Chapter 373: Astaroth’s Question
Booom!
A catastrophic shockwave erupted from the golden bull as every muscle across its enormous body bulged. The construct lowered its horns and drove forward with overwhelming force, finally overpowering the miniature sun that had been pressing down upon it. The blazing sphere was knocked violently into the heavens, spinning through the crimson sky like a second sun before disappearing into the distant clouds, leaving behind an endless trail of molten fire that stretched across the Underworld.
Neither Sol nor Leo spared the golden bull another glance. Their attention had already shifted elsewhere.
Behind them, the colossal sun Sol had previously summoned had stopped descending altogether.
It was no longer falling. It was being held aloft.
Kaizer stood beneath the unimaginably massive star with one arm raised high above his head. His enormous palm supported the descending sun as though it weighed nothing at all. Veins bulged across his scaled arm while crimson aura rolled endlessly from his body, yet not even a bead of sweat formed upon his forehead. Behind him, his gigantic crimson dragon avatar surged through the heavens with terrifying speed, its jaws opening wide as it shot directly toward Sol.
For the first time since arriving in Gildreach Vault, surprise appeared upon Sol’s face.
Neither prince had ever crossed blows before today. They had exchanged words, insults and indirect provocations through the centuries, but never had they truly measured themselves against one another. Sol had always believed that even in matters of physical strength, no prince could rival him.
This single moment challenged that belief.
"This is..."
Leo’s golden eyes remained fixed upon Kaizer.
"Impossible."
Even the divine beast could not hide the genuine astonishment in his voice.
Among every prince in the Underworld, Wrath’s greatest glory had always been his overwhelming physique inherited from the ancient draconic bloodline. Tales of dragons shattering mountains with their bare hands and tearing apart Wilds through sheer physical might had existed long before the current generation of Seven Sins. Sol had dismissed those stories as exaggerations.
Now he was witnessing the truth with his own eyes.
"Puny human!"
Kaizer’s thunderous laughter echoed across the heavens.
"You truly know nothing about a dragon’s durability!"
Swoosh!
The moment the words left his mouth, the colossal crimson dragon avatar had already reached Sol’s throne. Its enormous jaws spread wide enough to swallow entire cities as it lunged forward with murderous intent.
BOOOM!
Kaizer’s eyes widened and the entire city froze.
The dragon avatar never reached Sol. Smoke drifted lazily from the back of Sol’s outstretched hand.
Nothing more.
He did not use an elaborate technique or divine authority. He had simply backhanded the enormous dragon across its face.
The impact launched the colossal construct across Gildreach Vault like a discarded toy. It tore through countless towers before crashing into entire districts, reducing magnificent buildings into clouds of rubble while hundreds of unfortunate demons beneath were swept away alongside the collapsing structures.
Silence engulfed the city as countless demons simply stared blankly at Sol’s relaxed figure seated upon his throne, his expression barely changed from moments before.
The dragon avatar had been treated no differently than an annoying insect.
"God have mercy..."
Hagrid muttered under his breath. Terror completely replaced the confidence that had once filled his face.
Even Lazarus stood speechless.
His weary golden eyes remained locked upon Sol while countless thoughts raced through his mind. He had expected Pride to possess terrifying physical strength.
He had not expected this.
"This bastard is bold."
Lazarus slowly exhaled.
His words carried genuine disbelief.
Throughout the Underworld everyone feared Sol’s reputation, but almost nobody believed he would truly challenge two fellow princes inside one of their own domains. Yet that was exactly what he had done.
More than that.
Sol had a thousand ways he could have countered but he chose to openly challenged Kaizer’s greatest point of pride by displaying his own strength before him.
Kaizer slowly lowered the arm supporting the massive sun until the blazing sphere rested comfortably upon his broad shoulder.
His crimson eyes narrowed.
A low growl escaped deep within his throat.
"I’ll be returning this."
He calmly drew one arm backward.
Buzz!
Gasps erupted throughout Gildreach Vault.
