Chapter 254: Ch 254: A New KPI

"Molly, you have truly lost everything now. What are you going to do? I am looking forward to it."

Molly looked at the camera footage from the lab while eating her lunch. She had an amused look on her face, which indicated that she found the current situation humorous.

Karina was her ’friend’ but also a precious test subject. So, seeing her in a position that had been orchestrated by Molly was making her excited.

At first, Molly had decided not to use Karina and instead push forward with another plan. But the more she thought about it, the more she felt like Karina was the right choice to push Rin even further.

So she had made a plan and ensured that Rin followed it as well. And now, Rin had destroyed the last thing holding Karina together.

"Let’s see...! It would be good if you push Rin a little more, Karina. However, I cannot allow you to break Rin. So let’s be careful about how we handle the situation from here on."

Molly reached toward the system before pressing a few more buttons.

The outcome of this upcoming fight was as good as decided. However, she was still willing to sit through a good show to see it through.

Rin looked at the door with a tense expression.

He stood frozen, but Kyle decided to grab his arm and help him hide.

Once Rin was hidden, he watched from his safe place as the door to the lab opened and a familiar pink-haired figure entered while grinning and humming.

He had no idea what Shelly’s mother was doing here or what she was planning. But one thing was clear to him—this lab hid her secrets, and it had something to do with the man in the test tube he had just destroyed.

The door opened, and the pink-haired older woman entered the room.

"Darling, I am here to give you some essence. I harvested it from our dear daughter—"

Karina looked happy when she came inside, but that happiness turned into despair within seconds as soon as she noticed what had happened to her ’darling.’

Breathing looked difficult for Karina as she tried to come to terms with the broken test tube that contained the body of her beloved.

"W-What happened here? Who did this?"

Karina questioned, losing her reason. But Rin was more focused on what she had said. She had said that she had essence from their daughter. Wasn’t that Shelly?

’What did she do to Shelly? I need to get answers out of her, and fast.’

Rin suddenly felt desperate, and his blood surged with the need to grab Karina and demand answers.

But this time, he did not need to do that. His system decided to answer what he needed to know.

[A report on Hunter Shelly. Current status: Coma with a chance of death.]

[Reason: Essence stolen. Please return her stolen essence to ensure her health and safety.]

The system warned Rin, and he looked at the vial Karina held in her hand. That was what he needed to treat Shelly.

But how could he take back that essence without causing trouble?

Karina also looked like she was out of her mind. She reached toward her ’darling’ with trembling hands, wanting to ensure that he was alright.

But unfortunately, he was dead, and there was nothing that could be done about it.

"I-I refuse to believe this. Is this some kind of prank? If so, then it is not funny! Where is the camera? Hey, which one of you decided to prank me? Come out and I won’t get angry."

Karina demanded, and she sounded more and more unstable by the second.

"Hey, System, check on my darling! Find a way to make him alright."

Karina demanded of the system once it was clear that she had no other choice. She usually considered the system beneath herself, but she was willing to stoop that low if it meant that her darling got to live.

But even that was of no use to her. The system did not answer, causing her to become grief-stricken.

"I...cannot lose you. No! I refuse to lose you. If you are going to die, then I am going to die as well. We will both get to be reborn together."

Karina promised as she reached toward her husband and grabbed his hand.

The dead body did not react, but Karina’s body began to shine.

The system congratulated Rin, but he was not even paying it any attention. All his focus was on Karina and what she was doing.

She was holding on tightly to her husband, and her hand was fusing with the male body.

It was a disturbing sight to see, but Karina did not seem to care.

"Let’s become one, darling. And once we do, we can bring our daughter along as well and live as a real family. You want that as well, right?"

Karina asked, but she did not get an answer. Not that she was looking for one anyway.

She was too immersed in her own sorrow and guilt to pay attention to anything else at the moment. Not even the system that was telling her that a new entity was about to be born.

"What the hell? Has she truly lost her mind?"

Kyle asked in a bitter voice. But Rin had no time to waste on him.

He was entirely focused on the vial that was still clutched in Karina’s arms. It seemed to be stuck between the melted flesh, and it would be lost to the calamity at this rate.

’I will need to act now if I want to secure that essence. Darn it! I don’t want to act this recklessly. However, I will do it for Shelly’s sake.’

Rin took a deep breath before he dashed out.

"Hey, what are you doing—?"

Kyle questioned, but it was far too late for him to stop Rin.

Rin managed to get close to the grief-stricken Karina and slashed her hand. It made her drop the essence, which he grabbed and stored in his inventory.

Karina looked startled by what had happened, but then her eyes flashed and turned toward him.

"You—! So it was you who did this? I will not forgive you, Rin! How dare you—"
