Chapter 474: The Twin-Winged Ice Owl Bow
After Marcus finished accepting the gifts, the Village Chief stepped up beside him and said with a warm smile, "Sir, these gifts may not be worth much, but they come from the heart. I hope you won’t think too little of them."
Not worth much? Marcus nearly laughed out loud. The Chief’s modesty was on another level. Either he genuinely had no idea how valuable these things were, or Millbrook Village was hiding even greater treasures somewhere.
At this point, Marcus wouldn’t have been surprised if there was a divine artifact buried beneath a barn.
Still, he had no reason to pry.
Seeing the hopeful look on the Chief’s face, Marcus quickly replied, "Chief, I love the gifts. Especially Aunt Martha’s dried beef and Chloe’s pickled eggs. They look amazing, honestly. I’m more worried about finishing them too quickly than anything else. And the thousand-year grain wine, the honey dates, and the red pears... I’ve never seen products like these before. They’re incredible."
The compliments flowed naturally. After all, they cost him nothing, and judging by the villagers’ expressions, they were appreciated. Besides, if these people genuinely considered such treasures ordinary gifts, there was no harm in making a strong impression.
Sure enough, his words hit the mark. The Chief looked delighted. Aunt Martha’s face lit up with pride, and the surrounding villagers all wore satisfied smiles. Chloe’s reaction was the most obvious. The young girl immediately turned red when Marcus mentioned her pickled eggs. She lowered her head, then stole a few quick glances at him, looking both embarrassed and pleased.
Aunt Martha laughed loudly. "Young man, if you like them that much, I’ll make extra every year. Ten more pounds, all reserved for you."
The Chief nodded. "Sir, while these items aren’t particularly valuable in terms of gold, they do take a great deal of time and effort to produce. Especially the honey dates and red pears. Their yields are limited, and we don’t keep much in storage." Then he added sincerely, "But Millbrook Village will never forget what you’ve done for us. Since you enjoy them, we’ll make sure to reserve a portion of our specialty goods for you every year."
Chloe spoke up softly. "The Phoenix-Tail Hens laid plenty of eggs this year. By next spring, I should be able to pickle more than a hundred."
Marcus already knew these gifts couldn’t be easy to obtain, but he hadn’t expected the villagers to hand over practically their entire stock. Their gratitude wasn’t just words. They were giving him things they genuinely treasured. For a moment, he felt a little guilty about how excited he’d been over the rewards.
Then he silently made a promise to himself. No matter what happened, he would not allow that Black Peak Ten-Thousand-Dagger something ghost to destroy this village.
Looking at the Chief, he said seriously, "Chief, if Millbrook Village ever needs anything, come find me. I’m not just saying that."
The Chief’s eyes grew moist. "Sir..." he said quietly. "To think that someone like you would still care about a place like Millbrook..."
His gaze drifted to the Golden Wolf badge on Marcus’s chest. His expression became complicated, as though he wanted to say more, but in the end he swallowed the words.
Marcus immediately caught the odd tone. "A place like Millbrook?" he asked. "Chief, what do you mean by that?"
The Chief sighed softly. "Nothing worth discussing." Then, as if unwilling to continue the subject, he changed directions entirely. "Sir, if that Black Peak Ten-Thousand-Dagger-Through-The-Heart Ghost attacks again, we’ll have to rely on your help."
Marcus could tell the old man wasn’t willing to explain further, so he didn’t push. "You can count on me," he said with a firm nod.
The two continued walking toward the village entrance while chatting casually. Marcus was already preparing to return and report everything that had happened.
Just as they reached the gate, the Chief suddenly stopped. "Oh! Sir, I nearly forgot."
Marcus turned back. "Forgot what?"
The Chief looked at him. "Earlier, your pet devoured the soul of the Twin-Winged Ice Owl, correct?"
Marcus nodded. "That’s right. Why?"
The Chief immediately called out to a nearby young villager. "Tyler! Go to my house and bring me the bow we found yesterday."
"Right away!"
Tyler spun around and sprinted off toward the Chief’s residence.
Marcus blinked. "A bow?"
The Chief nodded. "Last night, a collapse occurred in the back mountains. The cave-in exposed a hidden cavern. Along with the Twin-Winged Ice Owl’s soul, we discovered a Mythic Artifact inside." He paused before continuing. "It’s called the Twin-Winged Ice Owl Bow."
Marcus’s eyes brightened immediately. The name alone sounded powerful.
The Chief explained, "The bow was forged from the Twin-Winged Ice Owl’s bones and essence blood. None of us can properly use a weapon of that level. Since you’ve already defeated the traitor Evan and obtained the owl’s soul, we agreed that it should belong to you. There was so much happening earlier that I nearly forgot to mention it."
Marcus almost didn’t know what to say. A Mythic Artifact. And a bow, of all things.
Lately he’d been thinking more and more about finding a suitable ranged weapon. He had Mythic-grade Explosive Arrows sitting unused in his inventory, and Liam Windrunner’s Mountain Fang Shot had been gathering dust because he lacked a proper bow. Now one had practically fallen into his lap.
"Thank you, Chief," Marcus said sincerely. His heart was already racing with anticipation.
A few minutes later, Tyler returned carrying a longbow wrapped in pale blue mist. The bow’s shape resembled a pair of wings spread wide in flight, frozen into solid form.
The Chief accepted it from Tyler and handed it over. "Sir, this is the Twin-Winged Ice Owl Bow."
Marcus immediately took it. The moment his hands touched the weapon, a surge of water-element energy flowed through him. An intense chill followed, causing him to tense instinctively. Frost mist drifted across the bow’s surface, and crackling traces of ice-element power lingered around it.
The weapon felt extraordinary. It wasn’t merely powerful, it was beautiful in a way that demanded attention.
Nearly two meters long, the bow felt substantial without being cumbersome. The ice-blue frame curved like a pair of wings, and every detail reflected exceptional craftsmanship.
Marcus quickly opened its information panel.
