Chapter 252: Ch 252: Help your mother out

"Come, follow me. I am going to make sure the life I gave you is put to good use."

Shelly’s legs followed her mother to the room she was leading her to. The surroundings around her also changed rapidly, looking different in an instant.

It did not take long for her mother to open the door to the experiment room and usher Shelly in.

"Come inside and make yourself at home. I am not sure how long this will take, but since these are your final few minutes being alive, you might as well enjoy them."

Karina told Shelly while patting the bed for her to sit on.

Shelly’s body followed that silent command, and Karina quickly headed toward the back to prepare all the instruments she needed.

"Ah, do you have any questions before we begin? I can allow you that much freedom as my daughter. So go ahead! Ask what you need to ask me."

Karina gave Shelly the permission she needed, and Shelly took a deep breath before deciding to ask the question that had been bothering her for a while.

"Mother, do you hate me? Is that why you are going so far as to get rid of me?"

Shelly asked, and her mother looked stunned for a whole minute. Then laughter poured out of her throat, and tears stung her eyes.

"Hate you? Why would I hate a creation of mine and my darling’s ultimate union? Of course that’s not it. In fact, I would go as far as to say that I adore you."

Karina admitted her true feelings, but then she continued.

"However, when it comes to choosing between you and my darling, there is no competition. You wouldn’t choose me if it were between me and Rin either, right?"

Shelly’s mother asked, and Shelly slowly nodded.

Her mother was right. If she had to choose between Rin and her mother, then Rin would always win. Shelly was certain of that fact, and that was why it was hard for her to hold this grudge against her mother.

’Hmm, but Mother made a fatal mistake. She gave me access to my speech. Now, I can call for help.’

The ones Shelly messaged were Albus and, much to her displeasure, Kyle. Her instincts told her to call Rin, but she did not do that. She did not want Rin to be in trouble because of her.

It was hard to tell whether her mother noticed or not. But even if she did, she chose to ignore what her young daughter was doing.

"There is no point in doing anything funny when I am here to stop you. The sooner you stop resisting, the better it will be for you."

Her mother warned her before Shelly felt a cold liquid being pushed into her veins. The next second, she started losing consciousness.

"Good night, my dear Shelly. May you never wake up again."

Karina whispered to her daughter as she watched those violet eyes close. Finally, her beloved would be back, and all it cost her was her daughter.

"Something feels...wrong..."

Rin looked at his system, but there was no message from anyone. That meant that no one needed his help.

But still, he could not shake the feeling that something was going on and someone needed his help at that moment.

He was about to make a call to the others, asking them if they needed help, but he ran into Albus before he could do that.

"Albus, is everything alright—"

Rin started to ask before he noticed the panicked look on Albus’s face. It was clear to him that something was going on.

But Albus did not tell him what was wrong. Instead, he chose to skirt around the topic and look around nervously.

"R-Rin, what are you doing here...? N-Not that there is anything wrong with you being here or anything. I just... can I help you with anything?"

Albus was not a good liar. He had the skills to be one, but he somehow fumbled in front of Rin. Not that Rin considered it a problem.

In fact, this was a good habit from Rin’s perspective because it ensured that Albus was not able to hide anything from him.

"Albus, are you hiding something from me?"

Rin asked, and Albus flinched. He looked away, not wanting to tell Rin what was going on.

This was weird in itself because Albus was not someone who preferred keeping secrets like this.

"Albus, spill it!"

"I don’t think I should. If Shelly did not contact you, then she might not want you there..."

"Ah, so it’s about Shelly. Now, are you going to tell me more, or do you want me to pry the truth from your lips?"

Rin asked in a slightly threatening voice, and Albus flinched.

But he was still loyal enough not to betray Shelly.

"I-I cannot say anything. Please understand my fragile heart and let this go. I promise I will bring her back safely."

Albus promised, and Rin was starting to piece together what was happening.

But there were too many clues missing.

Thankfully, someone else decided to drop by and fill him in on the situation at hand. And that person was Kyle.

"You both...what are you doing here? We need to hurry and save Shelly before it’s too late. She sent a message that her mother is here and she is doing something weird..."

Albus’s face looked pained, and he took a few deep breaths to calm himself down.

Rin, on the other hand, looked like he had won the jackpot, and he turned toward Albus and smacked him on the back in a "playful" manner.

"I see. So this is what it’s about? You should have told me instead of beating around the bush. It would have been much easier, right?"

Rin asked, and Albus flinched at his words.

"I...how could I do that when Shelly did not want to call you? I am sure she did not send you a message on purpose..."

Albus pointed out, and Rin knew he was right. But he still wanted to save Shelly with his own hands. That was not too much to ask for, right?
