the villagers hurried into their homes.
Doors were barred and windows were shut.
Candles were extinguished as everyone silently prayed for another morning.
Amon stepped outside alone as soon as the night arrived, his expression remaining as calm always.
Perhaps it was due to the unique skill he’d drawn today, he felt a little more confident than before.
Perfect Rhythm.
It was time to see what it could truly do.
...
after walking under the night skies for a bit, the first nightcrawler found him.
Or rather...
It believed it had.
The creature lunged at him the moment Amon revealed himself.
Simultaneously, Amon moved.
With a single step, he released a slash from the dagger.
Having become an SS-ranked weapon, the dagger had become extremely terrifying.
The moment it connected with the head of the nightcrawler, its head quietly separated from its shoulders.
Before its corpse even reached the ground...
A second creature appeared.
Amon’s body flowed naturally.
One movement connected seamlessly into the next.
There was no wasted motion in his movements or hesitation.
As more nightcrawlers poured out from all sides, every kill made the next one smoother.
Every battle sharpened him further making him seem like a god of battle.
Perfect Rhythm.
It had begun.
...
Hours blurred silently as Amon continued his dance of death, claiming the lives of all the creatures in his surroundings.
His movements were silenced and blended by his ability; due to that, the people of the city could hardly tell that a battle was ongoing.
All they could feel was that the winds were slightly stronger than normal tonight.
The streets became rivers of blood.
One by one...
The nightcrawlers vanished.
Some died before realizing they had been attacked.
Others never even managed to scream.
Whenever Amon suffered an injury, his body regenerated almost instantly.
Whenever fatigue threatened to slow him...
Perfect Rhythm carried him forward.
His movements gradually became beautiful.
Like a dance.
A dance that only ended with death.
The SS-Rank dagger sliced through flesh as though it were paper.
Nothing could withstand it.
Every swing claimed another life.
Every step left another corpse.
The town...
Grew quieter.
Unnaturally quieter.
For years...
Every night had echoed with distant screeches.
Tonight...
There was nothing.
There were no cries or frantic footsteps or desperate screams.
There was only silence.
An eerie...
Absolute silence.
Even the wind seemed unwilling to disturb it.
...
The night drifted away, and morning silently arrived.
Golden sunlight bathed the town and the townsmen cautiously opened their doors.
Many immediately frowned as a stench of decayed and rotten blood hit their noses.
"...It’s too quiet."
"Did anyone hear them last night?"
"I didn’t..."
"Neither did I."
People slowly gathered outside as their confusion only deepened as the discussed the events that transpired the previous night.
There wasn’t a single screech. At first there were screeches and disturbances, but they gradually died off, almost as though someone had handled them.
There was no strong hunter around, so who could have dealt with the nightcrawlers the previous night?
Just then, a middle-aged worker stumbled out from the road leading toward the forest.
His face was deathly pale and his entire body trembled uncontrollably.
Someone quickly grabbed him and eyed him suspiciously, recognising him as one of the older experts of the town.
"What happened?"
The man opened his mouth several times before words finally escaped.
"I..."
"I arrived late..."
"And before I could enter, night arrived. I hid in the mountains hoping and praying for my survival..."
He pointed toward the distant forest with a shaking finger.
"They’re gone."
Silence descended as the crowd glanced at each other
"What do you mean gone?" someone asked and the man swallowed hard
"I searched the outskirts and I couldn’t find a single one."
His breathing became erratic as he recalled the terrifying image of the previous night."
"There weren’t any nightcrawlers."
"Not..."
"Not even one."
The crowd froze, staring at the man in disbelief.
Impossible.
For as long as anyone could remember...
The monsters had ruled the night.
Yet overnight...
They had simply...
Disappeared?
No one noticed the young boy quietly sitting inside Kirby’s house.
Amon leaned against the wooden chair, his eyes closed.
The scent of blood still clung faintly to his clothes.
Hidden beneath the table...
His fingers lightly rested on the hilt of the black dagger.
Calm.
Silent.
Waiting for night to fall again.
...
The sun continued its slow descent.
The quiet that had blanketed the town never truly disappeared.
Even as merchants reopened their stalls and children cautiously wandered back into the streets, an invisible weight lingered in the air.
No one understood why.
Only Amon did.
He sat silently beside the window, his eyes closed.
His breathing was slow.
Steady.
The black dagger rested across his lap.
It had become frighteningly ordinary to look at.
Yet beneath that plain exterior lay a blade that had crossed the boundary between ranks.
The room remained silent.
Then...
A cold sensation washed over him.
Amon slowly opened his eyes as he sensed something.
His pupils contracted as he snapped his head in the direction of the distant space.
Something...
Had looked at him.
Not with ordinary eyes.
Something impossibly distant had locked onto his existence.
Amon didn’t know why, but he felt that it must be related to the nightcralwers he’d dealt with.
...
Far beyond the skies.
Far beyond the lands known to mankind.
Deep beneath an endless abyss where light itself had long since ceased to exist...
A pair of crimson eyes opened, and the surrounding darkness trembled incessantly as though they couldn’t bear the weight of his presence.
An ancient creature slowly raised its head.
Its body was so massive that countless lesser nightcrawlers instinctively buried themselves against the ground, terrified of its presence.
The creature’s mouth parted to speak as its gaze swept through the endless horde of nightcrawlers gathered.
Its voice was ancient, hoarse, and filled with endless hatred...
