Chapter 20: Hidden Strength

Running a wildly successful, heavily trafficked restaurant in the middle of a war zone had a very steep, hidden cost.

It was 2:30 AM.

The cafe was completely dark, save for a single flickering candle on the desk in the back office. Ren was slumped over his ledger, a brush loosely gripped in his trembling hand.

He was completely, fundamentally exhausted.

His twelve-year-old body was actively rebelling against him. For the past month, he had been working eighteen-hour days. He spent his mornings hauling inventory, his afternoons violently shaking tea mixers until his shoulders popped, and his nights doing complex macro-economic accounting.

He had dark bags under his eyes. His forearms ached with a deep, persistent throbbing, and his civilian muscles felt like they were slowly turning into liquid.

"I can’t keep this up," Ren muttered, his vision blurring as he stared at a column of numbers. He dropped the brush, burying his face in his hands. "If I don’t hire a full-time manager soon, I’m going to die of a heart attack before the Nine-Tails even attacks the village."

Ding!

The sharp, mechanical chime echoed directly in his skull, completely cutting through the heavy fog of sleep deprivation.

The blue holographic screen of the Shinobi Tycoon System materialized, bathing the dark office in a brilliant, ethereal glow. The text scrolled rapidly, bold and beautiful.

[PROFIT THRESHOLD MET.]

[TIER 2 UNLOCKED.]

Ren’s eyes snapped open. He immediately sat up, his exhaustion momentarily forgotten as he pulled the interface closer.

[AVAILABLE (TIER 2): PERSONAL ENHANCEMENTS]

[Sleep-Efficiency Matrix - Cost: 250 BC]Description: Optimizes REM sleep. 3 hours of rest equates to 8 hours of deep recovery.[Basic Chakra Smoothing - Cost: 300 BC]Description: Repairs frayed coils and optimizes baseline chakra flow efficiency.[Minor Stamina Enhancement - Cost: 400 BC]Description: Radically increases physical endurance and lactic acid processing.[Muscle-Density Support - Cost: 500 BC]Description: Condenses muscle fibers, massively increasing physical strength without increasing physical bulk.

Oh, thank god, Ren breathed, a wave of sheer, profound relief washing over him.

The system wasn’t just giving him refrigerators and basic recipes anymore. It was finally offering physical survival tools. They weren’t overpowered combat skills—but they were exactly what a severely overworked tycoon needed to survive the grind.

His current Business Capital balance, aggressively inflated by the cafe expansion and Anko’s unhinged sugar addiction, sat at a very healthy 1,620 BC.

"Purchase all of them," Ren rasped, his voice hoarse.

[1,450 BC DEDUCTED.]

[INTEGRATING ENHANCEMENTS...]

Ren gasped, grabbing the edge of his desk as a sudden, intense heat flared directly in his chest.

It wasn’t painful, but it was overwhelming. The heat rushed through his veins, flooding his exhausted muscles like a wave of pure, concentrated adrenaline. He felt his intentionally frayed chakra coils—the same coils he had damaged to fail his Academy exam—snap back together, smoothing out into perfectly polished channels.

The deep, throbbing aches in his arms vanished instantly. The heavy, suffocating fog of sleep deprivation lifted from his brain, entirely cleared out by the Sleep-Efficiency Matrix. He felt his core tighten, his physical stamina reinforcing itself on a cellular level.

Ren stood up, rolling his shoulders.

He felt incredibly light. He felt dangerous.

He gripped the edge of his heavy oak desk to steady himself and squeezed.

Crack.

The solid wood splintered loudly under his grip.

Ren blinked, looking down at his hand. He pulled his fingers away, staring at the deep, crushed indentation he had just casually squeezed into the solid hardwood.

Whoa, he thought, testing his grip again. He flexed his arm. He didn’t look any different. He was still a scrawny, unassuming twelve-year-old boy. The Muscle-Density Support had compressed his power internally, leaving his physical silhouette completely unchanged.

Ren needed to test this immediately.

He slipped out the back door of the cafe, moving through the shadows of the Uchiha compound. He didn’t go to the elite training grounds where his father and the Jonin practiced. He walked deep into the civilian woods near the edge of the village walls, far away from any patrol routes.

He stood in a small clearing, surrounded by thick oak trees and large river stones.

Ren walked up to a boulder roughly the size of a watermelon. He crouched down, placing his hands on either side of the heavy rock. Before the upgrades, he would have blown a blood vessel trying to lift it.

He lifted it effortlessly. It felt like he was holding a pillow.

Ren tossed the boulder into the air. As it came back down, he pulled his right fist back and punched it directly in the center.

SMASH!

The boulder exploded into a dozen jagged pieces, raining gravel and dust across the clearing.

Ren stood there, his fist extended, completely unharmed. His knuckles weren’t even bruised.

I just bought Chunin-level physical strength without ever doing a single pushup, Ren realized, staring at his hands in absolute awe. I didn’t train for years. I didn’t unlock the Sharingan. I just sold enough iced tea to physically rewrite my own DNA.

A slow, dangerous, highly manic smile spread across his face in the moonlight.

He was officially, entirely off the grid. The Academy had marked him as a failure. The hospital had marked him as a chakra liability. His own father thought he was just a surprisingly competent civilian businessman.

No one in the entire village—not the Hokage, not Danzo, and certainly not the Uchiha elders—knew that the boy pouring their tea could currently punch through a brick wall.

"This is the perfect camouflage," Ren laughed quietly to himself, dusting the gravel off his tunic.

If he showed this strength, he would be drafted immediately. The Hokage would slap a headband on him and send him straight to the meat grinder in the Rain Village.

No thanks, Ren thought, turning back toward the compound. I’ll keep playing the weak, exhausted shopkeeper. Let the prodigies die for honor. I’m going to stay right here and build an empire.

He walked back to his bedroom, crawling into his futon with a massive grin on his face.

So this, Ren thought as his perfectly optimized sleep matrix kicked in, pulling him instantly into a deep, restful slumber, is exactly what profit feels like in the bloodstream.
