Chapter 487: Chapter 313: This Time, I’m So Happy I Could Cry
On his way, he took a detour to Master Bao’s pastry shop to buy lava yolk pastries for Jiangg Yao, along with three cups of fruit tea. The last time she’d had the pastries, she’d said they were delicious but a bit rich.
That’s why Chen Yuan decided a cup of lemon tea would be the perfect drink for Yaoyao.
As for Jiangg Ning, she never drank milk tea, so even with fruit tea, Chen Yuan made sure to buy her a low-sugar version.
His arms full of bags, he headed home in high spirits. Plus, with the possibility of Ningning becoming his secretary, Chen Yuan was eagerly anticipating how he would break the news to her.
Besides, he missed his adorable Yaoyao at home.
At 5:40 in the evening, Chen Yuan finally arrived at his front door.
He stood before the door, laden with bags of all sizes.
...
Chen Yuan never used to understand why some people felt so happy just talking about "going home."
He had seen special TV programs that local stations aired during National Day or the Spring Festival travel rush.
During those major holidays, bus stations, train stations, and high-speed rail stations were all jam-packed.
It was like a can of sardines—there wasn’t even room to stand. You could clearly see the anxiety in the travelers’ eyes.
But whenever reporters approached for an interview, the travelers, despite being jostled about in the crowd, would break into a smile after a moment of unease. They’d say that even though the wait was exhausting, they were happy just thinking that once they got on board, they’d be one step closer to home.
Watching those interviews, Chen Yuan would be puzzled. ’What’s so great about going home?’ He had lived at home his whole life but had never felt it was a place that could bring someone such heartfelt happiness.
For him, happiness was going out to play basketball, hanging out with friends, or sneaking off to an internet cafe.
Home was just for eating, sleeping, and studying. Such mundane activities held no real appeal for a child. Like any other kid, he longed for the vast world outside, not to be confined to one tiny place.
Now, standing at the door of a different "home"...
He would knock, and either Jiangg Yao or Jiangg Ning would come pattering over to quickly open the door for him.
He came home every day.
And yet, he suddenly felt so happy...
An irrepressible joy welled up from deep inside him, filling his heart. He felt like a cloud, wanting to expand, to float away.
At thirteen, he couldn’t find the answer to his question.
But now, at nineteen, Chen Yuan had found it with surprising ease.
’It wasn’t the act of coming home that brought happiness. The real source of happiness was the person waiting for you inside.’
The mere thought of seeing her sent a flood of wonderful feelings through him. It was as if there were no more sorrow in the world, only brilliant, radiant light.
All it took was this one, simple motion.
THUMP THUMP THUMP—
Chen Yuan’s hands were too full to knock, so he gently tapped the door a few times with the tip of his shoe.
He then pressed his ear to the door. The soundproofing was good, so he had to strain to listen. After a moment, he heard the patter of hurried footsteps.
"Coming!"
"I’ll get the door!"
Two nearly identical voices called out at once. The door swung open to reveal Jiangg Ning and Jiangg Yao standing side-by-side, both with wide, bright eyes.
One was in pajamas, the other in a sweater.
Yet they had the exact same face.
They seemed to be vying with each other, as if even competing for the first glimpse of him. Their eyes were filled with the eager anticipation of a wife for her husband.
Chen Yuan’s eyes instantly crinkled into a smile. He was experiencing, truly and deeply, what happiness was.
"I bought you some pastries and fruit tea," Chen Yuan said, lifting the bags.
"Are they the lava yolk pastries?" Jiangg Yao was the first to take the bag of pastries, her eyes sparkling with delight.
She had a major sweet tooth, believing sweets brought happiness. But what made her even happier was Chen Yuan thinking of her favorite foods and bringing them home after work whenever he could.
’He was so much better than her sister in this regard.’
Jiangg Ning was so particular, only ever bringing home food she deemed "healthy." Once, when Jiangg Yao didn’t want to go out, she’d craved stinky tofu and begged her sister for half a month to no avail, especially since that particular stall didn’t do takeout.
’Now *this* was a good husband.’
’A husband a hundred times better than her sister.’
’Does her sister have a husband like this?’
Jiangg Yao giggled and blew two kisses toward Chen Yuan. Her rosy lips parted to reveal a flash of pearly white teeth, an incredibly cute sight.
"Hey, don’t run off yet. I got you fruit tea, too. Didn’t you say last time that things were a bit too sweet and cloying?"
"Wow! Young Master, you’re so thoughtful! I was just craving some fruit tea. You’re the best~"
If Jiangg Ning hadn’t been there, Yaoyao would have thrown herself into Chen Yuan’s arms to snuggle for a while, nuzzling against his chest.
At this thought...
Jiangg Yao shot a look at Ningning, huffed softly, and turned on her heel to walk away.
Once she was a good distance away, Chen Yuan watched her go for a moment before conspiratorially pulling out another cup of fruit tea.
"Ningning, this one’s for you," he said. "Thirty percent sugar, so it won’t make you fat."
"Mm-hm," Jiangg Ning said, nodding with a smile as she took the drink. "You’d better come inside, Mr. Chairman..." she teased.
The unexpected title made Chen Yuan flush.
...
"Alright, prisoner Chen Yuan, fess up," Jiangg Yao demanded, her cheeks stuffed full of chewy coconut jelly, making her words muffled. Her puffed-out cheeks made her look like a little hamster. "What else have you been hiding from... CHOMP CHOMP... me and my sister?"
Of course, it would take more than pastries and fruit tea to buy off the two sisters.
Just as Chen Yuan got inside and lay down comfortably on the sofa, the two sisters stood before him. Yaoyao even pressed her knee onto the sofa between his legs, leaning in close. Her narrowed eyes were surprisingly intimidating.
