Chapter 85: Bring the Ents In (2)
There was a phenomena that afflicted all conscious beings. Conscious, intelligent, smart. Arguments were open for that, but in my eyes it worked on anything.
Even animals and rats.
That thing was laziness.
Now that there was rain and food on demand, whenever they would want, the Ents had no choice but to look at the matter on hand differently.
No choice? Well, I had planted the seeds of that back then as well.
With Enteki 1 going around, merging with the rest of the Ents over these last three days.
And then a taste of the gourmet food that was fertilizer, made naturally to boost the trees. It took care of many things, including all the waste people here were going to inevitably produce.
A self-sustaining architecture.
Just like humans found sugar sweet because it was filled with glucose, the fertilizer that was filled with nutrients that these trees liked was like crack to their tongues. I had verified this first on Enteki.
"S-so what!" Enteki 2, the proud soldier of the Ent race, exclaimed. "We are not going to fall for these slimy little tricks of yours! W-we will take back our forest!"
"Oh? But then you’ll never get to eat the food in this bag again. On the other had... if you just decide to live in the city sharing the forest..."
Enteki 2 didn’t flinch, but all the others behind him did.
"No more fertilizer...?"
"That thing... it’s nectar of heavens. And it has enriched us so much."
"If we can just eat that everyday, what is the need to struggle as ents?"
"That’s right!" I took that thread and went on with it. Grandly, with my hands stretched wide and my eyes looking around at them.
"You don’t need to do much. Work only 8 hours a day. In that work you would not even have to go around and fight monsters or struggle with other Ents to find a space to stay."
I spoke with conviction enough to make a magic spell turn around instead of hitting its target!
"You can have homes. Grow with your children. Listen to music every day from the many artists this city has. Food, water, shelter... security. For life."
The trees shuddered.
"D-d-don’t fall for his traps! Why would you take our forest if that was the case?"
"Isn’t it obvious," I said. Was saying we ran away the right thing? Of course. "It’s to expand. Why would we not want more and more of the world to be this way?"
"KUH!?"
"T-that’s true."
"Enteki, if what he’s saying really can happen, every day would be so much calmer."
"Yes, Enteki. We’ll have nothing to worry about, no problems to face."
"Life would be convenient."
"It’s a dream!" Enteki 2 shouted, and his loyal followers among the soldier ents echoed the sentiment. They couldn’t believe how everyone just wanted an easy life and not their life. "Do you want to be enslaved by these humans?"
"My my, Enteki 2," I said. "Aren’t those big words?"
"2?"
"Who said this enslaving anyone? You work, we pay you. You do whatever you want with that payment. You can just as well choose not to eat, and if you don’t work, you will just have nothing to eat. Is that enslavement?"
"W-what else is it? The forest is for everyone!"
Oh my.
"Have you trees never wondered why someone else should take the fruits of your labor? If you have worked hard to kill a monster, shouldn’t you be rewarded for it? Why do others take it for granted."
"T-that’s right..."
"Every time I find food a lot of other Ents talk to the trees and come over."
"Hey, what can we do if there’s not enough food?"
"That’s not the case anymore, right? And in the first place, I found my food while being just as hungry as you."
That’s right. Feel it. The vile charge of capitalism.
All of it arose from the simple idea of ’me’ before ’us.’
For these community-living trees, this would be the first dose of capitalistic self-obsessed ideologies. But Capitalism was also the most wonderful of all methods, was it not?
When it came to making people selfish and exploiting them, nothing came even close.
Sell them a dream.
"What do you think? Anyone who agrees with all of this, please come to the left. It’s okay, we are still willing to hear all of you out."
"You won’t break us, vile humans!"
"Of course, it’s a choice. You all can come live with us, and to mark the beginning of that choice, why not everyone who joins take this bag of fertilizer? It’s a gift. For coming to the city."
"No one go!" said Enteki 2 as he himself moved to the right.
Enteki 2 was confident. But unfortunately the world did not operate on just that, did it?
Under the raining skies, the weathers that made these trees happiest. Enteki 2 felt the sorrow of being around rain for the first time.
Most of the Ents went to the left, leaving only Enteki 2 and some of his loyal soldiers off on the right.
"N-no no way!" He yelled. "You won’t do that. You all, all of you!?"
"Hahahahah!" I laughed.
"It’s okay, Enteki 2. I totally understand. I won’t force you and your friends to live in this city..."
Now. The time for the hook, line and sinker.
The final jab to crush this bastard’s ego, it was finally that moment.
"But... this forest belongs to the Ents does it not? That’s why..."
I laughed and laughed. Menacingly watching over him.
"As the majority of Ents want to be here... can you leave from the city? Oh, and from that land you people had occupied before. We will expand there."
"Wha...!"
The ents looked over at their soldier friend with a saddened gaze. They really couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. At the same time, they also couldn’t empathize.
Enteki 2 fell to his knees.
"This... can’t be..."
The ents were officially recruited.
