Chapter 374: Power Of Desire
Night descended upon Lebanon, but darkness failed to bring peace.
Smoke drifted above Beirut as entire districts continued burning from the government’s brutal crackdown. Ambulance sirens echoed through abandoned streets while frightened families barricaded themselves inside their homes, listening to distant gunfire that seemed to come from every direction. Hospitals overflowed with the wounded, yet even there soldiers patrolled the hallways, dragging away anyone suspected of participating in the demonstrations. The scent of blood, smoke, and tear gas lingered over the capital like an unbreakable curse.
Far above the clouds, Damian overlooked the nation in complete silence. He remained unaware of the chaos unfolding in Hell for the very same reason he had decided to take extreme action here.
Behind him stood Rah, Loth, Linda and Rin. None of them interrupted him. They could all sense the strange stillness surrounding him. Since Lith’s death, something inside him had quietly shifted. The hesitation that had once lingered behind every difficult decision was gone. What remained was cold purpose.
Damian slowly stretched out one hand toward the nation beneath him.
"The United States is already investigating Karim’s death. Is this still necessary?" Linda asked, but Damian gave no response. He simply continued staring down at the world beneath his feet.
Even now, he understood it would take time before the United States officially became involved militarily.
Time was the one thing he no longer possessed.
"From this moment onward, everyone will fight for their freedom."
Damian’s voice carried neither anger nor disappointment. His eyes erupted with a violent purple glow as he began draining away the people’s desire to simply survive while amplifying their desire to reclaim their nation from the Blood Dunes that had terrorized them for generations. Once violence erupted and the government inevitably turned its guns upon its own citizens, the United States would finally possess every justification it needed to intervene.
Even supporters of the Blood Dunes were swept into the tide. As long as the smallest fragment of dissatisfaction toward the organization existed within someone’s heart, Damian magnified it while stripping away whatever desire remained to see the Blood Dunes succeed.
"Everyone will choose to resist this evil... and I will give them victory."
His fingers slowly closed.
Rin found no fault in the decision. If anything, he considered it the fastest and most effective method Damian could use to reclaim this planet while eradicating his brother’s remaining influence.
"I agree."
Rin spoke after landing gently upon Damian’s shoulder.
Damian barely acknowledged him.
"If fear keeps them enslaved... then fear no longer deserves to exist."
He snarled those words.
Buzz!
A pink radiance spread across the heavens like an invisible tide.
"[Desire Bandit.]"
No one saw or heard it. Yet every living soul throughout Lebanon felt something change deep within their hearts.
For generations, fear had ruled the nation more completely than any government ever could. Fathers feared speaking honestly before their children. Journalists feared asking difficult questions. Soldiers feared refusing unlawful orders. Judges feared justice itself. Entire generations had been taught that survival belonged only to those who lowered their heads and remained silent.
That fear simply vanished.
At the very same moment, another emotion flooded the empty space it left behind. An overwhelming desire to reclaim their homeland, protect the people they loved from suffering Karim’s fate and ensure Karim Haddad had not died in vain.
Across Beirut, a university student who had hidden beneath his bed after escaping the massacre suddenly stood up. His trembling hands became perfectly steady. His eyes drifted toward the bloodstained shirt he had worn during the protest before he quietly picked it up once again.
In Tripoli, an elderly father whose son had disappeared two years earlier slowly opened the drawer containing every unanswered police report he had collected. He stared at them in silence for several long moments before carefully placing them beneath his arm and walking toward the front door.
In Sidon, nurses who had spent the previous night treating wounded protesters without rest silently removed their bloodstained gloves before walking outside together.
Mechanics abandoned their garages. Dockworkers left the ports. Teachers walked out of classrooms. Imams paused their sermons. Priests stepped out of churches. Lawyers closed their offices. Even soldiers stationed throughout the country found themselves staring at their rifles while unfamiliar thoughts passed through their minds.
For years they had convinced themselves they were merely following orders.
Tonight...
That excuse no longer comforted them.
Within hours the streets filled once again. Only this time everything had changed.
There was no hesitation.
People poured out in overwhelming numbers, filling the streets of every major city.
Beirut.
Tripoli.
Sidon.
Tyre.
Zahle.
Nabatieh.
Entire highways disappeared beneath endless rivers of ordinary people marching toward government buildings and military checkpoints. They carried Lebanese flags, photographs of the disappeared and portraits of Karim Haddad raised proudly above their heads. Many marched in complete silence while others sang forgotten patriotic songs their grandparents had once taught them.
Their faces no longer carried fear, only resolve.
The Blood Dunes immediately realized something had gone terribly wrong. Observation posts reported crowds unlike anything previously recorded.
Military officers stared at surveillance feeds showing civilians calmly advancing despite armored vehicles blocking every road. Warning shots achieved nothing. People walked through clouds of tear gas as though they were nothing more than perfume drifting through the air.
They simply kept walking.
Commanders who had spent years suppressing unrest suddenly found themselves confronting something they had never been trained to face.
A population that no longer feared death.
Inside government compounds, panic spread with astonishing speed.
"What happened to them?"
"Why aren’t they running?"
"Why are they still advancing?"
Reports flooded command centers faster than officers could process them. Before long, police stations found themselves surrounded. Military checkpoints became isolated and several local officers quietly abandoned their uniforms before disappearing into the crowds.
Others refused orders outright.
The chain of command that had once seemed absolute began cracking city after city. Watching from above, Linda felt a chill run down her spine.
She had spent months alongside the Order of Moses trying to ignite resistance against the Blood Dunes.
Everything they had accomplished combined did not even come remotely close to what Damian had achieved in a matter of minutes.
She could barely recognize the nation below.
"Karim... are you watching?"
Damian’s voice was barely above a whisper.
"They’re finally becoming the country you always believed they could be."
Damian said nothing for several long moments.
A faint trace of guilt flickered across his heart before disappearing once again. His expression remained unreadable as he silently watched the endless sea of humanity flooding through the streets below.
