Chapter 105: Upgrade 2
Amon reached out and lightly tapped the floating {+1}.
The instant his finger made contact, the familiar golden screen flickered before him.
[Would you like to consume 1 Fate Point to enhance Iron Dagger (F-rank)?]
[Current Fate Points: 2]
Amon’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Enhance?
He lowered his gaze to the battered dagger in his hand.
Without much hesitation, he made his decision.
’Yes.’
A soft golden radiance flowed from the screen and wrapped itself around the dagger.
The light wasn’t dazzling.
Instead, it quietly seeped into the metal, as though nourishing it from within.
The worn blade trembled faintly.
The chips along its edge slowly smoothed over.
Tiny cracks disappeared one after another.
The dull, gray metal gradually deepened into a darker iron sheen.
Even the grip, whose leather wrapping had nearly come apart, tightened around the handle as though it had been newly replaced.
A few seconds later, the glow faded.
[Enhancement successful.]
[Iron Dagger has advanced from F-rank to E-rank.]
Amon blinked.
The dagger felt... different.
It hadn’t become larger or more extravagant.
Its appearance remained simple.
Yet the blade looked noticeably sharper, and the balance in his hand had improved considerably.
He gently swung it through the air.
Whoosh.
The movement felt smoother than before.
His eyes brightened.
He glanced toward the floating symbol.
The {+1} still remained.
After a brief moment of thought...
He tapped it again.
The golden screen reappeared.
[Would you like to consume 1 Fate Point to enhance Iron Dagger (E-rank)?]
[Current Fate Points: 1]
’Yes.’
Once again, golden light poured into the dagger.
This time, the changes were more apparent.
The blade elongated by a few centimeters.
The once blunt spine became cleaner and more refined.
Faint patterns resembling flowing veins gradually appeared across the dark iron, subtle enough that they could only be noticed upon close inspection.
The edge reflected a cold glint beneath the afternoon sunlight.
Even the worn wooden handle transformed.
The coarse grip became smoother, wrapped with tightly bound black leather that rested comfortably in his palm.
The weapon no longer resembled discarded scrap.
It looked like a proper dagger.
The light dispersed.
[Enhancement successful.]
[Iron Dagger has advanced from E-rank to D-rank.]
Amon silently examined it.
Compared to moments ago, it was as though the dagger had been reforged by a skilled craftsman.
The difference wasn’t merely in appearance.
Even without swinging it, he could feel that it had become sturdier.
Sharper.
Deadlier.
Instinctively, his gaze drifted toward the floating symbol again.
He reached out.
The moment he touched it...
A notification appeared.
[Insufficient Fate Points.]
[Current Fate Points: 0]
[Unable to enhance Iron Dagger.]
Amon paused before letting out a quiet breath.
So Fate Points were consumed each time he enhanced an item.
That meant they weren’t something he could waste carelessly.
If a simple discarded dagger could improve this much...
What about something stronger?
The thought lingered in his mind for only a moment before he pushed it aside.
He had already achieved what he’d come for.
With the dagger hanging by his side, Amon quietly returned to Collete’s room.
The little girl was still seated before the table.
Pencil in hand.
Her gaze remained fixed on the drawing before her.
She didn’t even look up when he entered.
Only the steady scratching of graphite against paper echoed through the room.
Amon didn’t disturb her.
He quietly sat on the bed, resting the dagger beside him.
Time slowly slipped by.
The afternoon sun gradually lost its warmth.
Golden light faded from the room.
Soon...
The familiar aroma of food drifted in from outside.
Kirby’s wife gently called them over for dinner.
The meal remained as quiet as the previous one.
No one spoke much.
Only the occasional clink of bowls and chopsticks broke the silence.
Before long, dinner ended.
The sun continued descending.
The bright skies gradually dimmed.
Outside, the once lively workshops began closing one after another.
Workers hurried through the streets.
Heavy locks clicked into place.
Doors slammed shut.
The familiar tension quietly spread throughout the settlement.
Night...
Had returned.
Before long, the distant roars echoed once again.
Then came the shrill, chilling screams.
The sounds rose from every direction, sending faint vibrations through the walls.
Kirby shut every window before giving the two children a brief glance.
"Get some rest."
He extinguished the final lantern outside before leaving the room.
The door quietly closed behind him.
Silence settled.
