Chapter 475: The Mythic Beast’s New Master

"Not bad at all." Marcus let out a satisfied breath as he looked over the Twin-Winged Ice Owl Bow’s attributes.

He had gone out to complete a trial and somehow come back with a Mythic Artifact. Even by his standards, that felt like a ridiculous stroke of luck.

The only problem was that the weapon required level 50. He wasn’t level 50 yet, which meant he couldn’t equip it, couldn’t test it, and couldn’t finally put his archery skills to proper use.

Marcus stared at the level requirement with growing irritation.

’Damn level restrictions.’

At that moment, a system notification rang out.

Ding!

[Congratulations, player Stonehaven. You have completed the quest: Hunt Down the Traitor Evan. Reward: 200 Reputation, 20,000 Gold.]

Marcus checked his quest log. The mission had disappeared. The quest was officially complete.

Afterward, he walked with the villagers to the entrance of Millbrook Village. Following another round of heartfelt farewells, and after promising several times that he would visit again, he activated a Town Portal Scroll.

A flash of light enveloped him. The next second, he reappeared inside his mansion at Dragon’s Peak Citadel.

"Marcus, you’re back!"

"Bro, how’d it go?"

"Marcus, did you finish the quest?"

Before he could even take a step forward, a flood of voices hit him from every direction. The girls had clearly been waiting for him, and the moment he appeared, they surrounded him.

Even Jade rushed over immediately and grabbed his arm. "Marcus, did my kitty hatch yet?" she asked eagerly. "Did you finish the trial?"

Then, without giving him a chance to answer, she continued. "Marcus, is that Twin-Winged Water Demon Cat at the top of the Pet Leaderboard really the one from my egg? Is it actually as cute as the preview showed? And how did it become a Mythic Beast? The description looked different from the original pet egg too."

Question after question came flying out. Jade practically glued herself to his side as she looked up at him expectantly.

Marcus couldn’t help smiling. "What do you think?" He reached over and lightly tapped her nose. "Of course it’s your cat."

Jade’s eyes immediately lit up. "I knew it!" She hugged his arm even tighter. "Marcus is the best! I knew that Mythic Beast had to be my kitty!"

Without the slightest concern for who was watching, she rose onto her toes and planted a quick kiss on his cheek. Then she pulled back, laughing happily.

Marcus could only shake his head. This girl really had no sense of restraint. When he looked around, every single person in the room was watching.

The Pet Leaderboard had caused a huge stir not long ago. A brand-new Mythic Beast, the Twin-Winged Water Demon Cat, had suddenly appeared at the very top and pushed the Level 9 Shadow-Stained Gryphon King down a rank.

Ordinary players had no idea where it had come from. His girls, however, knew exactly which pet egg was involved. They had obviously connected the dots and been waiting for him to return with answers.

As Marcus looked around, he noticed Icefall and Firebrand standing among the others. The twin sorceresses seemed to be spending more and more time around his group lately.

"Bro, quit dragging it out already," Amber said impatiently. "What does the cat actually look like? Is it pretty? Let us see it."

The others immediately nodded.

Marcus laughed. "Alright."

With a wave of his hand, he summoned the pet.

A small black cat appeared in the room. Blue markings ran across its forehead and along its back. Its fur was sleek, its posture elegant, and the pair of black wings growing from its shoulders made it look completely different from any ordinary feline.

The room immediately erupted.

"It’s so cute!"

"Look at those wings!"

"It’s even prettier than the preview!"

Jade’s eyes practically sparkled. "Marcus! It’s even cuter than I imagined! How did it get wings?"

Unable to resist, she reached out to pick it up.

"Meow."

The cat ignored her completely. Instead, it flew straight to Marcus and landed on his shoulder.

Jade froze. The room fell silent for a second, then several girls started laughing.

"Looks like it doesn’t recognize its owner."

"That’s embarrassing."

Jade puffed out her cheeks. "Kitty!"

Marcus chuckled and held out his hand. The cat immediately flew down and landed in his palm. He picked it up and gently held it toward Jade.

"This little one belongs to you now."

As he spoke, he initiated the pet transfer.

To his surprise, Jade immediately rejected it. Instead of accepting, she reached over to stroke the cat’s head and leaned against Marcus.

"Marcus, it’s a Mythic Beast," she said softly. "You should keep it. I’ll be happy just being allowed to pet it."

Marcus looked down at her. He understood exactly what she was thinking. She wasn’t being polite. She genuinely believed the strongest things should stay with him.

Wrapping an arm around her waist, he smiled. "Jade, this is a gift from me. How can you refuse a gift?"

