Chapter 248: Ch 248: Truth and Dare

"Alright, you can ask your questions later. For now, we need to prepare to head out. So shelve your questions for now."

Mira cheerfully told Shelly before skipping toward the exit. She had such a strong presence that it felt impossible to ignore her.

Shelly felt her nails dig into her palm as she looked at Mira’s back with a blank expression. Rin had a feeling she was about to kill Mira if he did not stop her right this second.

"There is no need to take Mira’s words seriously, Shelly. Of course, I am going to answer your questions whenever you ask me."

Rin told Shelly, and she finally looked a little more relaxed. She immediately turned to look at him with a slightly blank expression on her face before words poured out of her mouth.

"Do you like Mira? Do you like her more than me? Is that why you are defending her in front of me?"

Shelly asked, and Rin felt speechless.

He had not been defending Mira at all; he had just been stating facts. But somehow, Shelly had misunderstood his intentions toward Mira and started questioning his sincerity.

"Shelly, I don’t like Mira that way. Even if I were to develop a relationship with Mira, I doubt we would ever be anything more than siblings. So you don’t have to worry about such things."

Rin promised Shelly, and she nodded to show that she understood. However, her worries were still clear in her eyes.

Thankfully, they did not affect the rest of the trip.

...

The van ride forced people to interact, even when they did not want to.

Rin was perfectly capable of keeping to himself and enjoying his time. But that did not mean the others were in the same position.

Mira was especially outgoing and decided to grab anyone she could to answer her questions or participate in one of her experiments.

Her latest victim was Albus, and the poor former hero tried to get away from her clutches but failed.

"Miss Mira, I don’t feel comfortable with how close you are sitting to me. Can you please go back to your seat?"

Albus asked as he tried to scoot away from her. But Mira cornered him quickly and even gave him an amused look.

"Don’t worry, kid. I am not that interested in you. I just want to check a few things with you, that’s all. So I would appreciate it if you didn’t move."

Mira told Albus, causing him to tense up.

"I-I still don’t think it’s a good idea-"

Mira did not listen and yanked out a strand of his healthy hair to get a sample. Albus cried out in pain and begged for help.

Luckily, he had swapped driving duties with Kyle and was relaxing in the back now. But as someone destined to suffer, he could not escape Mira’s clutches.

"S-Someone, help me out. My hair! My precious hair is being yanked out. I cannot go bald like this! It is not a good look for someone like me. R-Rin, help me out!"

Albus turned toward Rin with a lot of trust, but Rin turned his head away at the last second, shattering Albus’s trust.

"There is no point in trying to run away from me, Albus. It’s time you accept your fate. You will have to give me more samples."

Mira laughed like a maniac as she successfully extracted the hair she wanted before settling back into her seat.

Albus quickly curled up in his own space as well, looking sullen after what had happened. But Rin did not dare respond because he did not want to see the disappointed look on Albus’s face any more than he already had.

Their journey continued until they hit a roadblock.

Kyle checked out what it was and got out of the van, only to start fighting the monsters. He was so fast that no one else even got a chance.

And then the drive continued.

It was a long and tiring ride. But since there were more than a few decent drivers, it was easy to switch along the way.

They soon entered the desert-like roads, and Shelly looked out the window with a heavy expression on her face.

"We are close to the facility now. My mother told me that there were a lot of secrets hidden in this place, and that was why it would never be open to the public. Whatever you see or hear here was never meant to be revealed to the general public. So enter with a sense of caution."

Shelly warned with a grim look on her face.

It almost seemed as if she was repeating someone else’s words, and Rin recalled that she often liked to visit her mother at her workplace. So it was possible that Shelly had been here before.

Their van stopped in front of the huge facility, and then it was time to decide how to search such a massive place.

Their goal was simple—to find any evidence they could and also look for ways to stop the apocalypse.

"Let’s split up for now. That way, we will be able to cover more ground. Rin, you don’t mind coming with me, right? There are some things I need to check with you."

Mira asked, and Rin was about to nod when he looked at Shelly. But he was surprised to see that she did not protest or make any comment about Mira’s suggestion.

In fact, her lack of reaction was much more concerning than if she had shown one.

But since she did not react, Mira quickly grew impatient and grabbed Rin’s hand to drag him inside.

"Make sure to gather all the evidence and bring it to me. And don’t go too far. Regroup after two hours so that we can compare what we found. I will see you then."

Mira waved her hand as she and Rin disappeared beyond the facility’s main gate.

Everyone looked at Shelly, waiting for her reaction, but it never came. Instead, she entered with a blank expression and without a partner. But no one was brave enough to follow her and ask what was wrong.

"I guess it’s time for us to head in as well. Everyone, let’s go."

Albus spoke softly but confidently as he entered first.

Then everyone else followed after him.
