Chapter 139: BURST TIRES
At a rooftop garden in New York, Monica had just completed signing a contract with a fashion brand, agreeing to become their global ambassador.
"Thanks so much for your cooperation, Ms. Smith," one of the brands’ co-founders uttered as she stretched her hand for a handshake and she wore a friendly smile on her face.
Monica returned the smile as she shook the co-founder’s hands and replied, "It’s my pleasure, Mrs. Kent. I am looking forward to working with you".
Once they said their byes in the European style of kissing each other on the cheek, the co-founder and his team left the rooftop. Immediately, Monica reached down to her legs and quickly took off her heels before releasing a sigh afterward, as if a heavy burden had been removed from her shoulder. She leaned her back on the soft cushioned chair she was sitting on and closed her eyes to relax them before opening them a second later.
Releasing another sigh, she raised her fancy wristwatch to her face and checked the time.
"It’s late already?" she mumbled under her breath as a groan escaped from her lips.
’DING’
A message notification came in through her phone and she searched for it in her purse. She read through the text and felt even more tired than before.
"When will he stop troubling me?" she muttered after reading through the message that had to be sent to her from Jake. Without replying to the text, she kept her phone aside and searched for the sandals that she would be wearing home. After that, she threw her phone in and grabbed her heels before heading towards the elevator.
At the lobby of the hotel, Monica got out of the elevator and walked towards the exit. Since it was already late at night, she had instructed her manager to head home so she was the one to drive herself home tonight.
Getting inside her car, she ignited the engine and drove off. The city lights had already been turned on, making the streets seem as if it was still daytime. People passed, cars drove and the cool breeze made her locks dance in her air.
Suddenly her phone rang, she reached for it and picked up the call.
"Hey babe."
From the tone of the voice, she already knew who was calling her.
"Hey," she replied casually, her voice mixed with a tinge of sweetness
"How did the meeting go?" Felix asked her.
"Oh, it went well. I’m on my way home right now", she informed him.
"Ah, I see. Are you heading to your apartment or the smith’s mansion?" he asked her of her destination. Monica had just recently bought an apartment for herself due to some cases where she would have to go home late.
"I think, I will just head over to my apartment. Do you want to come over?" she offered.
Instantly, Felix replied, "I will be there."
In the middle of their chat, Monica didn’t notice the piles of nails that had been placed on the road. In a second, her tires burst with a loud sound, slowing down the movement of the car.
Abruptly, Felix stood up from the office chair he was sitting on and asked with a worried tone, "What was that? Are you okay?"
"Yes, I’m fine", Monica replied as she slowly stirred the wheels of the car to part at the corner of the street. "I think my tires just burst", she said. She got out of the car and watched as light steam emitted from the open tires.
"What? How did that happen? Wait, where are you?" Felix asked several questions in one go, making Monica roll her eyes at his overreaction.
"I’m not sure about my location..." Monica drawled as she searched for a name post until she found one. "Ooh, am at Enchanted Grove Way", she said.
"Enchanted grove way, that’s far from here," Felix mumbled under his breath. "Wait there, am coming right now," he quickly said and started searching for his car keys.
"Will you relax? I will just look for a cab and take a ride home instead," she suggested but when she stared at the empty street in front of her, realization dawned on her.
"Cab, by this time? Don’t you know the hour that’s ticking?" he questioned her as he opened the door to his office and left from there. "Just wait for me and don’t go anywhere," with that, he hung up on the phone without giving her the chance to suggest anything.
On the other side, Monica released a frustrated sigh as she stared at her phone which would soon run out of battery.
"He never listens and I guess I will be the one to listen to him this time," she grumbled.
A car passed and the urge to ask for a ride hit her but she decided to be an obedient girlfriend, besides, she didn’t know who those people were.
She got back inside the car and turned some music on as she waited for her boyfriend to come pick her up. Sadly, the Walters corporation was at least a 45-minute ride to reach her location.
Suddenly, she heard the knock on the glass window that she had rolled up earlier, making her jolt.
Thinking it was Felix, she quickly rolled down the window, only to find the person she had least expected to see that night.
"Jake?" she mumbled and the latter revealed a flirty smile, exposing his perfect pearly white set of teeth.
"What are you doing in this area, hmm? Waiting for someone?" he questioned her.
Stuttering, she managed to reply, "A-actually, my tire just burst".
"Hmm," he hummed in response as his eyes scanned the tires before he raised them up to stare at her. "Why don’t I give you a ride home? I’m sure you must be tired and need to rest", he suggested but Monica shook her head,
"Thanks, but Felix is coming to pick me up".
