Chapter 232: Ch 232: I’m here for Samples

’What is this woman up to? I refuse to believe she is genuinely worried about me. I am sure she has a reason for coming here.’

Shelly remained vigilant, refusing to drop her guard against her mother, and her mother seemed to be aware of it as well.

Still, the fact that she was not saying anything reassured Shelly that her mother’s visit had a purpose.

"Stop beating around the bush and say why you are here. I don’t have time for you to beat around the bush."

Shelly warned her mother, and the woman let out a sigh of regret.

"Tsk, you truly have no filial piety. How can you say such mean things to your mother of all people? But fine! Since you insist, allow me to tell you why I am here. I just need your help with a little experiment."

Her mother’s words finally made Shelly relax.

She had almost thought her mother had lost her mind earlier when she was acting like a loving mother.

But this seemed more like her real character.

"You want me to help you with an experiment? What kind of experiment?"

Shelly asked without missing a beat.

This was not the first time her mother had asked for her help. In fact, Shelly had been helping her mother ever since she had learned how to walk.

But she doubted the help her mother was asking for this time was anything normal.

"Oh! It’s nothing big! Don’t worry! You won’t even feel a thing. All I want are a few blood samples from you...and from Rin as well. Nothing too serious—"

Shelly could agree to give her own samples to her mother, but she drew the line at Rin’s samples.

Knowing her mother, there was a high chance that Rin would end up in trouble if she agreed to this.

Shelly attacked without hesitation, but her strikes passed right through her mother’s body, almost as if she were a ghost that could not be touched.

"What do you think you are doing, Shelly? Do you want to fight me over a few samples? That is not like you."

Her mother sighed at her behavior, but Shelly disregarded her concerns and kept attacking.

Sigh

"I feel like we are getting nowhere like this. Now, be a good girl and settle down."

Her mother snapped her fingers, and Shelly felt invisible hands trying to hold her down. Her knees weakened, and her body ached under the external pressure pressing against her.

But Shelly fought against it all to break free.

Her mother sighed as she walked toward Shelly and grabbed her face.

"I know it’s hard for you, Shelly. But my intention is not to hurt you. In fact, I want our family to be together again. Now, be a good girl and sit still."

Those words usually worked on Shelly, but not this time. She broke free from her restraints as soon as that syringe touched her body and shattered the glass tube.

Her mother’s expression finally began to show frustration.

"Stop resisting me! Can’t you see that I am doing this for our family’s sake? Your father is still asleep, and I just want to wake him up—"

"Mother, that’s your wish. You want to wake Father up, and you are willing to go to any lengths to achieve it...but I am not you. I don’t have the same affection for my DNA donor. So stop trying to guilt me into helping you."

This was the first time Shelly had stood up to her mother and said all of this. The disbelief on her mother’s face made Shelly want to let out a laugh.

It felt good, but hollow at the same time.

"You ungrateful girl! Ugh, do you think you are any different from me? That couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, you are just like me—obsessive and willing to go to any lengths to get what you want. Don’t you agree?"

Her mother brought up a good point.

Shelly was obsessed with Rin in the same way her mother was obsessed with her father. In fact, Shelly was willing to go to the same lengths if Rin were in her father’s place.

"Mother, you are right. I am ungrateful and obsessive. But you are the one I learned it all from. So why are you blaming me for it?"

Shelly asked, and her mother let out a startled laugh.

"You...are truly my masterpiece. Ah, but I knew this would happen. After all, I crafted you in my image because I could not bear to see you resemble my darling. I wanted a piece of him, and yet, how could I let anyone take him away? That’s why I modified you."

"Excuse me?"

Shelly asked, feeling as though she had just heard a secret she was never supposed to hear.

Her mother laughed at Shelly’s expression of disbelief before continuing.

"What? Did you think I would allow anyone to inherit a piece of my darling that even I cannot have? The only thing you carry is his DNA, and that was to ensure I had a source of it if he were to pass away so that I could clone him using a different technology."

"And I did try that a few times, but those things...they weren’t my darling. Anyway, let’s end our discussion here. All I want are your and Rin’s blood samples."

Her mother sighed, and Shelly felt like she should have been shocked by what she had heard.

But that feeling of shock never came.

What she did feel was a sense of rage at the fact that her mother still wanted to use Rin for her plans.

"I understand why you want my blood, but why Rin’s? What does he have to do with any of this?"

Shelly asked, and her mother looked at her in disbelief before letting out a soft laugh.

"Are you asking me because you truly don’t know? Or are you pretending not to know...? Oh, maybe Rin never told you about all this because he did not trust you."

The more her mother spoke, the angrier Shelly became. Her sword suddenly blazed when she attacked her mother again, and the older woman sighed before snapping her fingers.

Arms emerged from the ground to hold Shelly in place while her mother grabbed her face.

"My dear daughter, let me tell you a story about my desperation. Won’t you be a good girl and listen?"
