Chapter 53: Escape from Floor Twelve
Combined with the silk threads Joo Joowon had previously observed through Mind’s Eye, there was no doubt that this zombie had fused the characteristics of both a human and a spider into one horrifying creature.
Joo Joowon immediately recalled the Level 3 Chimera Zombie he killed earlier.
Although it did not provide much experience, its vitality had been unbelievably tenacious.
Its health was far greater than ordinary monsters.
Even direct shots to the brain had failed to kill it immediately.
Unlike hunting spiders, web weaving spiders usually waited patiently for prey to walk directly into their traps before binding and digesting them inside their webs.
While retreating backward, Joo Joowon fired a crossbow bolt without hesitation.
The process of locking on, aiming, and shooting was completed almost instantly.
Hitting moving targets was still somewhat difficult for Joo Joowon.
Fortunately, his aim was not terrible either.
The spider zombie’s attack was briefly interrupted by the shot.
Taking advantage of that opening, Joo Joowon rapidly reloaded while increasing the distance between them and calmly sprinted upstairs.
No matter what, he absolutely could not allow the spider zombie to fight on its home ground.
That would be no different from voluntarily walking into its trap.
Running upward was also a decision Joo Joowon arrived at after careful consideration.
After thinking about it slightly, the reasoning became obvious.
With the spider zombie blocking the twelfth floor, the floors above were most likely almost completely devoid of survivors already.
That also meant he probably would not encounter too many unexpected complications there.
After all, anyone clearing monsters would naturally do so floor by floor.
Players living on the upper floors would not simply skip the twelfth floor entirely and continue upward.
Unlike Joo Joowon, they did not possess Mind’s Eye.
However, for ordinary people, entering the twelfth floor was essentially guaranteed death.
Because of that, it was easy to imagine that the danger above would actually be relatively lower.
After all, one mountain could not contain two tigers.
No matter what, there could not possibly be another Lord Rank Boss waiting upstairs as well.
Of course, Joo Joowon did not completely rule out the possibility either.
The building had eighteen floors in total.
And this was still only the third day since the apocalypse began.
There would always be people choosing to remain hidden inside their homes waiting for military rescue rather than risking their lives fighting monsters outside.
Perhaps some people had truly survived precisely because of that passive approach.
However, regardless of the situation, Joo Joowon still intended to lure the spider zombie upward.
He had no desire to drag innocent people into danger.
Besides, running upward also made it easier for him to land accurate shots on the target.
Even throwing the Molotov from above would make it much easier to hit accurately from a higher position.
Moreover, climbing upward was naturally more difficult than descending downward.
And that disadvantage applied equally to both him and the spider zombie.
"Roar!"
The spider zombie quickly chased after him.
The attack power of the crossbow bolts clearly was not enough for the creature to take seriously.
Joo Joowon raised the already reloaded compound crossbow and aimed carefully.
Whoosh!
The bolt struck directly in the center.
It pierced through the spider zombie’s fangs.
This time, the spider zombie could not even roar anymore.
It could only attempt to intimidate Joo Joowon with its gaze.
Unlike ordinary zombies with pale gray eyes, the spider zombie’s eyes glowed with a bloodthirsty crimson color filled with violent emotions.
It did not seem to care at all about moving away from its nest.
That differed slightly from Joo Joowon’s expectations.
A Lord Rank Boss normally should not leave its territory so easily.
However, perhaps in the creature’s eyes, the entire building already counted as its nest.
Or perhaps Joo Joowon’s strength simply was not enough to make it feel cautious.
Because of that, the moment it chased after him, it did not hesitate even slightly.
Its speed was also extremely fast.
Many spiders were naturally known for their speed.
Quite often, the moment people spotted them, they would instantly dart away and disappear.
However, perhaps because of its oversized body, the spider zombie was not quite as fast as expected.
That might also be because six legged movement was not especially suited for climbing staircases.
If they were fighting on flat ground instead, its speed might become even more terrifying.
By the time Joo Joowon fired another freshly loaded bolt, he had already reached the midpoint between the twelfth and thirteenth floors.
Unfortunately, this shot failed to hit its target.
After being struck twice in a row, the spider zombie had clearly learned its lesson.
It realized Joo Joowon was not one of those helpless humans that could be crushed effortlessly.
This time, instead of tanking the attack directly, it tilted its head sideways and dodged the incoming bolt before charging forward at an even faster speed.
In that split second, Joo Joowon immediately drew the fire axe hanging at his waist and swung it downward toward the spider zombie with the added force of gravity behind the strike.
Whenever it came to equipment capable of improving his combat strength, Joo Joowon always carried everything possible with him.
Even after obtaining the compound crossbow, he never discarded the fire axe.
Instead, he found ways to carry all of it without affecting his movements.
That way, even if he somehow lost the weapon in his hand during battle, he would still have backup weapons available.
The fire axe targeted the spider zombie’s spine from an extremely tricky angle.
Unlike dodging crossbow bolts, avoiding this attack was far more difficult.
Sensing danger instinctively, the spider zombie immediately raised one of its arms to block the strike.
However, the fire axe was originally designed as a breaching tool.
Its material was naturally extremely sturdy.
Combined with the additional force of gravity, the strike instantly smashed the spider zombie’s arm inward with terrifying force.
The entire arm visibly caved inward.
