Chapter 255: Ch 255: Birth of a new Calamity - Part 1

Karina looked ready to strangle Rin, and he quickly took a step back to get to a safe distance. Karina tried to come after him, but she was still clutching her darling’s hand.

The process of them fusing was still going on, which meant that she could not move much. So Rin decided to take advantage of the situation and throw a bomb toward her and her darling.

"I am sorry. I do not want to do this either. But you are a threat that I need to eliminate."

Rin told her before he ran away from her. The bomb went off, but he had no time to waste on Karina.

He handed the essence to Albus and ushered him out of the room.

"Go and inject this into Shelly. And hurry up. We have no idea how much time Shelly has left."

Rin told Albus, and he looked startled. He even tried to speak up while looking at the smoke, but Rin pushed at his back to get him going.

"Hey, I-"

"Shelly’s life is on the line. We don’t have time to sit back and gossip."

Rin reminded Albus, and he nodded before he made a dash for it.

Karina’s powers tried to bind Albus, but Kyle blocked them with his blade, allowing Albus a smooth escape.

"Y-You! How dare you interfere? I was about to achieve what I needed. You kids had no right to interfere!"

Karina declared in an angry voice as she clutched her head. Her chest had started to melt and fuse as well. It was only a matter of time before she mutated.

Rin tried to find a way to get rid of her before she mutated, but there did not seem to be a way for him to do that.

So in the end, he had prioritized saving Shelly.

"Hey, you said that we have no right to interfere, but aren’t you the one trying to use our comrade for your schemes? Do you think we will sit back and allow that?"

Rin asked as he stabbed Karina to try and separate her from her lover. But that did not help stop Karina’s mutation.

However, it did serve to piss Karina off even more.

"Huh? You are calling Shelly a comrade? She is hardly a human being. She is just a result of my experiment, born to be used for my darling’s sake. She was just fulfilling her duty, the purpose she was created for."

Karina declared, and she sounded genuinely confused about why Rin was even angry in the first place about Shelly getting hurt.

But Rin was not the only one who felt ticked off by Karina’s words. They seemed to have touched a nerve in Kyle as well.

"So, you are telling me that you birthed Shelly just to use her as an organ donor for your darling? Does that even make sense?"

Kyle asked, and Karina shrugged to show her detachment on the topic.

"Of course I birthed Shelly to use her. At first, she was a way for me to bind my husband to myself. But then things got complicated and I needed a spare. None of the clones would work. So Shelly it was."

Karina spoke with such a detached voice that it was hard to imagine her as Shelly’s mother.

Or perhaps, she never considered herself Shelly’s mother in the first place.

Rin was feeling upset, but the one who smacked Karina was Kyle. He looked so angry that his face was red and his veins were popping as well.

"So, you are telling me that you birthed Shelly just to use her for your own purpose? Does that even make sense? That’s beyond twisted-"

"Hmm, but Shelly is just a means to an end. I produced her like farmers produce prized cattle. They nurture it and make sure to give it everything it needs to grow strong, all for the sake of devouring it one day. Why should I care about her-?"

Another smack followed, and then another.

Kyle looked like he was having a hard time holding back. But Karina looked unbothered even after being hit by those attacks.

Instead, she was starting to look dazed as more and more of her body fused with her husband’s.

"You...! Why do all of you do that? Why bring life into this world when you have no intention of taking care of it?"

Kyle was starting to speak from personal experience now, and Karina gave him a pitying glance before she sighed.

"Humanity...huh? One can only afford to have it when they have everything else in their life. But for those who have lost everything, it is an unattainable luxury. I never expected to have any after I lost the meaning of my life."

Karina confessed, but it was not to invoke mercy or pity. She was just stating a fact.

It angered Kyle even more, and he tried to attack Karina once more when Rin felt a sudden surge of energy being emitted from Karina.

[Fusion in progress. Calamity awakening progress: 75%. Please keep your distance from the calamity.]

The system hardly ever warned Rin like this. But since it was warning him, it meant that Rin needed to get to a safe distance.

"Kyle, we need to get away from her now."

Rin grabbed Kyle and pulled him away. He also formed multiple layers of ice around Karina as soon as he felt her starting to go unstable.

"Darn it! This is not fair. I did not even get to hear the answers I wanted from her."

Kyle complained, but he looked far too upset to be speaking rationally.

"We don’t have time for this. A calamity is about to wake up any second. We need to be ready to deal with it."

Rin reminded Kyle, and the younger boy sighed before he nodded.

He still looked like he wanted to ask more questions, but the person who could answer them had already lost her mind. What use was there in holding on to that hope anymore?
