Chapter 370: Resonance Factor (Bonus)

Percival let out an exhausted sigh. He wasn’t exactly having the best time. "Well, you’ve already killed everything except the boss."

He looked farther into the cavern. "So... are you planning on finishing it off, or...?"

Ethan shook his head. "No. We can’t kill the boss yet. It anchors this Breach Zone. If it dies, the dimensional gap will begin collapsing."

Percival nodded in understanding.

Hayley, on the other hand, simply walked over to a nearby boulder and sat down.

While Percival continued wandering around the cavern, Ethan made his way toward one of the glowing walls.

Once again, he placed a palm against it and slowly ran his fingers across its surface.

Hayley watched him for a while before finally asking, "You’ve been doing that ever since we came in. What exactly are you checking for?"

Without taking his hand off the wall, Ethan answered, "The walls... or more accurately, the dimensional gap this Breach Zone exists within. I’m trying to determine how stable it is, and whether it’ll actually withstand what I’m about to do."

Hayley leaned forward slightly. "So... you’ve figured out what you want to do then?"

Ethan nodded as he withdrew his hand. "Yeah... I’m planning to reverse the gravitational field throughout this place, then gradually increase the gravity acting on it."

He paused for a moment before adding, "Maybe up to a two hundred times its natural level."

Hayley’s eyes widened. "Two hundred? That’ll crush both Percival and me."

Ethan chuckled. "Not really. You’re Grand Class, so you should be able to withstand it. But that doesn’t really matter anyway. I don’t intend to let either of you be affected."

"I’ll surround each of you with a separate gravity bubble. It’ll isolate your personal gravitational field from the rest of the cavern, so you’ll be able to move around normally while everything outside experiences the increased gravity."

Understanding slowly dawned on Hayley’s face.

Percival, however, seemed less impressed. "Then why exactly did you bring us?" he asked with obvious dissatisfaction.

Still studying the walls, Ethan replied, "Would either of you have let me come into this Breach Zone alone if I’d told you I wanted to?"

Hayley laughed a bit and shook her head, while Percival sighed in defeat. They both knew he was right.

As long as Ethan was at the guild or doing guild stuff that day, Hayley would rather be by his side than anywhere else.

And Percival would’ve hated being relegated to a lower-ranked Breach Zone when there was a much difficult one he could take part in.

Ethan suddenly stopped and turned back to them. "Actually... maybe you two can get busy as well."

His eyes settled on Hayley. "Since you’re Grand Class, once the gravity stabilizes... I want to spar with you."

Hayley was mildly surprised.

"I need to know how much my body can still move under that kind of pressure," Ethan continued. "More importantly, I need to see how well I can keep up against someone at your level."

"That said, we can’t fight seriously. If we do, we’ll bring this place down far too quickly. Thankfully, from what I could sense, the dimensional gap supporting this Breach Zone is exceptionally stable. As long as we don’t kill the boss and neither of us goes all out, it should hold for a long time."

He then turned to Percival. "And as for you, man... you need to get acquainted with using those new skills I granted you. Right now, the only thing you ever use the mark on your arm for is making phone calls."

Percival let out a laugh, amused by Ethan’s comment that the sigil had become nothing more than an arcphone.

Ethan smiled too and continued. "So, to keep you busy, I’ll summon Albedo. You can practice using those skills while sparring with her."

Percival rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Fine. But I’m fighting with my own strength. I won’t need yours."

"Albedo’s already grown to Legendary Class. You won’t be able to do anything against her by yourself," Ethan replied with a sigh. "Besides, why do you keep limiting yourself when you’ve been given access to so much?"

He looked directly at Percival. "Do you realize you could potentially fight this close to Grand Class depending on which skill you ask me to grant? You’re refusing to use everything you’ve been given."

He paused for a moment before adding. "Have you seen how powerful the Hero is? He’s a Blessed too."

Through the sigil on Percival’s arm, Ethan had granted him access to certain borrowed skills as blessings.

As the Spirit King, Ethan could borrow abilities from his summons and, in turn, share a portion of those borrowed powers with those he had blessed.

For Percival, Ethan had specifically chosen abilities that complemented his fighting style as a warrior, most of them focused on enhancing his speed and physical strength.

However, although those skills had been granted to him, Percival still had to consciously draw upon them. Otherwise, they remained dormant and served no purpose.

The moment a Blessed called upon one of those granted abilities, the deity who had bestowed it would immediately become aware.

That was exactly why he hadn’t been using any of them.

Percival still looked reluctant. Ethan merely sighed and turned his attention back to the cavern walls.

Sometimes it was difficult to tell whether it was Percival’s pride, born from having earned everything through his own strength, or simply his stubbornness.

Either way, once Percival made up his mind, there was very little anyone could say to change it.

Hayley spoke up out of curiosity. "Speaking of which... how powerful do you think that Hero is? He doesn’t feel like a normal Reawakened."

Ethan nodded. "Yeah."

After a brief pause, he continued, "I can’t say exactly how powerful he is, but I do know one thing for certain. His Resonance Factor with the gods granting him power is incredibly high."

"Resonance Factor?" Hayley asked, looking confused.

Ethan nodded. "Resonance Factor measures the alignment between a god and their Blessed. The higher that alignment is, the more of a god’s Authority a Blessed can safely draw upon. In simple terms, the higher the Resonance Factor, the stronger the Blessed becomes."

Ethan had learned about it from the System some months ago, when he began granting Percival access to borrowed skills.

Hayley looked almost flabbergasted. "That sounds... difficult to measure. At least against another Grand Class, I know what to expect. But from what you just said about Percival potentially fighting at nearly Grand Class level... are you saying that Hero could also fight at something close to a god’s level depending on his Resonance Factor?"

Ethan looked amused and shook his head. "Calm down. It doesn’t work like that."

"A god’s full power may be impossible to measure—I honestly wouldn’t know. But humans have measurable limits."

"There’s only so much of a god’s Authority a Blessed can safely draw upon before their body can no longer withstand it. Anything beyond that would simply overwhelm them."

He paused briefly before continuing. "Percival’s situation is different, but only because neither my summons nor I are gods. None of us possess any divinity."

"The abilities I grant him all originate from beings that exist within the limits of mortal power. They’re powerful, but they’re still powers humanity can, in theory, attain. So when Percival borrows them, he isn’t stepping beyond the natural limits of a mortal body or drawing upon divine Authority."

Ethan let out a quiet breath. "That said... not being able to accurately gauge the hero’s real limits is exactly why I need this training. He’s in this city because of Demons, I can’t be too careful."

Hayley nodded after listening to Ethan’s explanation.

Ethan looked toward the tunnel leading deeper into the Breach Zone. "I’ll be back. I need to restrain the boss first and place it under the same gravitational protection as you two."

Otherwise, the creature would simply be crushed once the gravity inside the Breach Zone increased.

With that, he disappeared down the tunnel.
