Chapter 48: Years of Profit
Peace in the shinobi world was a fragile, bleeding thing. But for a merchant, peace was a gold rush.
Over the next two years, the hidden villages withdrew behind their walls to lick their wounds and replenish their decimated ranks. In their absence, civilian commerce exploded across the continent. The roads were safer, the borders were open, and the nobility stopped hoarding their silver for war taxes and started spending it on themselves.
The Uchiha Apothecary did not just participate in the economic boom. It swallowed it whole.
The original three-acre dirt lot outside the Fire Capital expanded to twelve. The single soap kiln turned into a massive, highly coordinated processing facility. Smoke rose from the brick chimneys day and night, carrying the heavy, intoxicating scent of crushed flowers, boiling fats, and refined essential oils across the eastern district.
Ren sat on the shaded balcony of the main facility’s administrative building, looking down at the courtyard.
He was fifteen now. The boyish softness in his face had entirely sharpened into the distinct, striking angles of the Uchiha clan. He was taller, his shoulders broader beneath his charcoal-black formal kimono. The short haori with the subtle fan crest draped effortlessly over him, concealing a physique trained by constant, brutal sparring sessions with Pakura. He no longer looked like a young noble trying to act older than his age; he looked like exactly what he was—the undisputed lord of the capital’s most lucrative trade network.
Down in the courtyard, the Apothecary’s operations were divided into three distinct pillars.
On the left side of the compound, laborers carefully packed delicate glass vials of amber oil and pearl-white moisturizer into velvet-lined cedar boxes. This was the luxury line. It was kept artificially scarce, sold exclusively to Lady Madoka’s inner circle and the highest-ranking nobles of the Water and Earth countries. It cost a fortune, and the aristocracy gladly paid it just to prove they could.
In the center, massive vats churned out the standard line: affordable, heavily scented floral soaps meant for the civilian markets, bathhouses, and lower-tier merchants. It was cheap to produce and sold in staggering volumes.
On the far right, heavily guarded by Pakura’s security teams, was the medical division. These crates contained stark white, un-scented blocks of highly potent antibacterial cleansers and bandages soaked in sterile compounds. This line was sold directly to the hidden villages at a premium. Tsunade had practically mandated the product in Konoha’s hospital, and where the Leaf led in medical doctrine, the other villages eventually followed.
The heavy sliding door behind Ren opened.
Kakuzu ducked his massive frame through the threshold, holding a stack of ledgers. He still wore his heavy indigo court robes, the high collar concealing his stitched jaw.
The missing-nin dropped the books onto the low wooden table next to Ren. He didn’t look angry, which, for Kakuzu, meant he was practically ecstatic.
"The quarterly reports," Kakuzu rumbled, taking a seat on a reinforced cushion. "The Wind Country trade routes are officially secure. We just cleared a forty percent profit margin on the civilian line alone."
"Any pushback from the local magistrates?" Ren asked, pouring a cup of tea.
"None that couldn’t be solved with a quiet donation to their private vaults," Kakuzu replied. He looked down at the courtyard, watching the laborers load a caravan. "I despised it when you ordered the construction of the paved roads and the worker housing."
"I remember," Ren smirked. "You threatened to strangle the foreman."
"I was short-sighted," Kakuzu admitted smoothly. "I calculated the initial drain on our gold reserves. I failed to factor in the compounding returns. Paved roads mean the wagons move twice as fast with zero broken glass. Housed, well-fed workers don’t steal, and they don’t strike. We have eliminated ninety percent of our logistical friction."
Kakuzu picked up the thickest ledger. "The revenue has tripled in six months. I had to hire twelve accountants just to tally the silver coming from the outer provinces. I am running out of physical vault space in the capital."
"Then we buy a bigger vault," Ren said, taking a sip of tea.
He looked at his CFO. Over the past two years, Ren had ruthlessly reinvested almost every ryo they made back into the infrastructure. He hadn’t bought flashy jutsu from the System. He hadn’t purchased legendary weapons. He bought new product formulas. Factory machine blueprints. He bought land, shipping barges, deep-cover informants, and political immunity.
He had built a foundation so deep and so heavily intertwined with the Daimyo’s economy that Danzo Shimura couldn’t touch him without crashing the Fire Country’s gross domestic product.
Pakura appeared on the balcony next, leaping seamlessly up from the courtyard below without using the stairs.
She wore a fresh sand-gold guard kimono, her lacquered bracers polished. At twenty-one, she was a terrifying, lethal presence, seamlessly blending high-court elegance with the raw killing intent of a shinobi veteran.
"The western caravan is loaded," Pakura reported, leaning against the wooden railing. "Three wagons of medical supplies headed for the Grass Country borders. I’m sending twenty men from the route security division. They’re fully briefed."
"Any bandit activity on that route?" Ren asked.
"A few rogue mercenary bands left over from the war," Pakura shrugged. "But our men are wearing the charcoal haoris. The bandits in that sector already know that if they touch a wagon with the Uchiha Apothecary crest, I will personally hunt them down and burn them to ash. They’ll stay clear."
Ren nodded. The deterrent was working perfectly.
"Good. Keep the rotation tight. Dismissed," Ren said.
Pakura nodded and dropped back down to the courtyard. Kakuzu gathered his ledgers, his green eyes gleaming as he prepared to go terrorize the accounting floor over a minor rounding error he had found on page forty-two.
Left alone on the balcony, Ren set his teacup down and closed his eyes, feeling the warm afternoon breeze.
Two years of grinding. Two years of restraint. He had secured his wealth, his safety, and his political leverage. He was untouchable in the light, and lethal in the dark.
It was time to look inward.
Ren opened his eyes and focused his mind, summoning the blue, semi-transparent interface of the System.
For two years, he had completely ignored the shop, using his accumulated points solely for minor stamina recovery items and basic inventory expansions. He had amassed a staggering amount of System points from the sheer volume of his continental sales.
As the interface materialized in his vision, a sharp, distinct chime echoed directly in his mind.
The screen glowed, the text shifting rapidly as a new notification forcibly overlaid his standard menu.
[SYSTEM ALERT]
Threshold Reached: Continental Economic Influence (Tier 3) Achieved.
Age Requirement Met.
[UNLOCKED: TIER 4 - PARTIAL ACCESS]
Category: Biological & Ocular Maintenance now available.
Category: High-Tier Artifacts now visible.
Ren sat up straight, his pulse quickening slightly.
He dismissed the notification and opened the newly unlocked shop tab. For the first time in years, he wasn’t looking at soap recipes or coffee bean cultivars.
The screen populated with items that defied the natural laws of the shinobi world.
He saw the names of legendary artifacts, bloodline modifiers, and items pulled from realities entirely separate from his own. But as his eyes scanned the descriptions, the cold, calculating merchant in his mind immediately recognized the trap.
The system wasn’t handing him godhood. It was offering him a new, terrifyingly expensive ledger.
