Chapter 106: A Killer By Night
Amon stared at the nightcrawler silently, his heart beating just a little faster.
He tightened his grip on the dagger in his hand.
It was as though time itself had frozen. However, the next instant, the creature lunged at Amon.
Amon instinctively halted his skill, preparing to attack.
Just as Amon was about to defend himself, a sharp voice cut through the silence of the night.
"A kid?" the voice was filled with surprise and confusion. "What’s a kid like you doing out at night?"
The moment the man finished speaking, he threw himself between the little child and the nightcrawler without caring much for his own life.
Swoosh!
The sharp sound of flesh being sliced echoed through the night, and blood splattered across Amon’s face.
The man’s head floated into the air before rolling to a stop.
The sight was particularly eerie, and strangely enough, it looked just like the picture the little girl, Collete, had painted.
With blood staining his face, Amon froze in horror and terror.
Just at that moment, a sharp object pierced through his back, burying itself in his heart.
Screeechhhh.
A piercing screech rang out as Amon’s body was tossed aside like a ragdoll, his heart completely pierced by the nightcrawler.
Amon’s eyes widened with terror as he stared at the nightcrawler ahead.
Having killed him, the nightcrawler no longer paid him any attention. It was already moving toward another target.
It was as though the creature possessed some form of intelligence.
Amon instinctively clutched the empty space where his heart had been.
Strangely enough, instead of losing consciousness, he only felt an excruciating amount of pain.
However, despite that, he could feel the flesh beneath his skin wriggling and regenerating at a speed as fast as lightning.
In the blink of an eye, his skin was whole again, and Amon touched the smooth flesh over his chest.
’This...’
Amon’s mind was filled with confusion.
He thought he’d died... however...
Amon lay still for a few seconds before slowly standing up.
His gaze pierced through the darkness, and after a brief delay, his eyes brightened as he rushed in the direction of the nightcrawlers.
If his guess was right, and he could regenerate endlessly...
Then the nightcrawlers had just become his playground!
Swoosh!
Amon blended into the night, moving at lightning speed.
Before long, he arrived at the location of two nightcrawlers.
Without waiting for them to sense his presence, he moved with fluid grace.
His dagger flashed like lightning as it stabbed into the back of the nightcrawler.
Screeechhhh.
A sharp screech echoed, and the next instant, Amon’s dagger pierced through the creature’s heart, claiming its life.
Amon felt a surge of energy flow into his heart.
[Congratulations on Levelling Up!]
Amon glanced at the notification. Although he was startled by it, he knew he had to focus on the next nightcrawler, which was already staring at him with bright red eyes.
A claw descended instantly toward Amon’s small frame, and although he reacted almost immediately, the claw still grazed his shoulder, bringing another wave of excruciating pain.
Still, Amon didn’t pause in the slightest, already certain that his injuries would begin regenerating.
The nightcrawler was briefly startled by the human before it, but without hesitation, it attacked once more.
Another claw swiped forward.
However, Amon had already moved.
He became a fluid shadow, striking the creature across the neck.
The nightcrawler remained frozen for a few seconds before slowly losing its life.
[Congratulations, you have levelled up!]
Amon lowered his gaze to the creatures before him.
Their bodies were already beginning to dissolve into drifting wisps of dust.
Amon stared at them for a few seconds, breathing heavily.
Still, he could clearly feel the drastic increase in his strength after levelling up twice.
Amon didn’t want to ask any questions for now.
All he wanted to do was kill...
A wave of killing intent surged through his heart, and Amon decided to turn the night into his playground.
Swoosh!
Amon blended into the shadows once more.
Before long, he had swept through the city, slaughtering every nightcrawler in sight.
In barely five hours, he had killed roughly a hundred nightcrawlers.
Amon stood at the edge of the forest, drenched in blood.
It was his blood.
Having come close to death countless times throughout the night, the little child’s mentality seemed to have hardened drastically.
