Chapter 488: Chapter 313: This Time, I’m Crying Tears of Joy (Part 2)

He found himself cornered and interrogated by the two sisters.

Chen Yuan scooted back, his heart pounding. He knew Jiangg Yao wouldn’t actually do anything, but he couldn’t suppress that primal sense of danger.

"That’s it, I swear. I was always planning to tell you about my family. I just wanted it to be a surprise for you both." He forced a fawning smile.

"Really?"

"Of course. Going to work at the company was also because I wanted to do something, to show you my responsibility and commitment as your boyfriend. Otherwise, you’re both working while I’m just sitting around at school... To be honest, I felt really insecure about it."

"Then why didn’t you tell us your family was so rich sooner, Young Master? Do you have any idea how hard I worked to scrape together my little savings? I was so scared we’d struggle financially when we got together. And which ’Jiang’ are you, exactly?"

"Jiang Corporation," Jiangg Ning added.

"Right. You’re the future heir to Jiang Corporation. My sister told me it’s a massive company. I’m always clinging to you and keeping you from work. I’d feel so guilty if I ended up holding you back."

"You don’t have to think that way." Chen Yuan hadn’t expected this was what was on Jiangg Yao’s mind. He still didn’t understand the true source of the sisters’ worries. He shrugged. "No matter who I am, I’m still your boyfriend, right? Nothing’s going to change. My dad’s still young. It’ll be years before it’s my turn to inherit Jiang Corporation. For now, I’m just a regular college student."

"What kind of college student becomes a chairman at nineteen?"

Jiangg Ning sighed after she spoke.

Even with her family’s background, becoming an associate professor at the renowned Lanjing University required pulling some strings, and she still needed the right qualifications.

Chen Yuan, on the other hand, needed no experience whatsoever. Just like that, a priceless investment firm was his. And it had only been a little over two months since he’d decided to start working.

’This world really is crazy.’

On this point alone, the disparity between the Jiangg Family’s status and Chen Yuan’s was immense.

What was truly admirable was that despite his background, Chen Yuan had maintained his pure and harmless nature. He didn’t even have the slightest hint of a spoiled attitude.

Jiangg Ning had met her fair share of heirs from powerful clans and wealthy families. Take her own father, for example. He was in the auction business and came from a well-to-do family. Her mother, Jiangg Ruxue, was the daughter of a fallen noble house. When they married, she faced endless opposition, all because his family looked down on her.

Thankfully, her father was a stubborn man and insisted on marrying her anyway.

’Marrying up is exhausting.’

Chen Yuan was still young, so not many people were scheming around him yet. But Jiangg Ning knew that in less than two years, once he truly entered that circle, it would be a different story. The daughters of entrepreneurs, company directors, and even celebrities would throw themselves at him like moths to a flame.

Shamelessly throwing themselves at him would be considered one of the cruder tactics.

Human desire, a person’s rock bottom—these things were impossible to predict. Who knew what kinds of schemes these women would resort to?

Seducing him while he was drunk, waiting by his door every day to pester him, using every connection they had to get close—she could imagine all of it without even trying.

Besides, to describe Chen Yuan’s personal attributes as merely "excellent" would be a massive understatement.

Once more vested interests become entangled, staying true to oneself would be incredibly difficult.

’When that time comes, how will I protect the man I love?’

In other words, this peaceful, almost dream-like life in Lanjing might soon be a thing of the past.

"That was an accident..." Chen Yuan scratched his head, looking a bit shy. "Let’s not talk about this anymore. Those things are too far in the future. Why don’t we discuss what to have for dinner instead."

He got up from the sofa, wrapping his left arm around Yaoyao’s shoulders and his right around Ningning’s waist. He coaxed them softly, "Hey, I’m starving. I feel like I could eat a horse. Work was killer today, and I forgot to take my cold medicine at lunch."

"Didn’t I put the cold medicine packets in your pocket for you?" Yaoyao pinched Chen Yuan’s side in dissatisfaction.

"I forgot when I changed clothes. It’s still in my pocket..."

"You silly Young Master. I’ll go mix it for you. Drink it right away."

"Mhm."

"I’ll go make dinner then," Ningning said quietly, trying her best to forget the unpleasant thoughts.

Chen Yuan nodded and winked at Jiangg Ning.

His eyes were filled with an unchanging clarity.

It made Jiangg Ning stare for a moment, slightly stunned.

She stood there in a daze, thinking for a long time. Then she lowered her head, the corners of her mouth curling into an unreadable expression, and turned towards the kitchen.

...

Jiangg Yao had a bright yellow SpongeBob mug. The side of the mug was printed with a SpongeBob logo, and the lid was shaped like the distinctive pineapple house from Bikini Bottom, complete with a few leaves sprouting straight up from the top.

She poured hot water into the mug, and the brown granules began to dissolve almost instantly, steam billowing outwards.

She gently swirled the half-full mug of medicine, puckering her lips to blow on the steam. She tossed the torn packet into a nearby trash can, and as she turned...

...she heard very light footsteps from behind.

Chen Yuan had snuck up behind her at some point. He was standing by the door, pulling it mostly closed while glancing back, as if checking the coast was clear.

"Young Master, you—"

"Shh—"

Before she could finish, Chen Yuan gestured for Jiangg Yao to be quiet, a mysterious look on his face.

"What’s wrong?" Though confused, she still lowered her voice to ask.

"Don’t let your sister hear. I have something to tell you."

As he spoke, Chen Yuan walked over, took Jiangg Yao’s hand, and pulled her lightly into his embrace.

Her feet spun in a semicircle on the floor. By the time she looked up, Chen Yuan’s face was inches from hers, and her hand was pressed flat against his chest.
