Chapter 247: Ch 247: Heading out

"This is enough playing around, Mira. We need to pay attention to the mission now."

Kyle reminded Mira, and she pouted at his warning. However, Kyle remained neutral and did not show Mira that he was affected by her looks.

Finally, Mira sighed and nodded to show that she understood what he was saying, which was fortunate.

Mainly because Shelly looked like she was going to eat Mira alive.

Kyle had figured out Shelly’s nature, and unlike Mira, he had no intention of provoking her more than necessary. He did not enjoy having his neck on the line, after all.

"Let’s leave now. The sooner we get to the lab, the sooner we can start investigating."

Kyle changed the topic, and everyone nodded. Mira was the only one who looked sulky at his words, but that was because she had figured out what he was trying to do.

"This is not fair. Are you trying to ruin my fun?"

She asked in a whiny voice, but Kyle just flicked her forehead playfully.

"I am just trying to save your life. Showing me a little gratitude won’t kill you."

He reminded her, but Mira just rolled her eyes before following him out.

’Shelly seems to be in a bad mood right now. Should I ask her what is wrong this time?’

Rin could feel Shelly’s grip tightening around his hand, but he chose not to say anything about it.

He did not want Shelly to feel self-conscious, and he also did not want her to do anything drastic that could harm her.

So the best way to handle this situation was to pretend he did not notice anything that was happening or what Shelly was doing.

It worked, and they headed out in a large 12-seater van. The one driving was Albus, since he had the most experience based on his memories.

The mood was heavy, so Albus tried to lighten it.

"We are finally on the road. Are you all excited to head to the facility?"

He asked, but silence answered him.

The tension in the van was so thick that it could be cut with a knife. Even Albus failed to ease it.

Rin felt the tension pressing down on him, and he did not know what he could do to make the situation a little better for himself and the others.

However, there was one person immune to the effects of this tension.

Mira decided it was time to start chatting away about everything and nothing.

"Hey, since we’re out on the road, shall we play a game? It can be truth or dare...or even another one that interests you."

Mira pitched the idea, but no one said they were interested.

That did not deter Mira, and she turned to look at Shelly with twinkling eyes.

"Shelly, you like Rin, right? How long have you liked him? And what made you start liking him in the first place?"

Mira asked, making Shelly’s grip tighten around Rin’s arm.

It was such a personal question that there was no need for Shelly to answer it.

Rin even reached out to touch her hand and tell her that she could exercise her right to remain silent.

But Shelly chose to answer the question.

"I started liking Rin a long time ago. I think I developed a crush on him the first time I saw him. And the rest is history."

Mira made a noise of understanding in her throat at Shelly’s words.

"I see. So you have known each other your whole lives? That’s a long commitment. But I can understand. Rin has his charms."

"That’s right! Rin has his charms, but he’s also absentminded enough that I worry for his safety and well-being. He trusts people too easily and chooses to believe them even when he shouldn’t."

That was a direct jab at Mira.

Shelly was hinting at the fact that Rin was choosing to trust her and Kyle without any evidence about their identities or where they were from.

Instead of taking offense, Mira decided to laugh the situation off.

"That’s right. Rin is great in that aspect. I am sure you like that part of him as well. Are you going to adopt the same views?"

Mira asked, and Shelly immediately made a face that gave away her answer.

"I am...not as keen on getting external help as Rin is. I won’t say much because this is Rin’s choice, but I can always keep an eye on things to protect him from accidental harm."

Shelly pointed out, and Mira gave her an amused look at her boldness. It did not seem as though Mira was offended at any point during the conversation.

Rin carefully kept himself out of the situation, choosing to ignore the growing tension. Kyle chose to do the same.

Finally, the situation seemed to calm down, and Rin let out a long breath, only for Shelly to turn toward him next.

"Since I answered my question, can I go next? Rin, can I ask you the next question?"

Shelly asked, and Rin rubbed his forehead to ease the building tension. He was suddenly afraid of whatever question Shelly might ask him.

But he had a feeling that refusing was not an option either. He had people looking at him with interested expressions, and he sighed before giving up.

The game was truth or dare, but Rin could always lie if he needed to. His end goal was to make sure the mood did not worsen any further.

"Fine! I’ll play along."

He told Shelly, and she lit up. She opened her mouth to ask him a question, then closed it before opening it again.

It seemed like she could not decide what to ask him.

"This is...much more difficult than I thought. There are a lot of questions I want to ask you. But I don’t want to ask them in front of other people..."

Shelly pointed out, and just like that, the game ended.

Mira pouted in her seat, but she ultimately did not ask to continue either.
