Chapter 46: The Loophole and The Letter
The three-acre plot outside the capital walls was transforming at a terrifying pace.
Driven by the promise of double wages, local laborers had already erected the ten-foot stone perimeter walls and installed the heavy iron gates. Inside the compound, the foundations for the massive soap kilns and pressing vats were drying in the sun.
But Ren wasn’t watching the construction. He was standing near the gates, watching Pakura drill their newly acquired assets.
Kakuzu had gone to the Capital’s labor exchange that morning. He posted a contract for "High-Risk Route Inspectors," offering five times the standard caravan guard wage. Within hours, he had secured fifty battle-hardened survivors: disgraced samurai, unemployed treasury guards, and veteran mercenaries tired of sleeping in the mud.
Now, fifty heavily armed men stood in rigid formation in the dusty courtyard. They all wore matching charcoal-black haoris with the small Uchiha Apothecary fan crest embroidered on the chest.
"You are not samurai anymore!" Pakura barked, pacing the line. Her hands glowed faintly with the terrifying heat of her Scorch Release. "You are not here to fight honorable duels! You are here to keep the wagons moving! If bandits block the road, you do not break formation to chase them! You hold the line, you protect the horses, and you butcher anyone who touches the cargo!"
The men stood perfectly still. They were hardened killers, but they had all seen Pakura turn a training dummy into dry ash on the first day. None of them were going to test her.
Standing next to Ren, Lord Kazama nervously dabbed his sweating forehead with a silk handkerchief.
"Uchiha-san," Kazama stammered, staring at the disciplined ranks of men. "This... this constitutes a private militia. The hidden villages hold a strict, continental monopoly on armed forces. If Konoha or the Sand catches wind that you are raising a private army, they will declare you a military threat and send ANBU to dismantle your operations."
Ren didn’t look away from the drills. His expression was completely flat.
"I am not raising an army, Kazama," Ren said smoothly. "Check the labor registry you filed for me this morning. What is their exact job title?"
Kazama adjusted his spectacles, recalling the paperwork. "’Civilian Logistics Inspector... Route Insurance Agent... Inventory Maintenance.’ Uchiha-san, these are just merchant titles."
"Exactly," Ren nodded. "A private militia is a military target. But civilian logistics workers protecting their own commercial inventory? That falls under the Daimyo’s commerce laws."
Ren turned to the envoy, his dark eyes sharp and calculating.
"If Danzo Shimura or the Hokage attacks a rival mercenary band, it’s village business," Ren explained softly. "But if Konoha shinobi attack fifty registered civilian employees carrying the Daimyo’s wife’s personal goods on a royal highway? That is an unprovoked act of war against the Fire Capital’s economy. The Daimyo would cut Konoha’s funding by nightfall."
Kazama’s eyes went wide. He stared at the thirteen-year-old boy, completely horrified by the absolute, weaponized legality of the trap. Ren wasn’t just hiring guards; he was wrapping them in a legal armor of bureaucracy that Konoha could not pierce without committing political suicide.
Half a mile away, hidden high in the dense canopy of the treeline, a masked Root operative watched the courtyard through a telescopic lens.
The spy noted the charcoal haoris. He watched the men drilling around a wooden cargo cart. He quickly unrolled a small scroll and began writing his report for Danzo.
Target: Uchiha Ren.
Activity: Target has successfully leased land. Target has hired fifty civilian caravan guards to escort merchant wagons.
Assessment: Guards are standard displaced samurai and civilian escorts. No shinobi formations. No chakra signatures. Threat Level: Low. Target is entirely focused on civilian commerce. Recommend suspending Alpha-level assassination protocols.
The spy tied the scroll to a messenger bird and sent it flying toward Konoha, completely failing to understand that he had just watched the birth of the most heavily funded private military company on the continent.
Later that evening, Ren sat in the master study of his rented estate in the inner city.
The heavy iron desk was covered in ledgers, but his attention was pulled away by a sharp tapping on the window glass.
Kakuzu, who had been tallying the day’s brick-laying costs, stood up. He unlatched the window, allowing a large, brown messenger hawk to step onto the sill. The bird wore the official courier crest of the Hidden Leaf Village.
Kakuzu untied the heavy, wax-sealed scroll from the bird’s leg, inspected it for explosive tags or poison traps, and tossed it onto Ren’s desk.
"A dispatch from your home village," Kakuzu rumbled, returning to his ledgers. "I assume they are either demanding taxes or threatening you."
"Neither," Ren said, breaking the wax seal. He recognized the sloppy, aggressive handwriting immediately. "It’s from our beta testers."
Ren unrolled the scroll. It was a letter containing two very different sets of handwriting.
The first half was written in a shaky, uneven script.
Ren,
I don’t know what you did. The medics said my lungs were crushed and my spine was gone. I remember dying in the mud. But I woke up in the hospital, and I was whole. Tsunade has been interrogating me for days, but I didn’t tell her anything about the pill you shoved in my mouth. I don’t understand how you have something like that, but... thank you. I owe you my life, Uchiha. Come back soon so I can pay you back.
- Nawaki
Ren smiled faintly. The Senzu bean had worked perfectly. Nawaki had survived the explosive trap that was supposed to trigger Tsunade’s lifelong trauma.
But the second half of the letter was not nearly as grateful. The margins and the bottom of the scroll were filled with sharp, violently pressed ink strokes that nearly tore through the paper.
BRAT.
Danzo and the Elders Council have been digging into Nawaki’s medical files again. They are still trying to figure out how a kid with crushed organs walked out of my ward without a single scar. I’ve buried the real reports and classified the rest, but they aren’t idiots. Keep your head down in the Capital, and do not do anything that makes them look in your direction. Also, the hospital is entirely out of your medical soap. Jiraiya is returning from the front lines next week and I refuse to let that filthy toad track trench mud into my sterile wards. Send three crates immediately, or I will personally walk to the Capital and break both of your arms.
- Senju Tsunade
Ren read the letter twice, completely unfazed by the threat of violence.
He pulled out a fresh sheet of paper and his ink brush, smoothly writing out a shipping order for three crates of premium medical soap to be sent to the Konoha hospital, free of charge.
Kakuzu glanced over from his desk, his green eyes catching the zero-ryo invoice.
"You are giving away premium inventory for free," Kakuzu noted, his voice laced with deep disapproval. "And you utilized a priceless medical artifact on a Genin weeks ago. The return on investment for saving that boy’s life is highly negative."
"You’re only looking at the short-term numbers, Kakuzu," Ren replied, folding the shipping order.
Ren leaned back in his chair, looking at Tsunade’s angry, demanding handwriting.
"That ’Genin’ is the grandson of the First Hokage," Ren explained softly. "By saving his life, I didn’t just spend a medical item. I bought the loyalty of the single greatest medical ninja in the world. Tsunade is Konoha royalty. Danzo Shimura can send spies to watch our courtyard, but in the light of day, he can’t touch me politically."
Ren locked the letter away in the bottom drawer of his desk, right next to the ornate keys given to him by the noblewomen.
"If the village elders ever try to seize my assets or charge me with treason, Tsunade will tear the Hokage’s office apart with her bare hands to protect me," Ren smiled, his dark eyes completely cold. "Saving lives is expensive, Kakuzu. But the political interest it yields is astronomical."
