Chapter 376: The Spider Queen’s Ability (1)
Chapter 374
Whooosh—!
Bruce was being lifted into the air by the leg that had him pinned.
He was raised higher and brought closer to Nebula’s eyes.
She glared at him before speaking into his mind with utter disdain.
"Pathetic. You dared lie to me that you couldn’t transform? For what? To surprise me? And at the same time, what did it achieve? Nothing. You will all die here."
"...."
A trail of blood ran down Bruce’s chin as he stared into the eyes glaring deeply at him.
He wasn’t even focusing on the eyes at first.
Instead, his gaze calmly swept across the beast’s entire body from head to toe before finally settling on her eyes once again.
’That enough?’
«Not yet. Go under. Let me check.» Ray commented from inside the mindspace.
He was observing the beast before them through the werewolf’s eyes.
Standing behind the chair, he tensed up.
His hands clutched the backrest tightly while a deep frown settled on his face.
Unhesitatingly, a second leg shot towards the werewolf’s head at breakneck speed while Bruce continued staring ahead with an almost calm expression.
And then...
He smirked.
Right on cue, Kai descended with a gigantic crystal club gripped firmly in both hands.
BAM—!
He smashed it onto the beast’s head with every ounce of strength he possessed.
For an instant...
The world seemed to freeze.
The crystal club exploded into countless shards upon impact.
Several fragments tore across four of Nebula’s eyes, carving deep gashes into them before scattering across the battlefield.
The others failed to notice it amidst the chaos.
But one person did.
The sheer force of the strike was enough to disorient the beast for a brief moment as she hadn’t even sensed Kai’s approach.
It only lasted for half a fraction of a second.
But for Bruce...
That was more than enough.
Grabbing the leg digging into his body, he kicked against it with tremendous force before launching himself backward, sliding free from its crushing grip.
Though she had lost one prey, Nebula angrily whirled around with such speed that her colossal legs cracked the marble flooring apart.
Two enormous legs raced towards Kai.
With Chloe’s telekinetic ability assisting him, the boy shot away in the nick of time.
However, the tip of one leg still scraped across his side, tearing open a deep gash that sent a crimson mist spraying into the air.
Kai landed several metres away from the beast, albeit with a noticeable stagger.
His hand instinctively clutched his bleeding side as pain coursed through his body.
Placing both hands on the ground, Trisha narrowed her eyes in concentration.
Soon enough, six massive spikes of ice burst from the floor, racing across the ground before rocketing towards the Spider Queen’s underbelly.
Since they couldn’t damage the top of its body...
Maybe the underbelly would reveal a weakness.
With nothing more than a casual sweep of one colossal leg, Nebula shattered the ice spikes like brittle glass.
Fragments of ice scattered across the battlefield.
"Damn it! Damn it! This is incredibly hopeless."
Felix could be seen staggering back towards the group.
His sharp eyes swept across the battlefield, assessing everything that had changed during his brief absence.
But to his lack of surprise...
Nothing had changed.
Bruce slid back beside the second werewolf with a slight pant escaping his lips.
He was strong, yes.
But for goodness’ sake...
This was way above his pay grade.
Every exchange with the Spider Queen felt like gambling with his life.
’Haven’t you found what you are looking for?!’
«N-Not yet. Just a little more time.»
Despite the blood flowing steadily from his side, Kai refused to back down.
Determination burned brightly in his eyes.
He and Trisha lunged forward once more, and as though something inside them had ignited, they began bombarding the beast with everything they had.
Crystal pillars erupted.
Ice blades slashed through the air.
Neither attack accomplished much...
Yet neither of them stopped.
They only needed to buy Bruce a little more time.
Ice and crystal spears were being launched with such rapid speed that if any other normal meta-human their age attempted it, they would have destroyed themselves by now.
Attacks rained in from the left and right.
Trisha’s swordsmanship was proving more and more futile the longer they fought.
At some point, her sword slipped from her hands, and the girl abandoned it altogether.
It was useless anyway.
A sword could only cut something if it wasn’t covered in powerful chitin from head to toe.
Instead, her ability came into play.
Ice traps bloomed across the battlefield, while countless icy projectiles shot forward with such cold grace that an ordinary ice user would have been put to shame.
Kai wasn’t left out either.
As though all the time he had spent fighting alongside werewolves had rubbed off on him, he suddenly became far more aggressive.
Unrelenting, crystal clubs, pillars, and spikes erupted one after another with barely a moment’s pause.
The duo weaved around one another like a pair of dancers.
Weeks spent surviving the Forgotten Lands had refined their teamwork far more than six months at the Corps ever had.
And of course, they were being extra, extra careful not to get caught by Nebula’s limbs.
One hit.
One hit was all it would take for them to lose their lives.
They knew that.
Hence, with Chloe’s support, they moved with extreme caution while never giving the Spider Queen a clean opportunity to strike.
At some point, Felix left Bruce’s side and decided to join the fray.
The pressure on the other duo lessened for a brief moment.
Not by much...
But every little bit helped.
Parrying a colossal limb with all his might, Felix immediately pounced forward with a powerful cross jab from the side.
Nebula merely shifted backward slightly.
Even that tiny movement was enough to avoid the werewolf’s punch completely.
Bruce let out a low growl.
His muscles tensed.
Then he exploded forward.
Within a second, he closed the distance between the cohort and the beast.
His claws gleamed obsidian, and with a few swift swings, he unleashed a barrage of claw slashes that tore towards the Spider Queen with blazing momentum.
The werewolf already knew they wouldn’t damage her.
But they would serve as a distraction.
His plan failed horribly.
The Queen casually batted the slashes aside with one leg.
The second immediately rocketed towards the werewolf with terrifying speed.
Bruce snapped his head to the side just in time—
The colossal leg whistled past his face before crashing into the ground with a deafening bang.
An opening.
Landing atop the very leg that had been used as a weapon only a moment earlier, Bruce vaulted forward with terrifying speed.
He closed the distance between himself and the beast’s mandibles in an instant.
Nebula’s mandibles shot towards him with blistering velocity.
However, Bruce kicked against the air behind him and leaped even higher.
Now, he was heading straight for her back.
On noticing this, before Bruce could get any farther, the Spider Queen finally had enough.
TSSHHK!
The sound was so glaringly loud that, for a split second, Bruce instinctively looked down.
His eyes widened.
The mandibles had snapped open.
And from within them...
Several razor-thin strands shot towards the werewolf at frightening speed.
’Wha—?!’
