Chapter 235: Ch 235: Against the Demon King
Thankfully, Mira’s performance did not last long.
Once she realized that her tears were having no effect on either Rin or Shelly, she decided to change tactics and started cooperating with them.
The conversation soon shifted to the next topic—how to deal with the Demon King.
"Do you think the three of us will be enough to take the Demon King down? Has the system given you any information about it?"
Mira asked, and Rin decided to check the information section.
There had been nothing about the Demon King when he checked last time, but things could have changed in the meantime.
At first, he found nothing. However, after searching through a few more menus, he finally discovered the detailed information section he had been looking for.
[Boss Enemy Information:
Name: The Demon King III
Type: Mindless Doll of Malice.
Description: The current Demon King was once a wise ruler who lost his kingdom to the darkness. Unable to endure it any longer, he sacrificed both his future and his kingdom’s future to that darkness in exchange for eternal life.
Abilities: Undisclosed.
Traits: Undisclosed.]
"Wow! That’s some generic text. It’s completely useless as well."
Mira commented dryly.
Rin agreed with her statement. It also explained why the boss’s information had been so difficult to find.
After all, who would bother looking for information that offered no practical value? It was better kept out of the way.
"Looks like there aren’t any power levels listed here. What do you want to do now? Should we head toward the Demon King’s chamber?"
Rin asked the pair.
Realistically, three people should not have stood a chance against the boss. But that was only if one looked at the numbers without considering who those people actually were.
Shelly alone was worth ten ordinary fighters, and Mira was even more powerful.
This line-up actually had a chance against the boss.
"We should start heading toward the boss room. I’m sure we’ll run into someone on the way there. Kyle told me he was going straight for the boss and planned to ignore everything else. With some luck, we’ll run into him before we get there."
Mira’s words helped Rin feel a little more reassured, and he agreed with the decision.
They quickly headed toward the boss room, but they did not encounter anyone along the way.
Rin immediately heard the sound of metal clashing from inside the chamber. It sounded as though someone was fighting the boss on equal footing.
But who could match the boss this well?
"Looks like Kyle got here before us. We should hurry, or there won’t be anything left for us to fight."
That outcome sounded perfect to Rin.
In fact, he preferred it over the alternative. He would have been perfectly happy to let Kyle deal with the boss alone, but that would have been a selfish thing to do.
He should help wherever he could.
"Kyle seems to be having fun. I’ll join in as well."
Mira declared before leaping into the fight without waiting for anyone’s response.
Kyle somehow noticed her approach and immediately created an opening for her to join the battle.
Their teamwork was impressive, but Rin could still tell that both of them were holding back.
Shelly also seemed restless beside him, and Rin felt bad for making her restrain herself.
"If you want to join the fight, you should. Go let your frustration out."
Shelly looked startled by his offer.
She glanced between the battle and Rin’s face with an uncertain expression, almost as if asking whether he truly meant it.
"What are you hesitating for at this point? It’s not like I’m unfamiliar with your true nature. I doubt there’s another side of you that could drive me away."
Rin reassured her.
He had not even realized that this had been weighing on her mind.
Shelly’s expression shifted at his words. Her uncertainty melted away and transformed into delight. Her eyes sharpened, resembling those of a predator that had finally found its prey.
"Rin, you promised me that you wouldn’t be afraid of me or look at me differently. I will hold you to your word."
Shelly told him before grabbing her sword and jumping into the battle as well.
A shiver ran down Rin’s spine at Shelly’s response.
Somehow, he felt as though he had awakened a sleeping beast within her.
Even so, he could not bring himself to regret his choice.
Reassuring Shelly felt like an endless cycle, but it was one he did not mind repeating.
After all, Shelly was special to him, and he was not ashamed to admit it.
"God, I sound like I’m hopelessly in love—"
[Rookie, I’m back! How’s the raid on the Demon King going? Oh! It looks like you’re already in the final phase of it. Is it fun? Should this senior increase the difficulty?]
The system returned at exactly the wrong moment and shattered Rin’s train of thought.
He stared at the system screen with an annoyed expression before letting out a sigh as it floated in front of his vision.
’Right. There’s no point in getting upset just because my thoughts were interrupted.’
"Hey, where were you all this time? You didn’t even contact me."
Rin asked, changing the subject.
The system immediately rushed to defend itself.
[This senior was busy with... external company matters. This senior of yours is extremely popular and very busy. You should be honored that I take time out of my hectic schedule to play with you.]
The system had a terrible habit of switching between first-person and third-person speech.
It was something Rin had grown accustomed to, but it still got on his nerves sometimes.
Especially right now.
Or perhaps it was the smug tone the system was using.
[Anyway, I see that you’ve made it to the Demon King, Rookie! Congratulations. But don’t let your guard down. The Demon King has quite a few tricks up its sleeve. You’d better keep your distance when you defeat it, or it’ll take all of you down with it.]
The warning came just in time.
Rin looked up and noticed that Kyle was about to land the finishing blow on the Demon King.
If the system was right, the resulting explosion would take everyone nearby with it.
Rin could not allow that to happen.
"Everyone, get back! The Demon King is about to explode!"