Demons watched in complete disbelief as Kaizer prepared to throw the enormous sun itself back toward Sol.
Even Sol raised an eyebrow.
For the very first time in countless centuries, someone stood before him without appearing even slightly overwhelmed. Kaizer did not seem weaker.
He did not seem intimidated. Infact he looked ready.
Just as the dragon prince began shifting his weight to throw the blazing star...
The heavens trembled and a shadow spread across the battlefield.
Every prince present instinctively looked upward.
A massive crimson dragon descended from the clouds with wings stretching beyond the horizon itself. Every beat of those wings sent violent storms racing through the sky. Upon the creature’s enormous head rested an elegant crimson throne carved from ancient stone and black crystal.
Seated upon it was Astaroth.
His crimson hair fluttered gently against the wind while one elbow rested lazily upon the armrest. His jaw leaned against his palm with unmistakable boredom while his opposite hand loosely held the dragon’s reins. A faint smile spread across his lips as he looked between Sol and Kaizer like a spectator who had arrived just before the most entertaining part of a performance.
This confrontation was something he had wanted to witness for a very long time. Unfortunately, Today was not the day.
His arrival instantly silenced the battlefield. Even Kaizer lowered the blazing sun slightly. Sol merely frowned and Leo slowly opened both eyes.
Among every prince and elder throughout the Underworld, only one individual had ever earned Leo’s complete caution.
Astaroth.
"My, oh my."
Astaroth chuckled lightly.
"I do hope I’m not interrupting anything important."
Despite facing two gods and another prince simultaneously, the elder displayed not the slightest trace of fear. He spoke with the ease of someone chatting over afternoon tea.
Kaizer frowned but remained silent.
Even the Sin of Wrath exercised restraint before this man. Sol leaned slightly against his throne.
"What is it?"
His patience had noticeably thinned.
Astaroth smiled pleasantly.
"I understand perfectly why you wish to execute the little fox."
He slowly nodded to himself before continuing.
"However, have you considered something?"
" Would you not be stepping upon the Prince of Lust if you personally avenged the injustice committed against his woman?"
Buzz!
Understanding flashed across Sol’s face. For several long seconds he remained completely silent.
The target had indeed been human. That justified his intervention. But the victim had not simply been any human.
She was Damian’s woman.
Just as Sol himself would never allow another deity to avenge an insult directed toward his own devotee, Damian possessed that same right.
Taking Hagrid’s life now would rob Damian of the revenge that properly belonged to him.
"Tsk."
Leo clicked his tongue.
"That bastard and his devil tongue."
His frown deepened. Leo understood Astaroth far too well. The elder would never appear if he genuinely believed Kaizer and Lazarus could defeat Sol.
He had intervened for one reason only. Sol was moments away from invoking his greatest authority.
The One Authority.
Once that happened, the entire battle would spiral beyond anyone’s control. Astaroth had arrived to prevent exactly that.
His ability to always discover the single argument Sol could not morally reject irritated Leo beyond measure.
Sol slowly turned one final time toward Hagrid.
His cold gaze lingered upon the battered fox demon before shifting toward Kaizer, who still casually supported the blazing sun with one arm.
His frown deepened.
"Very well."
His voice carried unmistakable reluctance.
Behind the throne, spiraling white flames suddenly ignited in empty space. They twisted together into a magnificent gate burning with heavenly fire.
As the gateway stabilized, Sol looked toward Kaizer one final time.
"You will die by my hands. The only thing your little allies have accomplished today is postponing the inevitable."
The throne slowly drifted backward. Leo lazily yawned before closing his eyes once again. Together they disappeared through the burning gate.
The flames folded inward and then vanished completely.
For several long seconds, nobody moved.
Then I he city exploded.
Cheers erupted from every district of Gildreach Vault.
Demons laughed, cried, embraced one another and collapsed onto the streets in relief. Some fell to their knees while others openly thanked Lazarus, Kaizer and every deity they could think of for surviving another day.
Today, the City of Gold had escaped destruction.