He glanced at the forest ahead, a deathly chill lingering in his eyes.
Looking up at the sky, he estimated that there were still more than six hours before morning arrived.
’With this much time, will I be able to wipe out all the nightcrawlers in the forest?’ Amon asked no one in particular as he stepped into the shadows.
...
The next day, Collete stirred awake and let out a slow breath.
She turned toward the table, and her eyes couldn’t help but tremble when she noticed the boy seated there, his head lowered as though he were sleeping.
’How was he alive?’
That was the question she wanted to ask.
What many people didn’t know was that Collete was... different in a way.
Another thing that deepened her loneliness was the fact that she possessed a gift.
She knew that once her gift was discovered, she would definitely be killed.
Whenever she drew, whatever she drew always came to pass.
She’d tried stopping herself from drawing. However, it was as though she was compelled to keep doing it.
The last time she resisted, a sudden feeling of weakness washed over her.
After three days, it felt as though she might lose her life at any moment.
Although Collete didn’t have many expectations of life after being abandoned by all her friends, she still cared deeply about her parents.
She knew they would be devastated if they found out she had died.
That night, with tears filling her eyes, she drew.
The next morning, the old farmer she had drawn was dead.
Collete believed she was the one who had killed him.
Those thoughts only served to make her even more devastated.
Whenever she drew, whatever she created always came to pass within at most two days.
And now, two days later, Amon was still here.
Perfectly alive.
’Could it be that my gift no longer works?’
For the first time in a long while, Collete almost felt relieved that she might finally be free from the gift she had always believed to be a curse.
It had held her in bondage for as long as she could remember.
However, at that moment, her father entered the room.
His expression was calm, but Collete could immediately tell that something was wrong.
"Something happened. Old John is dead. I’ll be out for a while today. You two take care of yourselves."
Kirby walked over and gently ruffled his daughter’s hair.
Collete’s eyes trembled, but she kept herself composed.
"Alright, Dad," she simply said.
Kirby briefly turned toward Amon before finally walking out of the room.
As soon as her father left, Collete’s eyes trembled as an image appeared in her mind.
’Dad...’
She whispered faintly, her heart filling with terror as she realized the vision was about her father.
Collete remained silent for a few seconds before shifting her attention back to Amon.
Getting into her wheelchair, she rolled over to where he sat.
After a brief hesitation, she confirmed that he was really breathing.
With that, she gently tapped his shoulder.
The image she’d just seen...
She didn’t want to draw it.
However, she could already feel that compelling force stirring within her mind, urging her to draw the image that refused to leave it.
Amon’s eyes slowly opened.
For a brief moment, they were unfocused, as though his mind was still wandering somewhere far away. Then they settled on the small hand resting against his shoulder.
Collete quickly pulled it back.
"You’re awake..." she murmured.
Amon blinked once before straightening his back.
His body no longer carried a trace of the countless wounds from the previous night. Only the faint scent of dried blood lingering on his clothes remained.
He silently looked at Collete.
The girl’s fingers tightened around the wheels of her chair.
"I..."
Her lips parted, only for the words to become lodged in her throat.
Before long Amon excused her.
Collete remained motionless on her seat.
The image in her mind only became clearer with every passing second.
Her breathing grew heavier.
She knew resisting was pointless.
That strange force had never once allowed her to escape.
Slowly, she reached for the sketchbook resting on the table beside her. Her trembling fingers picked up the pencil.
Without another word, the tip of the pencil touched the paper.
Scratch.
Scratch.
The room fell into silence, broken only by the soft sound of graphite gliding across the page.
Her hand moved on its own.
Her expression gradually paled as line after line appeared on the paper, forming an image she didn’t want to see.
Amon quietly watched her for a moment before withdrawing his gaze.
Since she had already begun drawing, there was nothing he could do until she was finished.
Walking over to the bed, he sat down and leaned lightly against the wooden frame.
Almost immediately, a familiar golden screen appeared before him.
