Chapter 31: The Cost of a Miracle
The underground ward of Konoha Hospital was completely locked down.
Tsunade walked back into the freezing room. The heavy steel vault door was still lying in pieces on the floor, surrounded by a dozen elite ANBU guards who looked completely lost.
Tsunade ignored them. She walked straight past the shattered door and stopped at the foot of the metal bed.
Standing on the other side of the mattress was Mito Uzumaki. The elderly wife of the First Hokage leaned heavily on her wooden cane. She stared down at the boy who was supposed to be dead hours ago.
On the bed, Nawaki’s eyelids fluttered.
He groaned, a dry, raspy sound escaping his throat. He slowly opened his eyes, squinting against the harsh red emergency lights. He tried to lift his head, but his neck muscles simply refused to fire. He was completely paralyzed by his own weakness.
Mito’s iron-willed expression finally cracked. A single tear rolled down her wrinkled cheek. She reached up, quickly wiped it away with her thumb, and slammed her cane against the floor.
"Clear the floor," Mito ordered the ANBU guards, her voice hard as steel. "Seal this wing. No one enters or leaves without my direct authorization. If a single word of this leaks before I speak to the Hokage, I will execute the entire squad."
The ANBU vanished instantly, leaving only the two women and the boy.
Tsunade stepped up to the bed, her hands glowing with green medical chakra. She didn’t let the emotion distract her. She needed hard data. She placed her hands on Nawaki’s chest and ran a deep, total-body diagnostic.
"His internal organs are flawless," Tsunade muttered, reading the chakra feedback. "His heart, lungs, and liver look brand new. But the rest of him is a wreck."
"Explain," Mito said quietly.
"He’s been frozen in time for thirteen years," Tsunade stated, pulling her hands back. "His muscles are entirely atrophied. His bone density is dangerously low, and his chakra coils have been dormant for so long they are basically sealed shut. He has absolutely zero muscle memory."
Tsunade looked at her grandmother. "He isn’t a shinobi anymore. He can’t even lift a spoon. It’s going to take months of intense physical therapy and a massive, highly specialized caloric intake just to get him to walk down a hallway."
Mito looked down at Nawaki. The boy was already asleep again, his exhausted body shutting down after the massive shock of simply taking a breath.
"He is alive," Mito said firmly. "That is all that matters. You will handle his recovery, Tsunade. The Senju vaults are open. Spare no expense."
Mito turned and walked slowly out of the room to deal with the political fallout waiting upstairs.
Tsunade stood alone in the quiet room. She listened to the steady beep of the heart monitor.
She reached into her gray uniform pocket and pulled out the thick paper contract Ren had forced her to sign an hour ago. She unfolded it and read the exact wording under the harsh hospital lights.
Clause 4: The Uchiha Cafe shall act as the exclusive provider of premium, high-density caloric rehabilitation meals for Nawaki Senju, billed directly to the Senju Clan accounts at a 300% specialized medical markup.
Clause 5: Lady Tsunade Senju agrees to publicly endorse the Uchiha Cafe and its future health products, acting as the official medical sponsor to deter any unauthorized audits, taxes, or bureaucratic interference from village administration.
When she signed it, she was too shocked by Nawaki’s survival to read the fine print. But looking at it now, the trap snapped shut in her mind.
Ren didn’t care about supplying the whole hospital. He cared about the Senju’s endless money, and he cared about her reputation.
He had just secured a blank check to the richest clan in Konoha by providing Nawaki’s daily rehab meals. More importantly, he had weaponized the Senju’s strict code of honor. Tsunade owed him an unpayable life debt. To honor that debt, she was now legally bound to act as his corporate bodyguard. If Danzo or the Hokage’s advisors tried to shut down Ren’s business, they would have to go through a very angry, publicly endorsed Sannin to do it.
Tsunade crumpled the contract in her fist. The kid was a monster.
Suddenly, the heart monitor beside the bed began to beep wildly.
Beep-beep-beep-beep!
Tsunade dropped the contract. On the bed, Nawaki’s eyes snapped wide open.
His pupils were dilated with pure, unadulterated panic. His chest heaved as he desperately tried to suck in air. For thirteen years, the world had moved on. But for Nawaki, no time had passed at all. His brain was still exactly where it was a millisecond before the stasis seal triggered.
"The tag!" Nawaki tried to scream, but his completely atrophied throat only produced a harsh, raspy croak. He thrashed weakly against the mattress, his limbs barely moving. "Orochimaru-sensei! Watch out! The wire—my chest! It blew up!"
"Nawaki!" Tsunade gasped, completely abandoning her clinical composure.
"Where are they?!" Nawaki babbled frantically, his eyes darting around the sterile ceiling, completely disoriented. "Did we win? Am I dead? Why doesn’t it hurt?! Sis, they ambushed us!"
Tsunade didn’t say a word. The tough, legendary Sannin facade entirely shattered.
She lunged forward, dropping to her knees beside the bed. She threw her arms around his frail shoulders and pulled him into a desperate, crushing hug. She buried her face in his neck, her entire body shaking as she finally let out a loud, ugly, uncontrollable sob.
Thirteen years of absolute, soul-crushing grief violently washed out of her. She kissed his forehead, his cheek, his hair, her tears soaking into his hospital gown.
"You’re alive," Tsunade cried, holding him so tight she was almost afraid he would vanish into thin air. "You’re alive. You’re safe."
Nawaki froze, utterly bewildered by the intense reaction. His mind was racing a million miles an hour.
"Sis?" Nawaki mumbled, his raspy voice full of confusion. He tried to weakly pat her back. "Why are you crying so hard? You’re squishing me... And wait, why do you look older? Did I sleep for a whole week? Seriously, stop crying, you’re making me look like a baby!"
Even with a completely ruined body, he was still the same loud-mouthed, hyperactive brat she remembered.
Tsunade pulled back. She wiped the tears off her face, letting out a watery, genuine laugh that echoed through the underground room.
Nawaki squinted at her, then looked past her shoulder at the small metal tray next to his bed. He saw the pristine white porcelain tea cup sitting there, bearing the black Uchiha Cafe logo.
"Why is there a teacup?" Nawaki asked, his brow furrowing. "Did I miss a party? Seriously, Sis, what is going on?"
Tsunade looked at her little brother, then glanced back at the Uchiha cup. She wiped her eyes one last time and offered him a soft, tired smile.
"It’s a long story, kid," Tsunade said gently, brushing the hair out of his eyes. "You might want to brace yourself."
