Chapter 233: Ch 233: Blood Samples

"A long time ago, there was a genius who understood far too much. But because she understood too much, she had to keep her head down, or she would be exploited to hell and back. So, she decided to hide her talents."

"But alas, who can truly hide brilliance? Her parents discovered her abilities and decided to sell her off to a facility so they could make use of them. That made the girl resentful, and she closed off her heart. That was how she lived for the next few years, until she met the person who taught her how to dream once more."

"So the girl began dreaming of a future again, one she could share with that man. But then he betrayed her by dying. How could that genius girl allow the man who had shown her the world to leave her behind like that? Their love needed to keep burning, and—"

Her mother was still rambling about her love story when Shelly gathered enough composure to attack her again.

Karina sighed as she watched her daughter struggle before using the powers provided by the system to hold Shelly in place.

Sigh.

"Impatience is not an attractive look, Shelly. Rin won’t like you if he sees how you behave in front of me."

Shelly gritted her teeth at her mother’s words.

"Keep Rin’s name out of your mouth. You are the reason he’s in his current situation and suffering. You caused this world to become like this—"

"I know, and I am not ashamed of it. Since this was what I needed to get my darling back, I did it without hesitation. Just like you would have done if you had been in my position."

Shelly could not even deny her mother’s words because they were true.

Karina sighed at her daughter’s stubbornness before reaching into her inventory and pulling out a syringe.

"My dear daughter. My greatest experiment... give me your blood. I will make good use of it and bring your father back to life."

Shelly struggled against her restraints as blood was drawn from her body. She wanted to break free, but the binds did not even allow her to move properly.

Once her mother got what she wanted, she decided it was time to leave.

But before that—

"Since you’ve been such a good girl for me, allow me to present you with a gift as well. I will clear away those other obstacles between you and Rin. That way, you’ll be able to get to his heart much more easily."

Karina snapped her fingers, and the structure of the castle began to change.

"What are you doing?"

Shelly demanded, but her mother did not answer. She simply walked through the portal that appeared before her and disappeared to the other side. The restraints holding Shelly finally released her.

"Darn that woman! She never listens to others and always causes trouble as well. Now, what did she do?"

Shelly muttered as she looked around. The walls around her had changed as well, revealing a random hallway.

Rin’s presence felt nearby, so she decided to head toward him first.

After all, he was the only one she truly cared about.

__________

"Darn it! This place is already troublesome, and now the internal structure is changing as well? What am I even supposed to do about this?"

Reina complained as she ran through chamber after chamber, trying to find her teammates.

She had been lucky enough not to run into any monsters so far, but it was only a matter of time before that changed.

Her luck finally ran out when she encountered a small group of zombies, but they were easy enough for her to deal with.

She shot at them until they could no longer stand before running past them before they could recover.

Her current plan was to find one of the others and stick with them. But doing so without a map felt almost impossible.

Thankfully, the sound of fighting reached her sharp ears, and she decided to follow it.

She turned the next corner, only to see zombies frozen in place by an all-too-familiar power. Gasping, she hurried toward the center of the scene, where Teressa was using her abilities.

But strangely enough, Teressa could not move even an inch.

"Teressa, are you alright?"

Reina asked worriedly. Teressa looked a little worse for wear, but otherwise unharmed.

"I-I’m... fine! But I can’t move. Can you grab me and get me away from these zombies?"

Teressa asked.

A small part of Reina wondered if she should simply leave Teressa there.

That way, she would have one less love rival for Rin...

But her conscience would never allow her to make that choice.

So she grabbed Teressa and dragged her away from the pile of zombies.

Teressa released her powers once they were a safe distance away, and the two immediately started running again.

It was time to find someone else.

Luckily, they ran into Albus next, and their journey became much smoother from there.

__________

"What is going on here?"

Rin questioned as the walls around him began to move.

He looked down at the map, only to find that the castle’s internal structure had changed, causing the route to the central chamber to become much longer.

Not only that, but the change had also shuffled the positions of all his allies, forcing him to sigh and begin tracking them again.

[Warning: Due to external interference, some features of the map are being locked. You can no longer view individual positions on the map. All allies will now be marked with the same icon.]

"Tsk, what an inconvenience!"

Rin nearly yelled before taking a deep breath and calming himself down.

A few monsters tried to take advantage of his distraction, only to end up frozen seconds later.

The new situation made Rin sigh, but it was not entirely bad.

The system still showed the locations of his allies, so as long as he followed its guidance, he was bound to find one of them eventually, right?

’I hope I find Shelly and Albus soon. We can raid the boss room that way and put an end to this situation.’

Unfortunately, the first person he ran into was neither Shelly nor Albus.

It was someone he had no desire to meet.

"Oh! It’s Subject #00. What an honor to meet you. Allow me to introduce myself properly. My name is Mira. We’ve met before."
