Chapter 443: 443 Resident Evil 3

Since it was a dark forest and we didn’t know what might be out there, it took some time to proceed carefully while checking our surroundings, but we made it to the crashed helicopter without incident.

"Captain, it looks like Bravo Team’s helicopter."

"Joseph, search the helicopter."

Under Wesker’s orders, we maintained perimeter security while Joseph, the engineer, searched the helicopter.

"Damn, Kevin’s body is in here! But it’s strange, there are bite marks on it."

"What about the other team members?"

"Not here."

"Then, check the cause of the crash with Jin."

Since I was also an engineer, Wesker instructed me to check the helicopter’s condition.

I meticulously examined the exterior of the helicopter.

Of course, I already knew the real reason for the crash.

Wesker had deliberately sabotaged the helicopter to lure S.T.A.R.S. into the Arklay Mountains and the research facility to collect combat data on B.O.W.s (Bio-Organic Weapons).

But an unexpected variable arose: there were more Bravo Team survivors than anticipated.

In the end, Wesker modified his plan, luring Alpha Team to the scene as well to continue his scheme.

That’s why we were here.

"Captain, it’s too dark to determine the exact cause right now, but it looks like an engine problem. I’d have to take it apart to be sure."

"Really? How was it maintained... Alright. We’ll start searching for any Bravo Team survivors nearby. Since it’s a forest and it’s dark, don’t stray from the team, maintain spacing, and conduct the search."

’This guy’s got a mouth on him, considering he broke it himself.’

I knew Wesker was acting, but I couldn’t let on.

Following his instructions, I began searching the area while keeping watch.

I casually grabbed the Origin shotgun as well.

With a 20-round drum magazine equipped, I wouldn’t have to worry about firepower.

"Wait, something’s coming."

At my words, everyone stopped and looked in the direction I was pointing.

Grrrr...

"What the hell..."

What appeared before us were Doberman-like zombie dogs.

Their bodies were torn in places, with blood and flesh hanging off, and some even had exposed ribs.

Yet they showed no signs of pain, their bloodshot eyes fixed on us as they growled lowly.

Seeing them, the members instinctively stepped back, unable to hide their shock.

Grrr!!!

While they were frozen for a moment, the zombie dogs charged at us in an instant.

I quickly raised the Origin shotgun, aimed for their heads, and pulled the trigger.

Bang, bang, bang!

"What are you doing?! Snap out of it!"

When I shouted while firing the shotgun, everyone finally raised their weapons and opened fire on the zombie dogs.

But the members didn’t yet know the virus’s characteristics, so they weren’t properly aiming for the heads, and it’s safe to say I dealt with most of the zombie dogs.

Bang, bang, bang!

"Damn, what the hell are these?! They won’t die even when we shoot them!"

"Aim for the head! That seems to kill them for sure!"

At that moment, I saw a helicopter quickly passing overhead.

It seemed Brad, who had been left alone, had also encountered zombie dogs.

"Brad!!! Where are you going!!!"

Chris shouted at the departing helicopter, but his words couldn’t reach Brad.

To make matters worse, perhaps attracted by the gunfire and helicopter noise, zombie dogs from the surrounding area began to gather one by one.

And as time passed, their numbers only grew.

Bang, bang, bang! Boom, boom!

Kraaagh!!!

"Damn it, there’s more coming!"

Just then, Wesker gestured and shouted.

"This way! I found a building, run for it!"

Following Wesker’s orders, we started running toward a building visible in the distance.

But it was dark, making it hard to see our footing, and the zombie dogs were chasing us, so Jill tripped over a branch and fell.

Thud!

"Ugh..."

Without hesitation, I grabbed Jill by the waist, hoisted her onto my shoulder, and resumed running toward the building.

"Jill, cover us."

"Ah, okay."

Jill was flustered at first but quickly regained her composure and started firing at the pursuing zombie dogs to suppress them.

Bang, bang, bang!

"Jin, hurry!"

