Chapter 1042: Chapter 1042: But It’s Not as Sweet as Candy
On the plane back to Rivia, Vanessa Sterling sat by the window, gazing out at the sea of clouds.
Her heart was filled with some nervousness and emotion.
She had thought about returning to Rivia, but never imagined it would be with Miles Sterling.
Miles took special care of her throughout the journey; he didn’t let her carry any luggage and even held her hand in crowded airports.
Miles thought Vanessa might not want to return to The Sterling, and their previous house held too many bad memories, so he chose to check into a hotel.
By the time they arrived at the airport, the sky had already darkened completely.
Rivia’s weather was colder too, Vanessa shivered from the cold as soon as she got off the plane, having not worn enough clothes.
The driver immediately took them to the hotel, and Miles booked two adjacent rooms.
"Take a hot shower to warm up and put on some more clothes. We’ll go out for dinner later." Miles placed the luggage in Vanessa’s room and then went to his own next door.
After a while, just as Vanessa had finished dressing, Miles knocked on the door.
"Cold medicine, as a precaution."
Vanessa smiled, reached out to take the pill from Miles’s hand, and swallowed it with water of just the right temperature.
Then she watched as Miles opened a candy wrapper and offered the creamy hard candy to her lips.
Vanessa smiled at him, opened her mouth to take it, and said with a smile, "Actually, the medicine wasn’t very bitter."
Miles raised his hand to rub her damp hair, "But it’s not as sweet as candy. Go dry your hair quickly, I’ll wait by the door."
"Okay." Vanessa didn’t close the door, just turned and ran back into the room.
Miles just stood by the door, keeping a distance that made Vanessa feel safe.
She noticed all his careful and considerate actions.
The warm feeling in her heart was akin to when he had once promised to take her home from the icy cold fields, giving her a hot meal and warm clothes.
The cold wind blew over the streets at night as Miles held Vanessa’s hand tightly, following the GPS direction to the restaurant.
"Why are your hands so cold? Holding them for so long and they’re still not warm."
As he said this, Miles placed her hand inside his coat pocket.
Vanessa turned her head to look at him with a smile, "I didn’t realize Rivia had gotten this cold. I should’ve brought a hand warmer."
"I reminded you that it would get colder these past few days."
"You talk, but you’re the one with a runny nose from the cold."
Miles sniffed and laughed, "I didn’t expect it to drop so much. It really is a bit cold."
Vanessa started to jog, pulling him along, "Hurry up, it’ll be warm inside the restaurant."
Miles looked at Vanessa playfully pulling him along, with an indulgent gaze, feeling like he was dreaming.
How could he have been so heartless before, to hurt such a wonderful and kind girl?
For those hurts, he felt like he couldn’t make it up to her, even in a lifetime.
When the two of them left the steaming hot pot restaurant, it was already close to ten o’clock.
"Let’s take a walk before going back?"
Miles nodded, "Sure, I’m feeling hot anyway."
"...I want to go see where we used to live."
Miles’s expression became slightly tense, and he looked down at Vanessa with a complex look.
But Vanessa seemed to no longer care about what had happened there, she looked up and asked, "Is the house still there? You didn’t sell it, did you?"
Miles chuckled, "How could I sell it? I’ve been living there all along."
Vanessa’s smile became slightly stiff, as if she had a lot to say but swallowed it back, only joking lightly, "Then why didn’t you take me back? Is there another girl living there?"
