Chapter 44: 44: Threat

He asked as the three messengers stared at each other and slowly nodded.

"There’s no problem. We just wanted to make sure that troublesome female is out of sight. The tribe can’t stand her at all," the deer said.

Ash smiled. "No problem. We want her out of sight more than you do. Maybe next time, instead of sending an F-rank female, try sending an A-rank female or something."

The deer scoffed. "Why bother when nothing can even soothe you pathetic monsters?" He cleared his throat while they all slowly got up to their feet.

The second antelope said, "We won’t waste our time in this filthy land anyway. We just came here to pass down vital information. Make sure you get the food stuff ready and send them all today unless..."

"Maybe if you send out the medication we’ll consider," Zark said coldly, furious. "That’s a fair deal enough, don’t you think so?"

The messengers were speechless as they stared at him. "You pathetic monster.. you dare question us huh?"

The deer smiled as he said, "Okay. Since you’re feeling rebellious we’ll show you what real power is.. brace yourself for the worst!" They had instantly gotten pissed off as they turned and stormed out of the hall.

With them gone, the three of them sat there in silence, staring into thin air.

"You really just had to speak and get them mad. Now I wonder what they’ll do this time..." Vale sighed.

"Clearly something diabolical," Ash sighed. "I don’t have strength for any of their drama. I think we should just send them all the food we have. And maybe we can think of something else."

Vale slowly nodded. "I also think so. Maybe before today runs out. If not, I can’t tell what they’ll throw at us," he explained.

"I just can’t stand those bastards anymore. I just can’t take it.." Zark said in a low growl, fists clenched.

"We have no choice. They have the upper hand and call the shots. Even if we’re S-rank, we’re just wild pawns in their hands. They hold control..and that’s our reality," Vale sighed as he shook his head.

They were quiet for a while as Zark stared at them. "And you two.. why are you protecting that female? Have your brains finally been conquered by that F-rank?"

Ash smiled. "I guess it has. She’s actually interesting to be around.. you just have to spend time with her to know."

Vale held a cold expression but he found himself slowly nodding in agreement as he added, "And she’s smart too..."

Zark shook his head. "You two ... I have no hopes for you anymore. Me? Get to know that female? What possibly could an F-rank female do for me?"

"Soothe you," Ash said with a smile. "At least you can’t deny she’s good at that."

"..." Zark was quiet as he cleared his throat. "Whatever, let’s talk about the matters at hand. Forget about her. How do we handle this?" He changed the topic.

Ayra didn’t take her beauty bath. Commander Lynn had insisted they leave immediately and she had no choice but to follow the nagging commander off.

"Are you sending me out of the tribe for good?" She asked as she followed him behind.

"No. Temporarily."

"Why? What’s happening?" She was confused.

"Some men from your tribe came. So he wants you to be sent out so they don’t see you still alive," he casually replied as he kept moving. He was walking ahead while Ayra followed behind, struggling to catch up.

"..." She blinked, surprised and impressed. "Woah, so he’s basically protecting me...?" She smiled. "That’s cute.. I guess we’ve gotten to this point."

She looked up ahead at him. "Are those men staying there all day? Will I be out all day?"

"No, probably for a couple of hours. We’ll be heading back soon anyway," he said casually while walking.

Ayra sighed. "You almost scared me this morning. I thought you all were finally going to stone me to death or something." She stared at herself. "Didn’t even take my beauty bath because of that. What a shame."

"There should be a stream ahead. You can still take your bath there if you want," he casually said, still walking as if he was looking for something.

"Oh, is that so? Is it even safe?"

"Hard to say..." he explained. "But some of our men go there to wash up when we’re out on patrol."

She blinked. "Ah... I see.."

Ayra gently ran her hands through her stomach. It groaned, and she could feel warmth building up around it. Ayra wondered if she was hungry because she hadn’t eaten anything this morning at all. And for last night what she ate.. was wild.

But she brushed the thought aside as she continued following while wondering where Lynn was even moving to. "Since we’re out here to kill time, why don’t we just rest somewhere or something. Why are you moving so quickly to...?"

He was still walking as he said, "Originally I came out to look for something. So I just brought you along."

She raised an eyebrow. "Looking for something? What’s that?"

He was quiet. He kept moving.

"Hey, you’re not going to respond to me again or what?" She asked as he slowly came to a stop at a spot.

She watched as he ran his eyes through the place, studying it carefully while he bent down and ran his fingers through the ground. Tasting and sniffing it while he looked around. It was clear he was tracking down something, and Ayra was curious.

"What is it you’re looking for? You never know, I might be of help?" She said staring at him.

Commander Lynn stared up at her. "No need. You wouldn’t know even if I told you," he said and continued searching the space.

Ayra sighed, folding her arms. "And how would you know that? I know a lot of things you know. So just tell."

He was quiet. And just when she was about giving up knowing, Commander Lynn had casually said.

"Nyx. I’m looking for Nyx. One of our tribe members."
