Ugh, so this one was another failure? What a pity! I was really hopeful that I would get to see results this time."

Karina let out a sigh as she looked at another of her ’failed’ specimens. The specimen’s body was melting due to the strong drug it had been injected with, but at least it was alive.

But what good was it to bring someone back to life when they had neither their body nor their consciousness? It might as well be an ugly puppet at this point.

"Alright, you are free to roam this facility. As for the drug...it seems like I will have to adjust the dose again."

Karina sighed and got back to work. She was determined to make the experiment a success at all costs.

But even she knew that she was missing something important for her research.

The reason she was failing was not because of the drug’s effects, but because it was missing a key component. And that component could only be found in her dear daughter.

"Ah, I wanted to complete this experiment without sacrificing Shelly. But it seems like I have no choice left. I better go and bring that girl here..."

Karina was about to head out and get Shelly when she noticed that she had a few messages. They were all from the lab’s security system, informing her that a few people had entered the facility.

She was about to give the command to eradicate them all when she noticed that one of the people on the list was Shelly.

"Oh! My dear daughter decided to finally find time to visit me? And at such a perfect time as well? Is this a message from the system?"

Karina asked in a voice filled with disbelief.

She had never believed in the gods or the system before, but she was beginning to wonder if there truly was a god looking after her.

"Oh! This is wonderful news. I should go and bring Shelly here right now. I am sure she would be delighted to help her father as well."

Karina was lost in her own delusions, and she projected her love for her partner onto Shelly as well.

But first, Karina needed to make sure Shelly was separated from everyone so that she could talk to her daughter.

And that was how the maze started to change slowly until everyone ended up alone. Now it was finally time for her to go and talk to Shelly.

The corridor felt like it would never end. Shelly kept walking, but she could not tell whether she was making progress or not.

The only thing that kept her going was the fact that she could feel where Rin was. And she was following the traces left behind by him to find him for now.

She made it quite far before she sensed that she was being followed by someone.

That feeling made her pause and look in the direction she had felt it coming from.

"Who is there? Show yourself..."

Shelly called out, but no one answered her question. It left her with no choice but to take action first.

She grabbed a dagger and threw it toward the direction she felt that stare coming from, and the dagger collided with a camera, breaking it apart.

But that feeling of being watched still lingered.

Slowly, a familiar figure emerged from the corridor’s shadows, and Shelly’s body became tense.

"You...what are you doing here...Mother?"

Shelly questioned in a low voice. She did not find it comforting that her mother had decided to show herself here. It usually meant that she was planning something.

"My dear daughter, is this truly the way for you to talk to your mother? You should be more careful with how you speak."

Karina spoke softly, but her tone held no heat. She was not here to cause Shelly any trouble.

But just the fact that she was here left a sour taste in Shelly’s mouth.

"What are you here for?"

Shelly asked once more, not falling into her mother’s trap of distraction. She did not trust anything Karina had to say to her.

Karina sighed as she looked at Shelly, and she even shook her head. But if this was supposed to make Shelly feel bad, then it was not working.

"My dear daughter ended up becoming a rebel. Can’t you see that this mother is heartbroken?"

Shelly showed no reaction to Karina’s theatrics, and the elder woman noticed this as well. So Karina immediately dropped the act and got to the point.

"Well, let’s get to the main discussion, alright? The reason I have come to you is simple—I want your heart. Since I gave it to you, then it shouldn’t be too much trouble to give it back to me, right?"

Karina demanded as she reached toward Shelly’s chest, toward where her heart was. She almost touched it when someone grabbed Karina’s hand and pushed it back.

She looked up, only to see Shelly’s annoyed expression.

"Mother, please stop joking around. Is there a reason you are here? If there is no other reason, then I will take my leave now—"

Karina grabbed Shelly’s shoulder and pulled her back.

"Where do you think you are going? I did not give you permission to leave."

Karina stopped Shelly, and Shelly tried to walk away, only to find that she could not even move. Her mother had found a way to keep her contained.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Shelly asked in a tense voice. She was going to break these bonds, but she wanted more information before she took any action.

Unfortunately for her, Karina had no intention of letting her know too much.

"You do not need to know what is happening, my dear child. Just know that I am doing this to help your father. Now, be a good child and come help your father."

Karina demanded, and Shelly felt her legs following her mother.

She did not want to go after her mother, but her body was not giving her a choice.

’Rin, help me out! I-I want to see you again!’

Shelly tried calling out, but even her mouth wouldn’t move without her mother’s permission. This was the worst situation possible for her.