Chris had reached the building first and was holding the door open, waiting for us.

As we were the last ones inside, he quickly shut the door, blocking the zombie dogs’ entry.

Thanks to my warning, even Joseph, who would have died in the original, was saved, and we all arrived safely at the mansion.

"Phew... we made it..."

I pretended to be relieved as I said that.

Jill patted my back.

"Okay, you can put me down now."

"Yeah."

When Jill said that, I set her down.

She thanked me.

"You’re really strong. Carrying all that gear and me, and running that fast... Anyway, thanks to you, I’m alive. Thank you."

"If you’re grateful, buy me a meal later."

"Deal. But I never imagined there’d be such a huge mansion this deep in the forest..."

Barry agreed.

"Yeah, it looks quite luxurious."

As Barry said, the mansion was decorated to look very luxurious, like an old Western-style residence.

"Is anybody here??!!!"

Suddenly, Joseph, who had survived, shouted loudly.

Chris quickly stopped him.

"Joseph, be quiet!"

"Why? There might be people living here. It’d be good to get help, right?"

"If anyone were here, they would have come out by now with all that racket. And this is strange. A mansion this size in the middle of the forest."

"Maybe some rich person built it as a vacation home."

Just then, I pointed out something else unusual.

"All those dogs chasing us were Dobermans. If they were wild dogs living in the forest, there should have been various breeds. And they looked strange. They were clearly badly injured, but they didn’t seem to feel any pain."

"Right. Even when shot, they didn’t even whimper."

Wesker then spoke.

"There are certainly more than one or two strange things here. And Bravo Team might be staying here too. So we should search the mansion, find them, and also look for a way to contact the outside."

Wesker then split us into teams of two.

"Chris and Joseph, search the right side of the mansion. Jin and Jill, take the left. Barry, stay with me."

"Understood, Captain. Oh, anyone low on ammo? I brought plenty, so I’ll share."

At that, everyone gathered around me, having apparently used up a lot of ammo fighting the zombie dogs.

I opened my bag and handed out some ammunition.

Chris asked suspiciously.

"Didn’t you say the stuff in your bag was equipment before we came here?"

"Ammo is equipment."

"Th, is that so?"

"Yes."

Chris seemed to find it odd, but when I insisted, he didn’t press further.

After reloading our magazines, Jill and I began searching the left side of the mansion as Wesker had instructed.

The first room we entered was quite spacious, and the long table in the center made it clear it was a dining room.

A typewriter, just like in the original game where you could save, was also there.

’Save... I doubt it...’

Even though I knew it wouldn’t work, I tried typing on it anyway.

"Jin, come here. There’s a bloodstain."

While doing that, Jill called me over, and I saw a bloodstain on the floor.

"Why would there be blood here?"

"Maybe it’s from a Bravo Team member attacked by those dogs?"

"I’m not sure. It’s too soon to tell from just this. We should investigate further inside the mansion."

"Yeah, let’s do that."

We went further inside.

Then we saw a person sitting in the hallway, eating something.

But he was pale as a corpse, his clothes torn in places and stained with blood.

"Excuse me..."

Jill tried to speak to him, thinking he was a living person, but when he turned around, she couldn’t help but be shocked.

His eyes were pale and bloodshot, and like the dogs we first saw, flesh was falling off his face.

He slowly rose from his seat, as if targeting us.

Knowing he was a zombie, I stepped forward, drew the Yukimura, aimed for his head, and pulled the trigger without hesitation.

Phut!

Thud! Thud!

"What the hell is this monster!?"

"I don’t know either. But one thing’s clear: this mansion is full of dangers, not just those dogs we met earlier. We need to be prepared."

Jill sighed and agreed.

"Hah... it seems so."

I handed the .44 caliber revolver I had in my chest holster to Jill.

"Just in case you need more firepower. If those monsters don’t go down easily, use this. Be careful, the recoil is strong."

"Okay, thanks."

We then checked the body and what the zombie had been eating.