Only the cries outside remained.
Amon slowly picked up the dagger resting beside the bed.
Its dark blade reflected almost no light beneath the dim room.
His fingers tightened around the grip.
Unlike yesterday...
He wasn’t completely powerless anymore.
He possessed a weapon.
And more importantly...
He possessed Shadow Stealth.
An SSS-rank skill perfectly suited for the darkness.
His eyes shifted toward the tightly shut window.
Beyond it...
The night belonged to the nightcrawlers.
But tonight...
He intended to step into their world.
Amon remained seated for several minutes.
He wasn’t in a hurry.
The distant roars rose and fell outside like crashing waves, sometimes close enough to make the wooden walls creak.
Only after the sounds had settled slightly did he stand.
His movements were careful.
Deliberate.
He glanced toward Collete.
The little girl had already fallen asleep, her breathing slow and even.
For a brief moment, his gaze lingered on her peaceful face before shifting away.
Without making a sound, Amon picked up the dagger.
Its cool handle rested comfortably against his palm.
He walked toward the door.
Creak...
The wooden door opened just enough for him to slip through.
He gently closed it behind him.
The hallway was empty.
Moonlight filtered through the cracks in the boarded windows, leaving long strips of pale light across the floor.
The rest was swallowed by darkness.
The instant Amon stepped into the shadows...
He felt something change.
It wasn’t visible.
Nor was it physical.
It was a strange sensation, as though the darkness itself had quietly wrapped around him.
The golden screen appeared.
[Shadow Stealth has been activated.]
Amon lowered his head and looked at his body.
Nothing seemed different.
Yet...
For some reason, he felt... hidden.
His breathing unconsciously became lighter.
Even the faint sound of his footsteps seemed to disappear into the darkness.
He quietly descended the stairs.
The first floor was equally silent.
Kirby and his wife had already retired to their room.
A faint glow seeped from beneath the closed door before eventually fading.
Moments later...
Complete silence filled the house.
Amon reached the entrance.
His hand rested on the wooden lock.
He slowly lifted it.
Click.
The sound was almost inaudible.
He waited.
No movement came from inside the house.
Satisfied, he gently pushed the door open.
A cool night breeze greeted him.
The moment he stepped outside, the atmosphere changed completely.
The streets that had been bustling with merchants only hours ago now resembled a ghost town.
Every workshop was shut.
Every window was sealed.
Not a single lantern remained lit.
Only the pale moon hung above, casting a cold glow over the deserted settlement.
The silence was unsettling.
Until...
A distant scream pierced the night.
It lasted only a second before abruptly stopping.
Amon instinctively tightened his grip around the dagger.
His heartbeat accelerated.
He forced himself to remain calm.
Panicking now would only get him killed.
Slowly...
He began walking.
Keeping close to the walls of the buildings, he avoided the open streets, moving from one patch of darkness to another.
Each step was measured.
Each breath carefully controlled.
The deeper he advanced, the quieter the surroundings became.
No insects.
No birds.
Nothing.
It was as though every living creature had abandoned the night.
Then...
A wet sound echoed somewhere ahead.
Crunch.
Crunch.
Amon immediately froze.
His pupils contracted.
The sound came again.
Closer this time.
Crunch...
Crunch...
Something...
Was eating.
He slowly leaned his head past the corner of the building.
Roughly thirty meters away, beneath the moonlight, stood a creature over two meters tall.
Its emaciated body was covered in charcoal-black skin stretched tightly over protruding bones.
Long, twisted limbs ended in claws that gleamed like polished knives.
Its back arched unnaturally, while dozens of crimson veins pulsed beneath its flesh.
The creature crouched over what appeared to be a human corpse.
Each bite tore away chunks of flesh with sickening ease.
Blood pooled beneath it, reflecting the pale moonlight.
Crunch.
The creature tore off another mouthful.
Amon’s breathing almost stopped.
So...
This...
Was a nightcrawler.
At that very moment, the creature suddenly paused.
Its head slowly lifted.
Then, with an unnerving crack, its neck rotated almost one hundred and eighty degrees.
Its hollow, crimson eyes stared directly toward the alley where Amon stood.
Instinctively amon felt as though all his secrets had been laid bare before the creature’s gaze.
It was like staring into the endless abyss, while the abyss stared back at you.
...
