Chapter 19: The Cafe Expansion

"Swing harder, Kenji! We’re opening the new wing by noon, and I am not losing the lunch rush to a load-bearing wall!"

CRACK.

A massive cloud of plaster and drywall dust billowed into the air as Kenji drove a heavy sledgehammer right through the partition separating Ren’s teahouse from Goro’s former shop.

Ren stood amidst the rubble, wearing a paper mask over his mouth and holding a clipboard. He coughed, waving the dust away, but his eyes were shining with pure capitalistic joy.

By aggressively acquiring Goro’s deed, Ren had essentially doubled his square footage overnight.

Using the funds from his exploding lunch box sales, he didn’t just clean up the new space; he completely gutted it. They tore out the old, traditional tatami mats and the low, stuffy tables. In their place, Ren installed modern, polished hardwood floors and high wooden tables with comfortable chairs.

He dedicated the entire left side of the new expansion exclusively to his highest-paying, most loyal demographic: the medics.

"Sayuri, how are the VIP cushions coming?" Ren called out over the hammering.

"They’re arranged," Sayuri called back, limping out of the newly dubbed ’Recovery Lounge’ and wiping sweat from her forehead. "Thickest cotton padding we could afford. It’s practically a bed in there."

"Perfect," Ren grinned.

By the time the midday sun hit its peak, the dust was cleared, the Tier 1 Sanitation Seals had magically scrubbed the air clean, and the Uchiha Tycoon’s grand expansion was officially open for business.

The impact was immediate.

For the past month, customers had been forced to take their drinks and bentos to go, awkwardly standing on the dirt road outside. Now, they poured into the massive, airy cafe.

Ren stood behind his newly extended front counter, leaning on his elbows as he took in the beautiful sight of maximum capacity seating.

Over in the VIP Recovery Lounge, four exhausted medical kunoichi were practically melting into the thick, plush cushions. They had kicked off their sandals and were groaning in absolute bliss, completely ignoring the fact that they were in the middle of a public shop.

Ren picked up a tray holding four iced milk teas, heavily loaded with extra tapioca pearls, and smoothly navigated through the crowded tables.

He slid the drinks onto their low table.

"Four iced teas, extra sweet," Ren smiled, dropping his voice into a smooth, incredibly sympathetic tone. He handed a cup directly to a pretty, older medic with tired brown eyes. "Because the hardest-working women in Konoha shouldn’t have to wait for their sugar fix."

The medic took the cup, a deep blush immediately coloring her cheeks. "Oh, my. You really know exactly what to say, don’t you, Ren?"

"I just know how to appreciate true heroes," Ren winked shamelessly, leaning slightly closer so she could catch the full effect of his devastatingly practiced charm. "If the hospital works you this hard tomorrow, skip the line and come straight to the lounge. I’ll have a fresh batch waiting."

The kunoichi giggled, fanning her face as Ren walked away.

I am absolutely playing this perfectly, Ren thought, wiping a stray drop of tea off his tray. When I actually hit puberty in a few years, this VIP list is going to pay unimaginable dividends.

"Hey! Uchiha!"

A loud, incredibly brash voice shattered his internal plotting.

Ren turned around. Standing at the front counter was a young girl, probably a year or two younger than him. She had wild, spiky purple hair, a massive mesh shirt under a tan overcoat, and a look of crazed, manic desperation in her eyes.

Anko Mitarashi.

"I heard a rumor," Anko slammed her hands on the counter, glaring at him. "I heard that the Dango shop on the west side is price-gouging because of the sugar shortage, but you have a secret stash of liquid sugar. Spill it, Uchiha, or I’m tearing up your floorboards."

Ren just smiled. He didn’t argue. He just reached under the counter, scooped a massive, double-sized serving of brown sugar tapioca pearls into a cup, and filled it to the brim with milk tea.

He stabbed a bamboo straw into it and pushed it across the counter.

Anko snatched it suspiciously. She took a sip.

Her purple eyes went entirely blank. The bamboo straw practically fused to her lips as she aggressively inhaled half the cup in a single, terrifying breath, chewing the pearls like a rabid animal.

"Oh my god," Anko gasped, her pupils dilating as the caffeine and pure syrup hit her bloodstream. She slammed a handful of crumpled ryo onto the wood. "I’m never eating solid food again. Give me another one. Put it in a bucket if you have to."

"Pleasure doing business with you," Ren laughed, ringing her up.

By late afternoon, the cafe had naturally evolved into something entirely unprecedented in Konoha’s history.

It became neutral ground.

Because of the war, the village was a tense, paranoid place. The Uchiha compound, in particular, was usually avoided by other clans due to the overbearing, heavily scrutinized presence of the Military Police Force.

But Ren’s cafe sat right on the border, and inside, the clan politics completely dissolved in a sea of boba tea and cheap bentos.

Anko was sitting at a table, loudly arguing with an Inuzuka Genin over who could eat more protein cakes. Three Aburame clan members were quietly sipping tea in the corner, enjoying the chilled air from the Cold Storage Seals. A group of civilian merchants were laughing at the bar, while Itachi dutifully refilled their cups, wearing his tiny apron and analyzing their drinking habits.

Outside on the street, Fugaku Uchiha was conducting a routine patrol route.

The clan head paused, looking through the massive, spotless glass windows of the newly expanded shop.

He watched a scarred veteran from the Senju branch laughing with one of his own Uchiha patrolmen over a steaming lunch box. He watched exhausted medics resting peacefully in the corner. He watched the rigid, militaristic tension of the village completely vanish the moment they crossed the threshold of his son’s cafe.

Elder Tetsu and the other hardliners absolutely hated it. They felt the cafe was a civilian stain on their proud warrior territory.

But Fugaku wasn’t stupid. He was the head of the Police Force. He knew exactly how much the village secretly resented the Uchiha for their heavy-handed policing. He spent his days fighting an uphill battle against clan isolation.

And yet, here was his disgraced, "useless" twelve-year-old son, accidentally doing more for the Uchiha clan’s public relations in a single afternoon than the Military Police had accomplished in a decade.

Fugaku stared at Ren, who was currently laughing at a joke one of the medics made while perfectly balancing a tray of drinks.

The patriarch didn’t walk inside. He didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere with his imposing presence. He simply gave a slow, barely perceptible nod of genuine approval, adjusted his flak jacket, and continued his patrol.

Inside, Ren scooped another handful of coins into his lockbox, entirely unaware of the political miracle he had just performed. He just knew his margins were fantastic.
