Chapter 63: The Second Boss Kill
"Meow! Meowowowow! Mrowwww!"
The furious barrage of cat noises poured endlessly out of Byeol’s mouth like machine gun fire.
Watching Byeol frantically scratching the scratching post while obviously cursing him out nonstop, Joo Joowon could only tilt his head upward and whistle innocently as if none of it had anything to do with him.
Judging from Byeol’s intense emotional reaction, even someone who had no idea what was happening could probably tell the little guy was saying some extremely unpleasant things.
Most people would probably feel guilty.
Unfortunately for Byeol, Joo Joowon was not most people.
Compared to what he had endured before, this level of verbal abuse barely registered at all.
Back when he took Byeol to the veterinary hospital to get neutered, he had been cursed out for an entire month straight.
Compared to that experience, today’s complaints were practically nothing.
With that thought in mind, Joo Joowon resumed his parkour training.
He attempted to use the Spider Web Launcher to swing directly from his bedroom all the way to the entrance hallway.
Unfortunately, every attempt ended in failure.
[ Ding! ]
[ World Announcement: Congratulations to player HighlyCultured for becoming the second player in the world to defeat a Lord Rank Boss. This announcement is hereby broadcast. Player HighlyCultured has been awarded the title: Breaker of Endless Tides. ]
Joo Joowon froze for a moment.
He was not surprised that another player had managed to kill a Boss on the third day of the apocalypse.
After all, with so many people in the world, there would always be individuals capable of accomplishing things that others would never even dare imagine.
What surprised him was the identity of the player.
Joo Joowon knew this person.
It was the very same player who had sold him the compound crossbow on the first day the trading market opened.
The most important detail was that only one player’s name appeared in the announcement.
Did that mean the other person, just like Joo Joowon himself, had also defeated the Boss alone?
Joo Joowon had relied on Molotov cocktails and fire to secure his victory.
But what about the other player?
Quietly committing the name to memory, Joo Joowon quickly shifted his attention toward the title itself.
"Breaker of Endless Tides."
Unfortunately, based on those words alone, he had no way of guessing what effects the title actually provided.
In addition, Joo Joowon noticed that the world announcement contained no mention of Reputation rewards.
If that was the case, then Reputation was probably an extremely difficult resource to obtain.
Although he still could not see any immediate use for Reputation, the discovery still made him feel considerably happier.
After all, nobody ever complained about possessing too many valuable things.
...
Somewhere inside a private hunting ground.
"So it happened earlier than expected."
HighlyCultured looked at the dead Boss and unconsciously pressed his lips together.
A Lord Rank Boss required time to grow.
HighlyCultured had spent considerable effort driving another Chimera toward the area so that the easiest Chimera to deal with could evolve into a Lord Rank Boss.
Because he had to avoid coming into contact with the rainwater, his movements had already been heavily restricted.
Even luring the Chimera into position required additional time.
That was why he ended up half a step behind the other person.
Originally, there had been nothing wrong with this strategy.
At least according to his memories, Ashfall had achieved the world’s first Boss kill on the fifth day of the apocalypse .
"Butteryfly effect?"
He quietly muttered the words to himself.
Before becoming Lord Rank Bosses, Chimera creatures generally remained in a state where kings avoided other kings.
Only when one was close to evolution or had no other choice would it approach another Chimera.
HighlyCultured had made numerous preparations for this plan.
He had believed he would secure the world’s first kill without issue.
Unexpectedly, he still failed in the end.
The result left him momentarily distracted.
It would be a lie to say he felt no regret.
He simply had not expected that such a small change would allow the other person to rise even faster than in the previous timeline.
But what was done was done.
As he bending down to collect the loot drops, HighlyCultured’s expression quickly returned to calm.
Although he had failed to claim the first kill reward, there was nothing more worth saying about it.
After all, in his previous life, Ashfall’s guides had helped him greatly as well.
Talking about repaying kindness in the apocalypse was unnecessary.
That would be absurd.
He had merely provided Ashfall with a small amount of assistance.
He did not believe it was anything particularly significant.
In the end, even if he had never appeared, Ashfall would still have risen to prominence eventually.
After all, he was hardly the only person selling weapons.
Unfortunately, he had reborn too late.
The apocalypse game had descended before he had enough time to prepare anything properly.
Even after losing the first kill reward, he still possessed the advantage of foresight.
Because of that, he firmly believed there was no possibility that he would fall behind anyone else.
Although HighlyCultured did not dislike Ashfall and even held a certain degree of goodwill toward him, he had no intention of becoming his friend or companion.
He was not a lone wolf.
Sooner or later, he would establish a team to support himself, so he would never willingly approach Ashfall.
This was not a matter of who would lead and who would follow.
It was a question of whether his own fate was sturdy enough to survive it.
HighlyCultured still vividly remembered the shock that swept through the player community in his previous life when Ashfall, exhausted from being recruited, pressured, and attacked by countless factions, finally revealed the fate trait known as [ Harbinger of Endless Misfortune ].
After that day, no faction ever tried recruiting him again.
Even organizations that had once stood against him could not help but treat him with extreme politeness.
There was no helping it.
Luck might appear intangible and impossible to grasp, but everyone knew it undeniably existed.
