Chapter 101: A New World... A New... Human?

"I..."

"I can’t remember anything."

Amon said with a dazed expression as he glanced at the couple standing before him.

The woman smiled faintly and leaned down, gently ruffling his short silver hair.

"Its alright, kid. You can come with us. Although we’re small-time merchants, we’ve already finished selling our goods and are on our way back home."

The man, on the other hand, had a slight change in expression upon hearing his wife’s words.

Cassie simply shot him a glance, and whatever words of refute he wanted to utter were forced back down his throat.

Amon stared at Cassie and the warm smile on her face.

For a moment, hesitation flickered through his heart.

He felt as though he was forgetting something important. Something very important.

However, he couldn’t tell what exactly it was.

After some time, he nodded at the couple, still visibly disoriented.

Cassie’s smile blossomed even further.

She helped Amon up from the ground and steadied him as he got to his feet.

Amon glanced around faintly, taking in the scenery.

"Shall we?" Cassie asked as she led the way.

"A-alright..." Amon replied before following the couple.

...

Valethrone City was a small city located within Eastwing State.

Together with the couple, Amon entered the city.

"Hey, Kirby, already back from selling cobblestones?"

"Nice to see you, Archie. I see you’re still huddled up finishing that woodwork!"

Kirby chuckled and chatted idly with a few men.

"Who’s the kid?"

One of them spoke up, noticing Amon’s scrutinising gaze sweeping across the surroundings.

"Him? I found him in the woods earlier."

The expressions of a few men changed subtly, though they quickly concealed it.

Cassie led Amon toward their home while her husband remained outside chatting with the men.

Soon, Amon found himself inside a two-bedroom apartment.

The place was well furnished and carried a warm scent that felt strangely familiar.

Subconsciously, a faint yearning stirred within his heart.

Confused, Amon pushed the feeling aside.

What was happening to him?

"Come, I’ll introduce you to our daughter. She’s around your age..." Cassie’s face carried a rare smile, along with a trace of hidden sadness, as she led him toward a room.

Amon nodded without much resistance.

Soon, the two arrived outside the room.

After a brief hesitation, a childish voice sounded from within.

"You can come in, Mom."

Cassie finally released a breath she hadn’t realised she was holding and pushed the door open before stepping inside.

The moment Amon’s gaze swept across the room, he was slightly startled.

In front of him sat a little girl who appeared to be around the same age as him.

She had faint freckles scattered across her face and could be considered quite pretty.

Only, her eyes were dull and lifeless, as though she no longer held any expectations, goals, or ambitions.

Amon noticed that she was seated in a wheelchair.

She rolled herself forward toward her mother.

Yet her expression didn’t change in the slightest.

It remained dull.

Lifeless.

"Hey, Coll..." Cassie called softly as she squatted down to her daughter’s level and looked into her eyes.

Collete tilted her head ever so slightly and stared at Amon, a trace of curiosity flickering within her gaze.

Cassie turned toward her and smiled.

"See? I brought you a friend. Be nice to him, okay?"

Collete stared at Amon for several seconds.

There was still no ripple in her eyes.

Amon felt there was something off about the little girl as well...

However, he couldn’t quite place his finger on what exactly felt so strange about her.

After a stretch of silence, the sound of the wheelchair creaking echoed softly through the room as Collete rolled back toward her desk.

She pulled open a cupboard drawer, took out a sheet of paper and a pencil, then began scribbling.

Collete let out a faint sigh before turning toward Amon.

"Can you stay with her for a while?"

Amon was confused by her choice of words.

Cassie herself was slightly startled by what she was asking.

She had only just met the little boy in the woods, yet she wanted to leave him alone with her daughter.

That wasn’t something anyone in their right mind would normally do.

Still, Cassie vaguely knew why she was doing this.

Her daughter could only be described as pitiful.

Because she had been born crippled, she had been ostracised by her classmates at school.

No one wanted to be her friend.

Gradually, she had learned to distance herself from the world.

She no longer associated with anyone, almost as though she had given up on life and was simply waiting for death to arrive.

As her mother, seeing her in such a state pained her deeply.

Now, however, she had finally found someone around her daughter’s age.

She hoped the two would become friends.

Perhaps her daughter could finally be brought out from the shell she had hidden herself inside.

Cassie mulled over her thoughts for a few moments before excusing herself and leaving the two alone.

Even after closing the door, however, she remained standing outside quietly, listening to hear what they would talk about.

Amon scratched the back of his messy hair.

Time slowly passed.

Only the faint sound of pencil against paper continued to echo through the room.

After standing there for nearly fifteen minutes, Amon finally took a few quiet steps forward to see what she was drawing.

It looked like some sort of artwork, and he couldn’t help feeling curious.

Upon reaching her side, he glanced down at the paper.

Collete’s movements didn’t pause.

If anything, it was as though she hadn’t even noticed him.

She had long since grown accustomed to ignoring everyone.

This was no different.

Amon couldn’t completely make out the drawing at first, but before long, the image became clear.

On the paper was a little boy.

Or at least, what seemed to be a little boy.

A sharp claw was impaled through his chest.

Something resembling blood poured from his mouth, and it was obvious his death was inevitable.

The boy’s eyes were wide with shock.

For a moment, Amon vaguely felt that the figure looked like...

Him.

He was startled.

At the same time, he found himself amazed by the detail within her artwork.

After thinking for a few moments about how to compliment it, he finally spoke.

"The drawing looks nice."

Collete’s hand paused slightly.

Her eyes trembled, as though a faint emotion had surfaced from somewhere deep within.

But it vanished just as quickly.

She returned to her drawing.

More than thirty minutes later, she finished shading and outlining the piece.

She pulled open a drawer and tossed the paper inside.

Placing both hands on the table, she remained silent for several seconds before finally speaking in a cold, distant voice.

"...thank you..."

After that, she rolled her wheelchair toward the window and stared blankly into the distance.

Amon was confused by her behaviour.

Just as he was about to make a move, a mechanical chime echoed within his mind.
