Chapter 28: The Hospital Heist
The front entrance of Konoha Hospital looked like a military fortress bracing for a siege.
Two squads of ANBU Black Ops were stationed on the roof, their porcelain masks glowing faintly in the moonlight. Elite Senju retainers flanked the reinforced glass doors, their hands resting cautiously on the hilts of their swords. The tension in the air was so thick it felt like it could shatter at any moment.
Ren walked steadily toward the entrance, pushing the heavy wooden delivery cart. The wheels rattled loudly against the cobblestones, deliberately breaking the heavy silence.
Instantly, three Senju guards stepped forward, blocking his path. A sensor-nin in the back row formed a hand seal, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the thirteen-year-old boy.
"Halt," the lead guard ordered, his voice tight. "The hospital is under absolute lockdown by order of Mito-sama. No entry."
Ren didn’t flinch. He let go of the cart, wiped his hands on his crisp white apron, and offered a polite, deeply practiced corporate bow.
"Good evening, gentlemen," Ren said, his voice smooth and entirely devoid of fear. "I am aware of the lockdown. However, the lockdown protocol does not freeze the caloric requirements of the night-shift security detail. I have the standard midnight catering order. Forty Shinobi Lunch Boxes. High-protein, triple-caffeine iced tea. Pre-paid by the administrative desk."
The lead guard frowned, looking down at the boy. "You’re Fugaku’s son. The kid who runs the teahouse."
"I am," Ren nodded.
The guards exchanged a look. They had been standing in the freezing cold for six hours, dealing with the crushing emotional weight of their clan’s impending tragedy. They were exhausted, starving, and freezing. And Ren had been delivering these exact midnight meals to the hospital guards for the past eight months. He was a fixture. A completely harmless, highly reliable civilian contractor.
The sensor-nin stepped forward. "I’ve scanned him. He has no metallic weapons. No explosive tags. Just food, a ledger, and a small wooden box in his pocket. Probably breath mints. His chakra coils are completely dormant."
Thank you, Tier 1 Chakra Smoothing, Ren thought, keeping his heart rate perfectly even.
"Check the cart anyway," the captain ordered.
Two guards aggressively searched the cart. They opened the bentos, poked the rice, and checked the tea thermoses for hidden compartments. Finding absolutely nothing but premium catering, they stepped back and nodded.
"Make it fast, kid," the captain sighed, rubbing his tired eyes. "Drop it at the front administrative desk and get out. Do not go near the eastern wing."
"Understood," Ren smiled politely. "Enjoy the meal, gentlemen."
Ren pushed the cart through the heavy glass doors, enveloped by the sterile, clinical smell of the hospital lobby. He moved straight to the central administrative desk. The lobby was empty except for an exhausted medical clerk.
Ren unloaded the bentos, stacking them neatly on the counter.
"Midnight rations," Ren told the clerk. "Careful, the tea is boiling hot."
The clerk nodded gratefully and immediately picked up the internal communication headset, dialing the lower ward. "Captain? The midnight food cart is here. Send two men up to grab the crates before the tea goes cold."
Ren pushed his empty cart toward the front doors, waving politely to the clerk. But the second he rounded the corner out of the clerk’s line of sight, Ren abandoned the cart.
He pressed himself flat against the wall in the dark hallway leading to the restricted S-rank stairwell. He reached into his shirt and pressed a finger against the paper tag taped to his chest.
[ITEM ACTIVE: Basic Sound-Dampening Talisman]
A faint ripple of system-assisted chakra washed over him, instantly muting the sound of his breathing and the rustling of his clothes.
Ten seconds later, the heavy reinforced door at the end of the hall clicked open. Two Senju guards stepped out from the subterranean stairwell, stretching their stiff shoulders as they walked past Ren’s hiding spot, heading toward the lobby for their food.
In their haste for a hot meal, the heavy metal door didn’t fully latch shut behind them.
Ren moved.
Completely silent, he slipped through the crack in the door, plunging into the dim, red-lit stairwell of the S-rank ward.