"Ugh... damn, it’s Kenneth. Kenneth J. Sullivan of Bravo Team."

Kenneth’s face was half-eaten, making him hard to recognize, but his distinctive green uniform and S.T.A.R.S. patch confirmed his identity.

"It seems Bravo Team came here too. We should let the Captain know."

"Yeah."

We returned to the main hall where we first entered and started looking for Wesker and the others.

"Wesker!? Chris!? Barry! Joseph!"

But they must have moved elsewhere, as there was no answer no matter how many times we called.

"Jin, what do we do now?"

"Well, I’d love to keep dating you here, but we need to find the others first. There might be survivors who need help."

At that, Jill’s face turned bright red like a tomato, and she slapped the back of my head.

Smack!

"Ugh!"

"Don’t casually slip in nonsense like that at a time like this! Anyway, you’re right, we should find the others."

"Yeah."

Jill’s reaction suggested she wasn’t completely uninterested in me.

We started exploring the mansion again.

But there were many locked doors.

"What do we do? Should we find a key?"

I found that a bit absurd.

In the original game it was unavoidable, but I thought, "Why bother when I have a master key shotgun?"

"Let’s just break through."

"Are you sure? What if we get sued later..."

"With all these monsters around, who’s going to sue? Step back for a moment."

I immediately took out the Origin shotgun and aimed at the lock of the locked door.

Bang!

The gunshot rang out, and the lock shattered, the door sliding open.

I checked the open door, rested the shotgun on my shoulder, and grinned.

"Ta-da! Jin’s universal magic shotgun! Locked door? One shot, and it’s done! What do you think, milady? Pretty easy, right?"

Jill stared blankly at the broken doorknob and me alternately, then finally burst out laughing.

"Oh my god... you’re really impossible."

"I’ll take that as a compliment."

"It’s not! Enough joking, let’s keep searching."

"Yeah."

We continued searching the building.

We encountered zombies along the way, but Jill and I easily dealt with them as we pressed forward.

Jill no longer seemed as shocked as before.

She had apparently gotten quite used to fighting zombies.

However, there was one difference between the zombies in this world and those in Dawn of the Dead.

Their movements were sluggish and easy to dodge, but some of them didn’t go down easily even with a bullet to the head.

As a result, I often had to use two or three rounds when one should have sufficed.

’How annoying...’

In the end, I switched the Yukimura to burst fire mode and started firing two or three rounds at a time.

Meanwhile, Jill calmly aimed for the zombies’ heads with the Magnum revolver I had given her.

She must have also felt that the 9mm Parabellum rounds from the Samurai Edge were a bit lacking.

Then we found a terrace leading outside and discovered another body, presumably from Bravo Team.

"This is Bravo Team’s ’Forest Speyer.’ Are there no more Bravo Team survivors?"

"We’ve only seen two so far. Don’t jump to conclusions."

I tried to offer some hopeful words, but Jill’s heart still seemed heavy after seeing the Bravo Team bodies.

Before moving on, we took Forest’s grenade launcher and ammunition.

This was fortunate, as it followed Jill’s route; if it had been Chris’s route, we wouldn’t have gotten the grenade launcher.

It was a bit disappointing that it only had a few rounds.

After that, we also obtained a Winchester M1897 shotgun.

So Jill decided to alternate between the .44 Magnum revolver and the shotgun.

’Ammo can’t be scavenged like in the original, but at least the guns are available, so that’s a relief.’

While exploring the mansion and searching the second floor, we finally encountered survivors.

"Jin! I’m so glad to see you!"

It was Rebecca and Bravo Team’s radio operator, Richard.

But Richard was lying on the floor in bad shape, with Rebecca tending to him.

Something unexpected happened.

Rebecca ran to me as soon as she saw me and hugged me.

I was a bit taken aback, but I gently patted her shoulder to calm her down.

"Calm down, Rebecca. We came to rescue Bravo Team."

But Jill’s expression, watching the scene, was far from pleased.
