Chapter 236: Ch 236: Don’t let your guard down
Thankfully, Mira’s performance did not last long.
Once she realized that her tears were having no effect on either Rin or Shelly, she decided to change tactics and started cooperating with them.
The conversation soon shifted to the next topic—how to deal with the Demon King.
"Do you think the three of us will be enough to take the Demon King down? Has the system given you any information about it?" Mira asked.
Rin decided to check the information section.
There had been nothing about the Demon King when he had checked last time, but things could have changed in the meantime.
At first, he found nothing. However, after searching through a few more menus, he finally discovered the detailed information section he had been looking for.
[Boss Enemy Information:
Name: The Demon King III
Type: Mindless Doll of Malice.
Description: The current Demon King was once a wise ruler who lost his kingdom to darkness. Unable to endure it any longer, he sacrificed both his future and the future of his kingdom to that darkness in exchange for eternal life.
Abilities: Undisclosed.
Traits: Undisclosed.]
"Wow! That’s some generic text. It’s completely useless as well," Mira complained.
Rin silently agreed with her.
But it also explained why the boss’s information had been so difficult to find.
After all, who would bother looking up information that provided almost no useful details? It made sense to bury it deep within the menus.
"Looks like there aren’t any power levels listed here. What do you want to do now? Do you still want to head toward the Demon King’s room?" Rin asked the pair.
Realistically, three people should not have stood a chance against the boss.
But that was only if one looked at the numbers alone.
Shelly was worth ten ordinary fighters by herself, and Mira was even stronger.
This line-up actually had a chance.
"We should head toward the boss room," Mira said. "Kyle told me he was planning to ignore everything else and rush straight for the boss. With some luck, we’ll run into him on the way."
Those words helped Rin relax a little, and he agreed with the decision.
The three of them quickly made their way toward the boss room, but they did not encounter anyone along the way.
As they approached, Rin immediately heard the sound of metal clashing from inside.
It sounded as though someone was fighting the boss on equal footing.
But who could match the Demon King this well?
"Looks like Kyle got here before us," Mira said. "We should hurry, or there won’t be anything left for us to fight."
That sounded perfect to Rin.
In fact, he preferred that outcome over the alternative.
He was more than happy to let Kyle handle the boss himself, but standing around and doing nothing would be a terrible move.
He should help wherever he could.
"Kyle seems to be having fun. I’ll join in as well."
Without waiting for anyone’s response, Mira leapt into the battle.
Kyle somehow noticed her arrival and immediately adjusted his movements to make room for her.
Their coordination was excellent, but Rin could still tell that both of them were holding back.
Shelly, standing beside him, was beginning to grow restless as well.
Rin felt a little guilty for asking her to restrain herself.
"If you want to join the fight, then go ahead," Rin said. "Get some of that frustration out."
Shelly looked startled by the offer.
Her gaze shifted between the battle and Rin’s face, as though she were asking whether he truly meant it.
"What are you hesitating for?" Rin asked. "It’s not as if I’m unfamiliar with your true nature. I doubt there’s another side of you that could make me turn away."
Rin’s reassurance made Shelly freeze.
He had not realized that this had been weighing on her mind.
The uncertainty in Shelly’s eyes gradually disappeared, replaced by unmistakable delight.
Her gaze sharpened, almost like a predator that had finally spotted its prey.
"Rin, you promised that you wouldn’t fear me or look at me differently," Shelly said softly. "I’ll hold you to those words."
With that, she gripped her sword and jumped into the battle.
A shiver ran down Rin’s spine.
For some reason, he felt as though he had awakened a sleeping beast inside her.
Yet he could not bring himself to regret it.
Reassuring Shelly had become an endless cycle.
But it was one he did not mind repeating.
After all, Shelly was special to him, and he was not ashamed to admit it.
"God, I sound like I’m in love—"
[Rookie, I’m back! How’s the raid on the Demon King going? Oh! It looks like you’re already in the final phase. Is it fun? Should this senior increase the difficulty?]
The system returned at precisely the wrong moment and shattered Rin’s concentration.
He stared at the screen with an annoyed expression before letting out a sigh as it floated before his eyes.
’Right. There’s no point getting upset just because my thoughts were interrupted.’
"Hey, where were you all this time?" Rin asked, changing the subject. "You didn’t contact me at all."
The system immediately defended itself.
[This senior was busy handling... external company matters. This senior is extremely popular and very busy. You should feel honored that I take time out of my schedule to play with you.]
The system had an annoying habit of switching between first-person and third-person perspectives.
Rin had grown used to it.
But it still irritated him sometimes.
Like now.
Or perhaps it was simply the smug tone it was using.
[Anyway, I see you’ve made it to the Demon King, Rookie! Congratulations. But don’t let your guard down. The Demon King has quite a few tricks up its sleeve. Also, keep your distance when you finish it off, or it’ll take you down with it.]
The warning arrived just in time.
Rin looked up and realized Kyle was about to land the finishing blow.
If the system was right, the resulting explosion would take all of them with it.
Rin could not allow that to happen.
"Everyone, get back!" Rin shouted. "The Demon King is about to explode!"
