Chapter 84: Bring the Ents In (1)
A human came near the Ents’ land.
The Ents were staying in their lane, as usual, waiting for the days to pass and to begin their counter-attack.
One little child ran over to the forest, leaving the riverbank behind.
"Enteki Enteki?"
It murmured. The little birch tree passed the other normal trees around and on the ground, saw a bag. It was a little smaller than Enteki, and bigger than his younger sibling Enteki.
Enteki, the little child, poked the bag. He inspected, poke poke, tap tap.
His roots were liking it. It was a great smell. The smell of delicious things like corpses and poop.
The root stabbed into the jute bag, and slowly, he started to eat.
It was absorbed, all the material inside.
"Oh!! OHHH!"
Enteki screamed in joy, elated. From behind his mother, Enteki, came running over.
"Enteki!" She wrapped her branches around her child and pulled him away, "what are you... oh my, what is this smell?"
The mother looked at the bag, the child whined a little about having been pulled away.
"Hm?"
She tried to touch it with her roots, and ate a little bit.
"R-rich! It’s really rich!"
Joy filled her. From within. It had been so long since she had received such nutrient rich food.
Even though the ground near the river was fresh and the soil was great, the sheer numbers of the trees had made it impossible to eat properly and get the nutrients and space they all needed.
But this...
What was this?
Enteki pulled her child and started to go back, she thought it would be best to tell people about this situation.
***
Meetings happened. The trees pointed fingers at each other, some had their jaws open, and finally they returned to the forest.
A small group. Meant to look into things.
This time, there were five bags in total.
They tasted it one by one.
Delicious! Mind Numbing! The food was really good.
They took the bags and went back to the other people.
"Enteki Enteki Enteki!"
"Enteki!?"
"Enteki Enteki!"
With those conversations, for which there was no need for a translation, the trees all lit up. Everyone tasted a little bit of the concoction in the jute bags and turned their skins bright and leaves greener.
Finally, out came the guards of the trees. Enteki 2, as someone very amazing and cool had christened he tree, saw the situation and furrowed his brows.
"W-what is going on here?" He asked, his voice booming. "What? You found something in the forests? And this?"
The man’s eyes widened.
"I don’t believe it."
The soldier Ents finally tasted more of the food from the Jute bags. Only when they absorbed the nutrient rich corpses and feces in the bag did he too feel stronger.
The effect was almost immediate.
What in the world...
For that day, with the total of 6 bags that they had received of food, the Ents feasted. They gave food to their kids, and to the elders.
The next day came by.
A total of 10 bags.
The trees didn’t need to settle and sit anywhere. They could just absorb food from the bags, and go to the rivers for water, and just like that they were getting stronger again.
Where this food was coming from? That question lingered in the back of every tree, but the slow process of eating from the soil near the river had starved them all.
And finally, they were no longer living in ’scarcity’ again.
The third day came by, and the trees thought about taking their area back. Now stronger, they would be able to take it all, right?
So they rushed to the place where there had been bags of food all this time, but it wasn’t there.
Enteki 2 did not say anything.
"That doesn’t matter... We’ll figure out the source of the food once the entire forest is ours!"
This is where one had to remember, these monsters were living in the backyard of the Grim Palace, and the Grim Palace was behind the Forbidden Fairy Forest.
In other words.
It was the most isolated place in the world for the last 300 years. Very few trees lived that long, and the trees that lived that long did not want to associate with these young’uns living in this part of the forest.
The trees went ahead. They reached the bottom of the cliff where they would leave their protest placards at as a sign of asking the Humans to leave.
And that’s when they saw it.
A small gnome, a gnome that held a hoe in its hands, resting on his shoulder. And behind him, multiple bags of the food that they had been eating.
The gnome looked up.
"..."
"Enteki...?"
"H-he isn’t saying anything."
The gnome had no mouth. So someone else spoke from behind. That someone else, of course, was I! The greatest thief in the world.
Looking at the trees from above the cliff, I stretched my hands and smiled widely.
"Mwahaah! How was it, the taste of the fertilizer? Was it good? Did you all like it?"
"Enteki! So it was your trick!?"
"Bastard! Human scum."
"Hey, hey, hey, now. What do you even mean human scum? By all means, please. You guys have eaten so much good food, why don’t you pay for it?"
"P-pay...?"
"Yeah. You just need to come stay here. Live like normal people, and you’ll get to eat all the fertilizer you could want."
"H-hah! Cheap tricks."
"You will cut down the forest, Enteki! And there will be no more water for us, Enteki!"
I snapped my fingers.
At that moment, a glass bottle broke apart on the ground. A strange blue liquid almost immediately evaporated and touched the clouds. Minutes? Barely a few of them.
Clouds started to gather, the sky turned gray.
The clouds that were small started calling for more and more moisture through the air and coalesced, turning into large nimbuses.
And then, it started to rain.
"What was that?"
