Kui Yi didn’t waste time asking her about how she knew. He took two steps back and arched his body nervously, as if the door would fly open the next second. The short encounter with the ghost left a deep impression on Kui Yi’s heart. His previous escape was lucky. He might not be as lucky again. Kui Yi’s heart chilled as he stared at the door.
“We shouldn’t create more trouble,” Kui Yi whispered. His voice trembled, “This place might not contain any clues… The thing might be hiding inside. We should meet up with the others first.” The room probably had a nurse scared witless by the ghost.
After a short hesitation, Lin Wan ‘Er announced, “I want to look into the room.” Lin Wan ‘Er had exchanged information with Jiang Cheng. This nurse was not as simple as they thought. Even though her legs were broken, she’d climb from the ninth floor to the sixth floor. It was the nurse who led the travellers to believe they had encountered the ghost.
What kind of obsession drove her to do something like that? Plus… No one knew what secrets the nurse was hiding.
For Kui Yi, unknown meant danger. The greater the unknown, the higher the danger.
“Don’t go.” Kui Yi said, “Listen to me. Don’t take the risk. If it’s necessary, we’ll come back when we find the others…”
Lin Wan ‘Er turned to glance at him. “You don’t have to come with. Just wait for me here.”
Kui Yi was startled. He didn’t expect the woman to be so courageous. Lin Wan ‘Er didn’t give him the time to think. She pressed on the door. The door eased open easily. The room was very dark. One had to rely on the light in the corridor. The room had a bed in the middle. There was no table or cupboard. Even the windows were covered by curtains. The room was barren. The windowsill was empty. The room gave off an oppressive feeling. Even on a sunny day, this room would be thick with darkness.
There was a person lying in bed. One couldn’t see them clearly. Their face was hidden in the dark.
The room gave Kui Yi a bad feeling. It was like a trap waiting for them to walk in. Before Kui Yi could stop her, Lin Wan ‘Er already strode in. Honestly, Kui Yi didn’t want to go in. He was furious and helpless about Lin Wan ‘Er’s rash decision. He looked around. The eerie corridor scared him. If he left on his own, he might be in trouble. However, he couldn’t just wait outside as the woman suggested. He couldn’t be sure if Lin Wan ‘Er would come back out. Even if she did…
How would he know if she were still a human? Kui Yi gritted his teeth and entered the room. He made sure to leave the door open. He couldn’t find anything to block the door, so he took out the leftover bandage from his pocket, rolled it up and squeezed it between the door and the floor, making a temporary doorstop.
Lin Wan ‘Er stood beside the bed. Kui Yi’s gait was light, as if worried about waking up the mad nurse or something sinister in the dark. Neither of them switched on their flashlights.
When Kui Yi got closer, his eyes shrank. The patient had curled themselves up into a ball, hidden under the blanket. The person under the blanket was shivering from fear. Were they afraid of Lin Wan ‘Er and Kui Yi or something else?
The mad nurse had lost her mind, but her ability to detect those things might still work. Kui Yi had encountered similar characters in other missions. People’s fear of those things was carved into their bones. However, based on the nurse’s reaction, Lin Wan ‘Er might be right. She might know something.
“Don’t be scared,” Kui Yi whispered. “We’re here to help you. You can tell us if you need anything. If you have anything important, you can hand it to us.”
The nurse shook harder. It was quite funny because the blanket was not that big. As she trembled, her body under the blanket was slowly exposed.
The nurse hugged her head tightly as if worried about seeing or hearing something. Her feet were exposed. Her skin was very white, the kind that would appear pale in the dark. It made the travellers feel uncomfortable.
The nurse became more anxious. Her feet kept kicking as she tried to crawl back under the cover.
Lin Wan ‘Er adjusted the blanket to cover the nurse’s feet. It helped the nurse calm down. At least she stopped struggling.
Through the blanket, Lin Wan ‘Er patted the nurse’s legs. She comforted her, “You are safe now. We know what you’re scared of. We can help you, but you need to tell us what happened.”
Lin Wan ‘Er’s voice was captivating. The nurse responded to her better than Kui Yi, even though the latter thought they said almost the same thing. The person under the blanket stopped shaking. Then, the head nodded.
It looked like they could still communicate with the nurse. Kui Yi became excited. The nurse was present 18 years ago. With her testimony, things would be clearer. However, as Kui Yi planned to lean forward to ask questions, Lin Wan ‘Er stopped him. Then, she started to move away from the bed.
It dawned on Kui Yi. She must have discovered something… wrong with the nurse. Even though he was confused, he followed her.
When they were more than 3 meters away, the lights in the corridor flickered. Kui Yi saw something shocking from the corner of his eye.
He saw someone hiding underneath the nurse’s bed…
