Chapter 253: Ch 253: Cry for Help
"Well, we can resolve this mess later. For now, we should focus on finding Shelly first. Does anyone know where she could be?"
Kyle asked the question, but his attention was on Rin. He was waiting for Rin to pull out a miracle and show them the way.
He was lucky because Rin had a solution.
The system had given him a map of this place, which they could use to navigate it. But more importantly, Rin had a feeling he could sense Shelly if he concentrated. So he decided to follow his gut this time.
"I have a feeling I know where Shelly is. But make sure you remain vigilant while you follow me."
The trio quickly started heading in the direction Rin was leading them.
It did not take them long to start running into monsters...but there seemed to be something wrong with them.
They were humanoid-shaped, but seemed to have no consciousness, and even their flesh was rotting.
But most importantly, they were notoriously hard to kill. Hurting one of these creatures just made it heal faster, and then it would attack once more.
It went on for some time before Rin decided to freeze them. It rendered the monsters unable to move for a while.
"Let’s run before the ice melts."
He told the others, and they ran toward the next corridor. Rin had a feeling he was getting closer and closer to Shelly’s location.
And finally, he reached the final door. He had a feeling he knew what was behind it—it was Shelly.
So Rin pushed the door open and was instantly greeted by darkness.
Fear gripped his heart for a moment as he considered whether he was too late to help Shelly or not.
He was about to collapse to his knees when Albus turned on the light, and they finally noticed that Shelly was nowhere around.
Instead, what they did notice was a specimen floating in a large, life-sized incubator.
The person looked almost alive and was in an incredibly good state despite appearing dead. And something about the person in the tube also screamed familiar to Rin. He had a feeling he had seen that man before...
’But where? Where have I seen him before?’
Rin was about to reach toward the test tube when the system suddenly buzzed to life.
[A new KPI has been found.]
[Birth of the New Calamity: The Grief and Terror of the Lost One.]
[Requirements: Please smash the incubator and reduce the chances of a traitor coming back to life to zero.]
[Reward: A core. Hunter Shelly’s life.]
[Failure: Shelly’s death. A new threat emerging over humanity’s head.]
The system was clear in its demand—it wanted Rin to destroy this incubator and kill the man inside.
Rin knew he should hesitate before making such a big decision. But he did not want to hesitate.
After all, the result of hesitating was seeing Shelly die. How could he allow something like that to happen?
’I won’t allow Shelly to die! I refuse to see her waste away like this. I-I need to do something right now.’
Rin touched the incubator and instantly noticed that the glass was of supreme quality. It would not break, no matter how much force was used.
However, Rin had his own ways of making sure the glass broke, and one of them was freezing the glass until it gave way under his powers.
The liquid inside the incubator started to freeze before the glass broke, and the body flinched before being put to rest.
[Conditions to trigger the calamity: The Grief and Terror of the Lost One have been met. Restrictions will be lifted.]
[Please get ready to face another calamity.]
The system warned Rin, and he suddenly felt nervous. Had he truly done the right thing by following the system? Was he going to survive this?
He had a lot of questions regarding what the system had made him do. And finally, the system decided to reply to him.
[Rookie, there is no need to worry! I promise that you will survive today’s encounter. However, I cannot say the rest will be fine. But aren’t you glad? Your life is not in danger.]
The system tried to make light of the situation, but it only served to make Rin even more nervous and agitated.
He was not worried only about his own safety, but about that of his companions as well. He needed them alive and well if he wanted to succeed in the future.
Unfortunately, the system did not share the same concerns and did not even bother to show consideration for the others.
[I understand your frustration, Rookie. However, the system can only ensure safety for one person at a time. And that person is currently you.]
Was Rin supposed to be happy about this? Because he did not feel happy. In fact, he felt even more burdened by these words than before.
[Now, focus and hurry. Your precious Shelly likely does not have much time left. If you want to save her, then do as I am asking you to. First, make sure Karina loses her reason before she carries out her operation.]
[Now, why don’t you make some noise and attract her to this lab?]
The system asked, and Rin did not want to listen to its advice. But he felt like he had no other choice but to follow what it was asking, either.
’Darn it! Do I have no choice but to follow the system’s advice?’
Rin questioned in his mind as he looked around the lab for something breakable. It did not take him long to throw something down and smash a device. It caused the lights to spark for a second, and the room turned dark.
"Hey, what is going on here?"
Albus questioned, but Rin did not tell him anything. Mainly because he could feel another presence standing in front of the lab door.
And this presence was the one Rin had been waiting for.
’She is here. Shelly’s mom is finally here.’
Rin did not recall ever seeing her, but he knew her. Shelly liked to talk about her sometimes. And now, it was finally time to meet her.
