Chapter 282: Ch 282: The First Episode
[Task 14 will start soon. Please be ready to face a massive threat against humanity.]
Rin looked at the system with a detached expression as his vision kept going in and out of focus. A few days had passed since his System Evolution Triggered, and things had been relatively calm for the human race.
But for Rin, every second felt precious. His sanity was slipping away faster.
The blank periods in his memory were getting larger and larger, and he was starting to feel detached from this world.
It was beginning to feel like this body was no longer his own, and foreign knowledge was dominating his mind.
Even now, he felt like he knew everything about Task 14 without ever having seen the mission screen.
It was another monster wave, but this time it was going to be more intense. A lot of people would die as a result.
But Rin’s instincts told him that he did not have to worry about it. People died all the time, so there was no need for him to plan or help them.
Instead, he should feed them to the swarm the system was going to unleash and increase his power.
"Don’t be ridiculous. I am not heartless enough to abandon the people under my command. I would never allow them to die a meaningless death."
Rin muttered while clutching his head. He refused to follow the instructions that kept popping up in his mind, which only made his headache worse.
He could feel the force threatening to overtake his senses and make him do what it wanted. But Rin pushed back, refusing to allow that power to take control of him.
It was a futile struggle, and Rin knew he was going to lose in the end.
But he still kept pushing and pushing until he could no longer do it mentally.
He felt exhausted and was not in the mood to deal with other people. But being the leader of a settlement meant that he had to push past his discomfort and face his people.
They were already gathered outside his office when Collin knocked on the door before entering.
"Young Master, the others are waiting for you to call the meeting. Should I gather them all right now?"
He asked, but then he noticed how exhausted Rin looked.
Collin’s expression changed instantly, and so did his tone.
"I suddenly have a feeling that we can handle this next task on our own. You should stay back and rest for a while."
Collin turned around to leave, and Rin let out a sigh of exhaustion.
He did not want to get up because even moving his body hurt. But he also needed Collin to keep him informed and take charge of the situation.
That was the only way Rin could feel like he still had control over something.
"It is fine. I might look exhausted, but I can still lead a meeting without any trouble. Tell the others that I will be there in a minute."
Rin assured him, but Collin still looked worried. His eyes lingered on Rin’s face, and he looked as though he wanted to say something else.
But the determination in Rin’s eyes must have been enough to make him comply.
"I understand. I will inform the others. But please take your time getting ready. You look like you are having a hard time."
Collin left after saying those worrying words, and Rin finally took a look in the mirror, only to end up flinching.
His eyes were bloodshot, and his complexion looked yellowish-pale. Even the blue veins beneath his skin were visible, showing just how much worse his condition had become compared to a few days ago.
No wonder Collin had backed off and even suggested that Rin rest instead of attending the meeting.
Unfortunately, Rin had no choice but to keep himself busy.
Otherwise, he was sure he was going to lose his mind to the system.
...
"-and that is what we are planning. What do you think, Master Rin? Will this plan work?"
The division leader asked in a hopeful voice.
Everyone else looked at Rin for his opinion as well, but he had not heard a word.
He had blacked out, and whatever the system was had taken over for a brief moment.
"Young Master, are you alright? About your input..."
The man asked again, and Rin decided to tell him the truth.
"Sorry, I was not able to keep up with what you said. I was thinking about something else. Can you repeat it?"
Everyone looked at Rin with worried expressions.
He had never acted like this before, so it was understandably concerning.
People exchanged glances before looking at Collin and nodding.
The butler took it as a sign that he needed to get Rin out of here and convince him to sleep for a bit.
Collin nodded and gently placed a hand on Rin’s shoulder.
"Young Master, maybe it is time for you to rest for a while. Exhaustion must be catching up to you after working so hard."
Collin tried to lead Rin out, but he was determined to see the meeting through to the end.
"I am fine. Just get me some coffee to wake me up, and I should be alright. We can continue the meeting now."
Rin assured them, and everyone else looked worried but decided to comply.
Somehow, the meeting eventually ended, and Rin quickly got up to leave.
He was feeling too dizzy, and he did not want to lose consciousness in front of everyone.
Rin was halfway to his room when he felt someone following behind him.
He picked up his pace and reached his room, only to be slammed against the door by a pair of strong hands.
A beautiful face filled his vision, and Rin found himself staring into Shelly’s bluish-purple eyes as she hovered over him.
"Shelly, what are you—"
"Don’t you dare lie to me. Now tell me exactly what is going on, or I am going to lock you in your room and tie you to the bed until you spill everything."
Shelly was in a bad mood today, and it made Rin flinch.