He descended the concrete steps rapidly. When he reached the bottom landing, he peered around the corner. A single elite guard was standing watch in front of a massive, vault-like door covered in glowing black sealing formulas.
Ren couldn’t fight a Jonin-level Senju retainer. He needed a distraction.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, standard smoke bomb he had bought from a generic ninja tool shop. He crushed it quietly in his hand and tossed it down the opposite corridor.
Pop. Hiss.
A thick cloud of gray smoke billowed out at the far end of the hall. The guard instantly drew his sword, abandoning his post at the vault door to investigate the sudden anomaly.
Ren didn’t hesitate. He dashed silently across the open floor and slipped behind the guard, reaching the vault door.
He gripped the heavy steel handle. He didn’t know how to pick a medical lock, but he didn’t need to. He engaged his secretly purchased Muscle-Density Support. Channeling raw, terrifying physical force into his arms, he twisted the handle. The thick steel locking mechanism groaned and snapped internally with a dull, muffled clunk.
Ren pushed the heavy door open and slipped inside, pulling it shut right as the guard turned back around.
The stasis room was freezing. The walls, floor, and ceiling were completely covered in an intricate web of Uzumaki sealing formulas, all converging on a single steel medical bed in the center.
Ren walked toward the bed. He reached into his pocket, his hand trembling slightly, and pulled out the small wooden box containing the Senzu fragment.
He looked down at the patient.
Up until this exact second, Ren had treated this entire operation like a corporate acquisition. He had run the math and viewed Nawaki Senju strictly as an incredibly valuable bargaining chip.
But when Ren finally saw the First Hokage’s grandson, the cynical businessman routine entirely evaporated.
Ren’s breath hitched in his throat. He took a step back, genuine horror widening his dark eyes.
Nawaki wasn’t just sleeping. He was frozen in the exact millisecond of a violent, agonizing death.
The explosive tag had gutted him. His torso was a shattered ruin of exposed ribs and pulverized organs. His face was locked in a silent, eternal scream of pure agony. The Uzumaki stasis seal wasn’t healing him; it was simply holding the catastrophic trauma suspended in time, refusing to let the boy die.
It was a terrifying, grotesque monument to the sheer brutality of the shinobi world.
Ren stared at the boy. He thought about Tsunade, sitting on the cold steps outside, utterly broken by the knowledge that this shattered shell was all that remained of her little brother.
Thirteen years, Ren thought, his stomach violently turning. She has been staring at this for thirteen years.
The political leverage didn’t matter anymore. The money didn’t matter. The crushing reality of the ninja world had finally pierced Ren’s capitalist armor.
Ren shook his head, snapping out of his shock. His eyes hardened with absolute resolve.
He popped the lid off the wooden box, pinching the glowing green Senzu fragment between his fingers.
He looked at the boy’s chest. A massive, glowing red paper tag was slapped directly over Nawaki’s shattered heart. It was the anchor of the time-freeze.
Ren braced himself. He couldn’t push the bean through the stasis field. He had to drop the barrier. If he was even a fraction of a second too slow, Nawaki would bleed out instantly.
Ren leaned over the bed. He hovered his left hand over the central seal tag, and poised his right hand holding the Senzu fragment directly over Nawaki’s parted lips.
One. Two. Three.
Ren ripped the tag off the boy’s chest.
The stasis matrix violently shattered like glass.
Time crashed back into the room. A thirteen-year-old scream of pure, unadulterated agony ripped from Nawaki’s throat. Hot, dark blood violently erupted from his gutted torso, splashing instantly across Ren’s white apron. The monitor beside the bed flatlined with a piercing, continuous shriek.
Nawaki was dying.
But in that exact, terrifying millisecond, Ren’s hand moved in a blur. He shoved the glowing Senzu fragment directly into Nawaki’s mouth and clamped the boy’s jaw shut.
For a split second, nothing happened. The blood kept pouring.
Then, a blinding, brilliant golden light exploded from Nawaki’s chest, illuminating the entire ward.