"But Marcus, it’s a Mythic Beast..." She looked conflicted.

Marcus cut her off before she could continue. "But what?" His voice softened. "Jade is important to me. And besides, what’s yours is mine too. Unless you’re saying you don’t want to share with me?"

Jade’s eyes widened. "Of course I want to share!" She looked genuinely alarmed. "I love Marcus the most. I always listen to him. Everything I have is his."

The moment the words left her mouth, several girls around them rolled their eyes.

Marcus almost laughed. Seeing that she had fallen right into the trap, he pressed forward. "Then accept the pet."

Jade hesitated for a few more seconds before finally agreeing. The transfer completed successfully.

Then she immediately kissed his cheek again. "Marcus, I’ll take good care of the kitty for you." Her voice dropped slightly. "But tonight, you’re holding me while we sleep."

Marcus nearly choked. The room went completely quiet. Every girl present was staring at them, and Icefall and Firebrand looked especially uncomfortable.

Marcus slowly turned toward Jade. The little troublemaker looked perfectly innocent. ’Did she really have to announce that in front of everyone?’ He could already feel a headache coming.

Jade, meanwhile, looked delighted with herself.

Marcus narrowed his eyes. Fine. They could discuss that comment later.

Thankfully, Amber chose that exact moment to save him. She leaned forward to inspect the cat’s attributes. "Bro, how did it evolve? And was it connected to your level 50 trial?"

The question instantly drew everyone’s attention.

Marcus silently thanked his sister. "Yeah," he said. "Actually, the evolution ended up playing a huge role. If the egg hadn’t evolved and absorbed those souls, I honestly don’t know whether I could’ve completed the trial."

Everyone quickly gathered around.

Marcus sat down on one of the sofas. As always, Alana had already prepared tea for him. After taking a drink, he opened his battle recording and began showing them what had happened during the fight against the Soul Vase Ghost.

The girls watched with wide eyes. When they saw the abilities displayed by the evolved pet, several of them gasped.

"That’s ridiculous."

"That ability is broken."

"No wonder you cleared the trial."

The little cat received even more attention after that. Jade held it proudly while it let out soft meows from her arms.

Once Marcus finished recounting everything that had happened in Millbrook Village, he brought out the gifts he had received.

Aunt Martha’s dried beef.

Chloe’s pickled eggs.

The honey dates.

The red pears.

The thousand-year grain wine.

The girls were immediately fascinated.

Marcus secretly made a mental note. Later, he would contact Path to Heaven and ask him to help locate his cousin Jennifer, the chef at Magnolia Restaurant. With ingredients like these, she could probably prepare an incredible feast. He could invite the bros too. After everything that had happened recently, a proper celebration felt well deserved.

Eventually, Marcus stood up. "Alright, enough relaxing." He glanced at the time. "We’re going leveling."

The group quickly headed for the temple.

After arriving, Marcus went to report to Elder Lonely.

A quick glance at the clock showed there were still more than forty minutes left before the trial deadline. Far more time than he needed. Marcus couldn’t help feeling pleased with himself. A Special Hard Trial that had everyone worried had ended up being much easier than expected. At least for him.

Inside the Great Bell Hall, Elder Lonely noticed his arrival and smiled kindly. "Stonehaven, have you made your decision?" The old man folded his hands behind his back. "Will you be paying the fee to change the trial quest, or will you wait and attempt it again later?"

Marcus stared at him. For a moment, he wondered if he had heard correctly. ’What is this old man talking about?’

Straightening his back, Marcus spoke with complete confidence. "Elder Lonely, I have to say, your faith in me is disappointing."

The elder blinked.

Marcus pointed at himself. "You think a Soul Vase Ghost was enough to stop me?" A grin appeared on his face. "I’m here to turn in my level 50 trial."

The smile vanished from Elder Lonely’s face.

Marcus continued calmly. "And then I’m going to level up."

The words landed like a thunderclap. Elder Lonely froze. His eyes widened. "You’re turning in the trial?"

"Yes."

"And advancing to level 50?"

"Also yes."

Marcus nodded as though nothing about this was unusual.

Elder Lonely stared at him for several long seconds. Then he abruptly turned around and looked toward the giant bell behind him.

The inscription carved into its surface had already changed.

[Stonehaven has slain the Soul Vase Ghost and completed the Level 50 Trial. Advancement approved.]

And in the upper corner of the display, the countdown was still running. Thirty-eight minutes remained.

Elder Lonely looked at the message. Then at Marcus. Then back at the message again.

For the first time since Marcus had met him, the old man appeared completely speechless.
