Chapter 32: The Ghost of Madara
The air in the Hokage’s office was thick with pipe smoke and suffocating tension.
Hiruzen Sarutobi sat behind his massive wooden desk, looking older and more tired than ever. Sitting across from him were his three oldest teammates, the absolute core of Konoha’s leadership: Koharu, Homura, and Danzo.
"I confirmed it with Mito-sama an hour ago," Hiruzen said, his voice flat. "Nawaki Senju is alive. His organs are fully regenerated. He is weak, but he will recover."
Koharu did not look relieved. She looked sick.
Homura took off his glasses, rubbing his eyes as if he could erase the headache forming behind them.
For the last ten years, the Konoha elders had played a very dark, very quiet game. The Senju clan was the founding pillar of the village, possessing vast wealth, endless real estate, and powerful jutsu scrolls. But a village could not be ruled if the founders held all the cards.
So, during the last two ninja wars, the elders had quietly ensured that the Senju were deployed to the deadliest, most high-risk combat zones. It wasn’t murder; it was just a ruthless distribution of military resources. One by one, the mighty Senju died as heroes.
With Mito Uzumaki on her deathbed, Nawaki was the absolute last heir. When he stepped on that explosive tag, the Senju line was effectively wiped out. The elders had already spent the last few months quietly drafting plans to distribute the massive Senju assets and land among their own clans—the Sarutobi, Shimura, Utatane, and Mitokado when Mito announced she will be unplugging Nawaki.
Now, a thirteen-year-old shopkeeper had just walked in and completely ruined a decade of careful political engineering.
"This is a disaster," Homura muttered, slamming his glasses back on his face. "If the Senju heir lives, the asset division is void. But that isn’t even the worst part. Hiruzen, how in the Sage’s name did the boy do it?"
The room went dead quiet. This was the real issue.
"Tsunade is the greatest medical ninja in all five great nations," Koharu said, her voice tight with anxiety. "She spent thirteen years trying to fix that boy and failed. Yet this Uchiha brat flawlessly regenerated missing limbs and crushed organs in a matter of seconds. It breaks every known law of medical ninjutsu."
Danzo leaned forward in his chair. His one visible eye was cold and hard.
"It wasn’t medical ninjutsu," Danzo said darkly. "You know what the Uchiha are capable of. You know what their eyes can do when pushed to the absolute limit."
Homura went completely pale. "You don’t mean..."
"A unique Mangekyō Sharingan ability," Danzo stated, letting the words hang in the air like a death sentence. "An ocular power capable of rewriting physical reality itself."
A deep, primal dread washed over the room.
The Mangekyō. Just hearing the word brought back the sheer terror of Madara Uchiha. They had all grown up in the shadow of that monster. They knew the destruction of the Susanoo. They knew the power that could bend the Nine-Tails to its will.
No one in the village had awakened the Mangekyō since Madara. And the elders had spent their entire lives making sure it stayed that way.
"Have you forgotten Tobirama-sensei’s teachings?" Danzo asked, looking at his former teammates. "He warned us about the Uchiha. Their power comes from the Curse of Hatred. They only awaken their eyes through extreme emotional trauma and the loss of loved ones."
Danzo pointed a scarred finger at the desk. "That is the exact reason Tobiramai-sensei created the Uchiha Police Force. It wasn’t a badge of honor. It was a cage. By giving them police duties inside the village walls, we kept them off the bloody front lines. If they don’t fight in the wars, they don’t watch their comrades die. If they don’t experience trauma, they never awaken the Sharingan. It was a perfect system to suppress their genetic threat."
"But because of this three-front war, we had to deploy the Uchiha garrison," Koharu realized, her voice shaking slightly. "We put them back on the battlefield."
"And now," Danzo said grimly, "we have a thirteen-year-old boy bending reality in the basement of our hospital."
"No. It’s impossible," Hiruzen argued, shaking his head. He refused to believe it. "Ren Uchiha is a civilian. He doesn’t even know how to extract chakra. He spends twelve hours a day in his teahouse counting coins. He has never been in a fight, and he hasn’t lost anyone. Where would he get the extreme trauma required to awaken the Mangekyō?"
"A cover," Danzo shot back instantly. "Do you really think it’s a coincidence that the clan head’s oldest son is suddenly a ’disgraceful merchant’? The Uchiha are plotting. Fugaku could have engineered a fake trauma. They could be training the boy in secret, hiding his chakra signature until they are ready to stage a coup!"
"We have to arrest him," Homura demanded, panic rising in his chest. "We need him in the Interrogation division immediately. We need to check his eyes."
"Don’t be a fool," Hiruzen snapped. "If you send ANBU to drag Fugaku’s son into a torture cell without hard proof, the entire Uchiha clan will revolt by midnight. And worse, Tsunade will back them. The boy just handed her brother back to her. She will tear this tower down if you touch him."
Koharu’s breath hitched as the true political nightmare dawned on her. "A Senju and Uchiha collaboration," she whispered, the color draining completely from her face.
Homura swallowed hard. "If Tsunade publicly aligns the remaining Senju loyalists and their vast wealth with Fugaku’s police force... they would hold absolute leverage over the village. The two founding clans, joining hands against the administration."
"It would be the end of our authority," Danzo said coldly. "We spent decades carefully keeping those two bloodlines isolated and weakened. And this thirteen-year-old boy just bridged the gap with a single medical miracle."
The elders fell into a grim, terrified silence. Hiruzen was right. They were completely trapped. They couldn’t ignore the boy, but they couldn’t attack him openly without sparking a civil war that would destroy Konoha from the inside.
Danzo stood up from his chair. His face was an unreadable mask, but his mind was racing with dark calculations.
"Then we do not use the ANBU," Danzo said quietly. "We watch him. We isolate him. We deny any expansion permits he requests to ensure he stays trapped inside the village walls where I can see him."
Danzo turned toward the door, his cane clicking against the floorboards.
"I will deploy Root," Danzo promised, glancing back at the Hokage. "I will find out exactly what this boy is hiding. And if he truly is the second coming of Madara Uchiha... I will cut his eyes out myself."
