Chapter 62: Chimera Evolution

Non hunting type spiders lost a considerable amount of combat effectiveness once separated from their webs.

Otherwise, there was no way he could have defeated it alone.

Not to mention, if the monster he had encountered had not been a spider but the orange cat creature from earlier instead, the entire situation would probably have been reversed.

A cat’s hunting skills and reaction speed were several times greater than those of a spider monster.

He doubted he could have hit it even if it had been right in front of his face.

Thinking back to the underdeveloped Chimera Zombie that had only rewarded him with six experience points and three copper coins, Joo Joowon could not help sighing at the enormous difference in attributes and loot between the two monsters.

Despite only being separated by two levels, the gap between them was as wide as a canyon.

After all, the orange cat Chimera had remained trapped inside a house, while the Spider Chimera had already devoured quite a few people.

In every aspect, the difference between them was huge.

The appearance of these two Chimera monsters also caused Joo Joowon to become worried about just how frequently Chimera creatures might appear.

He did not know whether every Chimera possessed the potential to evolve into a Boss.

If they did, then the implications were terrifying.

The apartment building only had eighteen floors, yet two Chimera monsters had already appeared.

There was even the possibility of a third one still existing somewhere.

Not to mention the first floor had private courtyards attached to some units.

Nobody knew how many small animals might be hiding there.

No matter how he looked at it, that kind of location seemed perfect for spawning a Boss monster.

If there was another Chimera down there as well, then that would make three of them.

That level of density was truly horrifying.

The apartment complex only had four buildings and all of them were the same height.

If the Bosses appearing inside each building were roughly similar, then even under the most optimistic estimate, the four buildings together could contain as many as eight Chimera monsters.

And after excluding all the residents who had already turned into zombies, how many of the remaining survivors would actually have the strength to fight against a Chimera?

This frightening thought weighed heavily on Joo Joowon’s mind, though it also felt somewhat unreasonable.

Perhaps the people in his building had simply been unlucky.

There was also another possibility.

Perhaps Boss monsters were not distributed according to territory, but according to population density.

There was even a chance that player levels were somehow related to their appearance.

While continuing to practice parkour along the walls, Joo Joowon kept analyzing the situation, trying to discover some kind of pattern behind it.

In the end, Joo Joowon felt that even if many Chimera monsters appeared within the same location, perhaps only one of them would ultimately be able to become a Boss.

The others might be driven away, or perhaps they would become elite monsters that served as ’gatekeeper Bosses.’

Although they were all Chimera monsters, differences in species naturally meant differences in the improvements they received.

Joo Joowon had observed that although zombies would not actively attack their own kind, they also showed no desire to cooperate with one another.

Even if they did cooperate temporarily, that did not mean their relationship would be harmonious.

For example, those zombie birds that had previously moved under the leadership of a stronger individual traveled in groups, yet they still fought among themselves whenever food was involved.

As the saying went, one mountain cannot contain two tigers.

If they were all Chimera monsters with the potential to become Bosses, there was no reason they would coexist peacefully.

More importantly, nowhere did the rules state that only players could obtain the Zombie Core dropped by Chimera zombies.

In a sense, Zombie Core might really be equivalent to monster cores.

The game had simply skipped the dissection process for players.

Players feared the violent energy contained within Zombie Core, but zombies did not fear such things at all.

If their bodies were damaged, then so be it.

As long as their brains remained intact, they simply did not care about physical injuries.

After all, they were creatures incapable of feeling pain.

If his thoughts continued along this line of reasoning, then the possibilities became enormous.

For example, could players potentially profit while two Chimera monsters fought each other like the snipe and clam in the old fable?

Or perhaps they could take advantage of hostility between two Chimera monsters and find an opportunity to deliver a single fatal blow.

After thinking about it for only a moment, all sorts of underhanded ideas immediately began popping into Joo Joowon’s mind.

He forcefully suppressed those thoughts and took out the green Zombie Core, breaking off a small piece and feeding it to Byeol.

From yesterday until now, Byeol had shown no abnormal reactions after eating the Zombie Core.

Even its appetite remained exactly the same as usual.

This proved that Joo Joowon’s somewhat crude feeding method was likely workable.

Even if Byeol ultimately gained no special powers from it, at the very least it probably would not kill him.

Since that was the case, Joo Joowon simply treated it as giving Byeol some extra nutrition.

After all, after killing two Chimera Zombies, he had already realized that this item was most likely a guaranteed drop.

Perhaps it would become an extremely versatile resource in the future.

There was even a chance that under circumstances where game currency became scarce, Zombie Core might temporarily serve as an alternative form of currency.

Since it was not some incredibly precious item, wasting one Zombie Core was not really a big deal.

Joo Joowon was already an experienced expert when it came to forcing medicine down unwilling patients.

This time he did not even bother trying to trick Byeol.

He directly shoved the Zombie Core into the cat’s mouth as if administering medicine, refusing to give him any chance to spit it back out.
