Chapter 47: The Peacetime Shift

The smell of boiling lye and crushed jasmine drifted over the eastern walls of the Fire Capital, a constant reminder of the monopoly tightening its grip on the nobility.

Inside the rented estate, business was relentless.

Three weeks had passed since the dirt lot was secured. The stone walls were finished. The kilns were burning hot, and the first shipment of premium vanity creams had been delivered to Lady Madoka’s inner court exactly on schedule. The Daimyo’s wife was thrilled, the rival merchants were terrified, and the gold was flowing into Kakuzu’s ledgers faster than the ink could dry.

But the real power of the capital wasn’t gold. It was information. Nobles traded secrets like currency, and as a favored patron of the inner court, Ren now had a front-row seat to the geopolitical tremors of the continent.

Lord Kazama sat across from Ren in the master study, sipping a cup of imported green tea. The royal envoy looked significantly more relaxed these days, riding the coattails of Ren’s massive success.

"The market is about to shift drastically, Uchiha-san," Kazama said, setting his teacup down. He pulled a folded intelligence dispatch from his robes and slid it across the heavy iron desk. "The front lines are collapsing. The Third Shinobi War is winding down."

Ren picked up the dispatch. "Who broke?"

"The Hidden Stone," Kazama smiled, clearly relieved. "Their main supply line into the Grass Country was obliterated three days ago. A mission led by Minato Namikaze. They call him the Yellow Flash. He destroyed the Kannabi Bridge and cut Iwa’s forces in half. The Tsuchikage is already drafting terms of surrender."

Ren’s eyes scanned the text. The political victory was massive, but his focus locked onto a single, brief casualty report at the bottom of the page.

Team Minato. Mission Status: Complete.

Casualties: Obito Uchiha (KIA - Crushed under rockfall).

Hatake Kakashi (Field Promotion - Sharingan Transplant).

Ren stared at the ink. He didn’t feel grief. He didn’t know Obito personally. What he felt was the massive, invisible gears of the timeline locking into place. The board was officially set.

"A tragic loss for your clan, I see," Kazama noted softly, following Ren’s gaze. "To lose a young talent like that, and for a non-Uchiha to claim the Sharingan... the Konoha military police must be furious."

"War is expensive," Ren replied smoothly, folding the dispatch. "I appreciate the early notice, Kazama. This means raw material routes through the Grass Country will open up soon. We can expand our herbal acquisitions."

Kazama beamed, thrilled that his information was useful, and bowed his way out of the study.

The moment the door clicked shut, the temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Ren didn’t move. He looked out the window at the bustling capital. Obito Uchiha was currently waking up in a subterranean cave, half-crushed, being groomed by an ancient, undead Madara Uchiha to burn the world to the ground.

"Kakuzu. Pakura," Ren called out.

The door opened instantly. Pakura stepped in, wearing her sleek sand-gold guard kimono. Kakuzu ducked through the doorway behind her, his massive frame wrapped in his heavy indigo court robes.

"The Third War is ending," Ren stated, tossing the dispatch onto the center of the desk.

Pakura picked it up, her eyes narrowing as she read the report. "The Leaf won. Suna is going to be furious. Rasa backed the wrong border skirmishes, and now Konoha dictates the peace terms. The Sand’s economy is going to choke."

"Let it choke. That’s Rasa’s problem," Ren said. He looked at his CFO. "Kakuzu, what happens to the market when a war ends?"

"The bounty market plummets," Kakuzu rumbled, his glowing green eyes fixed on the paper in Pakura’s hand. "Villages stop hiring mercenaries and start relying on their own standing armies to rebuild. Bounties on enemy commanders are revoked during peace treaties. It is terrible for business."

"For ninja business, yes," Ren corrected, leaning back in his chair. "But civilian spending is about to explode. Villages are going to rebuild infrastructure. Nobles are going to stop hoarding wartime funds and start spending on luxury, status, and comfort again. The wartime scarcity is over. We are entering an era of extreme consumption."

Ren tapped his finger against his desk.

"I don’t just want the Fire Capital anymore," Ren ordered. "Over the next few years, I want supply lines established into the Wind, Earth, and Water countries. I want our products in every noble court on this continent. While the hidden villages lick their wounds and rebuild their walls, we are going to quietly buy the ground underneath them."

Kakuzu’s eyes narrowed in approval. "Expanding international trade routes requires time. And massive capital."

"We have both," Ren said.

He didn’t need to panic. The Nine-Tails attack, the birth of Sasuke and Naruto, the true breaking point of Konoha—that was years away. He had a massive window of peace to exploit. By the time he returned to Konoha, he wasn’t just going to be a rich kid with a cafe. He was going to be a continental financial titan.

"Pakura, expand your security forces. We are going to need escorts for cross-country caravans," Ren instructed. "Kakuzu, start buying up the cheap, war-torn land near the borders before the Daimyos realize its peacetime value."

Kakuzu nodded, already mentally calculating the real estate margins.

Ren opened his ledger to a fresh page. He had survived the early game. Now, it was time to let the money do the heavy lifting.
